Jitsi, the open-source video conferencing platform, now requires a Google, Microsoft, or Facebook account for their online service (jitsi.org)

While Jitsi is open-source, most people use the platform they provide, meet.jit.si, for immediate conference calls. They have now introduced a “Know Your Customer” policy and require at least one of the attendees to log in with a Facebook, Github (Microsoft), or Google account....

It’s hypocritical to call your service “privacy friendly” and then require the use of a Google/Facebook/GitHub account to log in. I kinda understand the reason why they do this, but they could have at least allowed you to use a more private email provider.

We greeks are once again on world news for our incompetence at doing…anything.

Every year around late july and august we see the same shit. Either a disaster or a big scandal from Greece makes international headlines.

Κλάσε μου τα αρχίδια” which literally stands for “fart my balls” in Greek.

It’s a way of telling someone to go fuck himself.

And the cloud is no longer cheap::Some tech is getting pricier and looking a lot like the older services it was supposed to beat. From video streaming to ride-hailing and cloud computing.

When I say Windows Photo Viewer I mean the old Windows 7 one. The one in Windows 10/11 is Microsoft Photos

Lemmy has zero monetary gain from you being addicted to the platform unlike Reddit.

Lemmy’s smaller community means that there’s not an endless stream of content to keep you hooked.

Even with millions of active users though I don’t see Lemmy being nowhere near as addicive as Reddit

Out of all the distros that I’ve tried, probably Manjaro. The distro itself is ok, I don’t like how kind of bloated the default installation is, but it’s not too bad.

However what really pisses me off, among their numerous other controversies, was when they replaced perfectly functional open source apps with proprietary onestwice. Though the former has since been reversed.

What made you choose your instance?

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

I was initially on lemmy.world, but the frequent DDOS attacks and the fact that Hexbear and Beehaw had defederated from it really put me off. Also, communities like !linux and !privacy were much bigger on lemmy.ml compared to lemmy.world.

Soo I jumped ship to lemmy.ml

I thought that Hexbear wasn’t going to federate with lemmy.world to begin with, but apparently it was according to this archived version of the post announcing the federation. Yeah my bad :)

USB-C confirmed for the iPhone 15 in new leaked images - Macworld (www.macworld.com)

We’ve known that the iPhone is switching to USB-C for a while now, but there was always a possibility that Apple would stick with Lightning for one more year. Based on the latest leaked images, however, Apple is all-in on USB-C for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, with USB-C parts for the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and...

Digg was essentially a site for sharing and discussing various links across the internet. It used to be extremely popular before the rise of Reddit, but it declined heavily after a controversial redisign (the infamous Digg v4) with most of it’s users fleeing to Reddit.

What are your thoughts on restricting children’s access to pornography online?

There are a lot of GOP-controller legislatures in the USA pushing through so-called “child protection” laws, but there’s a toll in the form of impacting people’s rights and data privacy. Most of these bills involve requiring adults to upload a copy of their photo ID.

owiseedoubleyou ,
@owiseedoubleyou@lemmy.ml avatar

None of these politcians who push for all those “protect the children” laws actually gives a shit about child safety. The only thing that such laws mange to do is restrict freedom of speech and expression for everyone including children.

If you are a careless parent, then no law is going prevent your kids from watching porn.
