Blocking shitty instances is great. Users should have more ability to include the instances they want to hang out with, in their own experience, but I’ll almost never object to a “fuck Nazis” policy.

Blocking other instances that don’t block shitty-enough instances makes sense. Hexbear is a chan board for tankies, but then .ml is only “more serious” by having mods snip and tut at anyone besides those tankies. If there’s any actual Nazi instances, I don’t wanna know, and I don’t wanna see anybody that hangs out with them.

Blocking instances based on M’Zuck’s embrace-extend-extinguish plans, yeah okay sure? That’s predicting existential problems for federation as a concept.

But a list of instances… not even mentioning them… by association? That feels kinda skeezy.

I guess if it’s specifically a “where you should sign up” list, versus a “here’s all the servers that aren’t fucking Nazis,” then… okay. But if this is a solution, maybe we have deeper problems.

Yeah there’s a ton of wacky Kojima nonsense that’s actually rooted in-- put that mushroom down.

mindbleach ,

Not the usual way fee-based gaming and gambling sites ruin games for everyone, but it is definitely on-brand.

mindbleach ,

A tangent about Haruhi and 4chan wouldn’t even be the weirdest leap, if this somehow helped prove P=NP.

mindbleach ,

Or, anywhere: “But why do you want that?”

mindbleach ,

“Here is the answer, but why do you want that?” is a tolerable invocation of the X-Y problem.

“But why do you want that?” is derailing. It’s an effortless, all-purpose, I’m-so-clever bot post, and it drags a straightforward technical hurdle into some MacGuyver-ass lateral thinking puzzle.

I was once trying to incorporate 2D characters into Blender, with normals. There was no higher goal. That was, itself, the point. But instead I got a bunch of useless advice about how to model my simple example object, and snippy bullshit about doing things properly in 3D. Nobody had a damn thing to say about the discrepancy between the scanline renderer and the path-tracing renderer.

Ah, entering his crazed delirium stage of dictatorship.

mindbleach ,

Dictatorship is when government doesn’t do things.

mindbleach ,

Oh right, this is .ml, where we’re playing make-believe that the lifetime figurehead who won an election against nobody is toootally a legitimate example of popular democracy. Because it would be impossible to criticize The West™ unless the immediate alternative was completely flawless.

Inventing a domestic video-game company obviously isn’t totalitarian, but it’s some Kim Jong Un shit. It’s an autocrat copying a theme park, with blackjack, and hookers. (Oh god. Tell me I’m not gonna see people pretend the Kims are anything but a hereditary monarchy.)

mindbleach ,

That logo of a cinder block on the moon is incredible.

mindbleach ,

People don’t drink because vodka tastes good, assholes. “You’re still playing!” is not proof of enjoyment.

mindbleach ,

Right: nothing inside a video game should cost real money.

If we allow that to continue, there will be nothing else.

mindbleach ,

It started in “free” mobile trash and is now in $70 single-player games. This shit costs almost nothing to add. The backlash doesn’t outweigh the extra money squeezed out. This is the dominant strategy. It is half the industry’s revenue. What else needs to happen, to tell you everything else is in trouble?

mindbleach ,

Especially with the counter arguments.

‘Just don’t buy it!’ I’m not, and yet: it keeps getting worse. It’s half the industry by revenue. And growing.

‘You just don’t like it!’ It monetizes human misery… inside entertainment. It makes gaming objectively worse.

‘Don’t legislate content!’ This is about the bus-i-ness mod-el. Sell whatever sex and violence you want. Just sell it.

‘There’s no exploitation here!’ Games make you value arbitrary worthless goals. That’s what makes them games.

One genius argued ‘other studios make several games over the decade these wallet-siphons have been dragged out, so they’d have to cost hundreds of dollars on release!’ Or. And this is just wild speculation about the cutting edge of computer science. Or they could make several games? Over time? And sell them for normal prices, less than a decade apart?

These people act like the just-sell-games model is unproven and hypothetical, in the same breath they insist it’s unaffected by this alternative of tricking people into tolerating endless fees. They’re not arguing. They’re just shuffling cards.

This camera captures 156.3 trillion frames per second (www.engadget.com)

Scientists have created a blazing-fast scientific camera that shoots images at an encoding rate of 156.3 terahertz (THz) to individual pixels — equivalent to 156.3 trillion frames per second. Dubbed SCARF (swept-coded aperture real-time femtophotography), the research-grade camera could lead to breakthroughs in fields studying...

As a programmer, I cannot throw that stone. Software is hard.

But leaving software alone is the easiest thing in the world.

mindbleach ,

It could be true ten times over and still justify none of what’s happening.

C is dangerous like your uncle who drinks and smokes. Y’wanna make a weedwhacker-powered skateboard? Bitchin’! Nail that fucker on there good, she’ll be right. Get a bunch of C folks together and they’ll avoid all the stupid easy ways to kill somebody, in service to building something properly dangerous. They’ll raise the stakes from “accident” to “disaster.” Whether or not it works, it’s gonna blow people away.

C++ is dangerous like a quiet librarian who knows exactly which forbidden tomes you’re looking for. He and his… associates… will gladly share all the dark magic you know how to ask about. They’ll assure you, oh no no no, the power cosmic would never pull someone inside-out, without sufficient warning. They don’t question why a loving god would allow the powers you crave. They will show you which runes to carve, and then, they will hand you the knife.

I tried thinking of one for Rust, and ‘the mom friend with a safeword’ is alarmingly accurate.

The secret basement is never locked. It’s fine to go down there, alone. You’ll only be scarred on the inside.

It’s when you go down together that all bets are off.

Would they do like Doug and make Carl blue?

And that word is nik… uh… necktie?

I feel like bad movies nowadays are bad for simpler reasons. Trying to pin down why some movies from the 1980s worked or didn’t, for that audience or a modern audience, was complicated and remains complicated. Nailing down the failure points of modern crap is so straightforward that it naturally becomes comedy.

Maybe it’s a matter of proportion. There’s complex duds now, and there were blatantly atrocious movies then. But it’s like… people making movies grew up watching too many movies, and don’t recognize which parts are a choice. They know a thing is supposed to happen, but don’t recognize that it was clearly set up to appear obviously necessary, so they don’t do that setup. And then the “have I got a movie for you” guy gets to say “unclear.” The same cyclical regurgitation creates live-action adaptations of animated films, which neither build on nor live up to the originals, despite examples where stage musicals outclassed the celebrated hand-drawn films.

The good news is that AI is going to destroy all of this by eliminating Hollywood. I mean really - if any writer who can sketch their own animatics can extract a finished scene from their computer, what is a billion-dollar studio going to offer them besides marketing?

mindbleach ,

Yeah, why would people in a censorship-happy autocracy think the government does everything right, if it wasn’t the absolute truth?

mindbleach ,

Undersides always built like a knife drawer, all crisscrossing plastic that’d destroy your palms.

Monitors were easier to lift, but the swivel stand was a negotiation every time you set it back down.

Not exactly mysterious, is it? There’s aid trucks. They can’t get in. And when they do, Israel shoots people getting aid.

I make very short games for no money, and even I know you do the last part early and the first part late.

Evidently. 141 test flights, caught fire while taking off, no reported casualties. There’s a second one in a museum that is pristine because the project was cancelled right as they completed it. IIRC the pilots did not appreciate the noise level inside the cockpit. Can’t imagine why. Doesn’t help that the canopy is not hinged: it goes over the nose.

mindbleach ,

People keep saying this and I think it’s bullshit.

If anything, the fascists were so stupid from the get-go that sane people thought they were joking.

“I did not have sexual relations with that woman. But I did buy viagra or whatever this ad was always about.”

Oh I know, I was just suggesting more-direct support was possible. Genuine stupid coverage for a long-dead plugin.

Maybe someone could coerce Dolphin browser from Android to iOS.

I do have to say, Ruffle is the most boringly-named of the “let’s do Flash in JS” projects. The first big one was named Gordon, in an obvious pun. The follow-up was named Shumway, in a less-obvious pun. About ALF.

That is dedication I absolutely would not match. I bought Android for software freedom and mmmight have watched some pivotal Homestuck animations on a Droid 2 Global.

Even now, please don’t give Apple money.

mindbleach ,

That is an experience I do not want on my phone and computer.

Instead, a total absence of control. If something borks up you’re just hosed. Possibly no way to do a thing in the first place, to later get borked.

As I’ve told many defenders of Apple’s downright criminal restrictions - Android works the same way, if you don’t fuck with it. My first phone? Absolutely I ran custom ROMs and installed whatever from wherever. My current phone is stock. Most people’s are.

The ability to fuck with things is crucial. Actually fucking with things is optional.
