When scientists make erroneous pronouncements outside their area of expertise that's misinformation. When they make predictions that prove wrong that can be hugely consequential. How do we stop ourselves from doing this and how do we recognise epistemic trespass in others? What actually constitutes 'expertise', particularly in novel, interdisciplinary contexts ?

@UlrikeHahn @philosophy Epistemic trespass leads to problems for sure but can it also have benefits? Too much siloization has led whole fields astray. I mean, economics is half way to astrology at this point. Aren't well-informed non-economists morally required to trespass, or else seed the conversation to overqualified bullshitters?

The "top" postdocs in Canadian are awarded 40,000 CAD/year by the government. It costs 45% of that salary to rent a 1-bedroom in Toronto.

The government announced yesterday that it's not increasing our funding.

"For over two decades, these critical contributors to research and innovation have received no funding increase from the federal government and now face significant financial challenges." -

@academicchatter @erinnacland @academicsunite So the scientists trying to save the world make 1/4 as much as the capitalists who are destroying it? What could go wrong?

@academicchatter Google Scholar needs a "report" feature for flagging research that looks fake, LLM-generated, plagiarized, retracted, etc.
