I like the data they had to release under new EU regulations so far. For example, they have a single employee that speaks my native language, which is sixth most-spoken among languages of the European Union. It definitely shows when trying to report things like “kill yourself” posts, which apparently is OK with both Twitter terms of service and local law (that one came as surprise to me and would probably surprise lawyers as well).

They can’t ignore reports and have to allow at least one follow-up dispute per EU regulations. Unfortunately there’s no dedicated government office here for escalating it further (unlike Germany for example) but I imagine giving Digital Services Act more teeth will come with time.

TikTok is banned in India so there’s way less anti-muslim sentiment on the platform.

How is this racist? Behavior of BJP mob on Reddit was observable by how r/worldnews looked like depending on time of the day.

Apple is banking on some big companies ordering computers based on “Pro” moniker and that’s the reason why 13" Macbook Pro existed at all. Now that it is gone, 14" base M3 is taking its place. It’s likely to be running basic Excel and PowerPoint so that’s okay for the end user but still mighty shitty of Apple to price gouge on RAM.

AMD is developing ARM CPUs too according to the same article but less details are available.

Oh, that would be nice. Just imagine the power of something like Apple M1 combined with ATI Radeon X1950 with that sweet Shader Model 3.0 support ;)

Please don’t jump to conclusions yet. This has been observed in European common frogs so if your advances towards, say, Tasmanian toad, have been refused and the toad appears to be dead, it might be, in fact, dead.

How Google Alters Search Queries to Get at Your Wallet (www.wired.com)

Google likely alters queries billions of times a day in trillions of different variations. Here’s how it works. Say you search for “children’s clothing.” Google converts it, without your knowledge, to a search for “NIKOLAI-brand kidswear,” making a behind-the-scenes substitution of your actual query with a different...

I’ve recently found Qwant which I can recommend trying out. It’s a European search engine with it’s own index, independent from Google or Bing, privacy focused and free. The search results are pretty good, not sure if that’s because it’s just not affected by SEO focusing on Google.

The biggest issue I have with all of the alternatives is that Google Maps is just so much better than anything and integrating Maps results is extremely useful. Qwant integrates with OpenStreetMap but obviously that’s just not the same.

As much as I dislike Axel Springer, they seem to own just 20% of Qwant.

In my experience DDG kinda sucks, when I gave it a honest try (~1 month of having it as default) I kept going back to Google too much.

I don’t have any trouble dumping services when they go bad. I’m on Lemmy after all.
