Australian Jewish Association is a fucked up group of fucked up people. Opposing things they say is anti-idiocy.

KDE Plasma 6.0, and KDE Gear 24.02 released (kde.org)

Today the KDE Community is announcing a new najor release of Plasma 6.0, and Gear 24.02. KDE Plasma is a modern, feature-rich desktop environment for Linux-based operating systems. Known for its sleek design, customizable interface, and extensive set of applications, it is also open source, devoid of ads, and makes protecting...

mellowheat ,

Wow. They just lifted the horrific Desktop management paradigm from MacOS.

But I don’t know, I guess people like it, and fortunately I’m not forced to use KDE.

mellowheat ,

Nobody but tankies understand that.

In Tolkien stories, all the good guys are liberals. Saruman and his uruk-hai are perhaps the most leftist things there are in those stories. Elves are moderate conservatives with some questionable histories.

“The Shire at this time had hardly any ‘government.’ Families for the most part managed their own affairs. … The Thain was the master of the Shire-moot, and captain of the Shire-muster and the Hobbitry-in-arms, but as a muster and moot were only held in times of emergency, which no longer occurred, the Thainship had ceased to be more than a nominal dignity.”

Sounds like night-watch libertarianism that had declined to something even more minimal. Which ironically was easily run over by a smooth-talking old man with a broken staff and a pretty small bunch of ruffians. You had one job.

mellowheat ,

Because I don’t like leftists, probably :)

No but seriously, I was thinking of the tankie type there, not all leftists. And wrote lazily. Sorry.

mellowheat ,

Tankies aren’t leftists

Well yeah, and nazis are technically authoritarian centrists, not the far right. These labels are bad and they should feel bad.

Sauron

Different fella. No idea what his politics are, but probably not very liberal.

mellowheat ,

I think at that point all he had was smooth talking.

Like if we could imagine a president who tried to regain his power by usurping, failed and lost all his power, and then somehow is allowed to try again. Aren’t we glad LOTR is just fantasy, that’d be horrible.

mellowheat ,

and the most batshit crazy dumb as a rock thing I’ve read in 2024 so far!

Aww, don’t sell yourself short.

mellowheat ,

Somehow Ethereum 2 exists with Proof of Stake and everybody is still using Bitcoin. That tells me that nobody important (for this context) cares about wasted electricity.

mellowheat ,

How many of these apply to ungoogled-chromium?

mellowheat ,

I guess this part of the reactions to this video illustrates the confusion that people have about how it feels to be in that situation. I’m confused that people are unable to imagine it how chaotic the situation might be. We have the benefit of knowing how it unfolded, but what the police officers knew is what they were briefed on that morning (most probably threats against the embassy) and the exact situation they are in.

mellowheat ,

Seems like a case of reverting to training in a stressful situation.

mellowheat ,

It sure does.

mellowheat OP ,

Yeah, it’s not a lot percentually: that coral reef is estimated to be roughly 4600 square kilometers (though I found another source saying it to be over 26000).

But then again, the Amazon Forest is 6,7 million square kilometers, so if you look at just the numbers, it doesn’t seem like much if 10 000 square kilometers is lost every year.

This thing right here is practically 1800s death math metal: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJR0WF_vVmU – unfortunately this is the cut version and the full 10+ minute version doesn’t seem to be available anymore. Even more unfortunate that the pianist, who was born in Kyiv, turned out to want Russia to annex Ukraine.

Some years ago, I learned to play that bit at 1:10. That was a good moment.

e: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDdQiLZPTF8 here’s a pretty good full rendition

e2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPv_CsTye5s perhaps even better

Incredibly, The Russian Air Force Has Lost Another Rare A-50 Radar Plane (www.forbes.com)

Incredibly, the Russian air force has lost another one of its rare Beriev A-50M/U Mainstay radar early-warning planes. Video that circulated online on Friday reportedly depicts the A-50’s burning wreckage in Krasnodar Krai, in Russia just east of the Sea of Azov....

If what you’re saying is true, I think it’s pretty refreshing that US military and intelligence services are doing something good for a change.

You need to learn a skill that leads to a living wage. Demanding politicians to directly do that is pointless, they are absolutely unable to give you that. The only thing they can directly do is set a minimum wage, which is essentially a lie. It doesn’t actually give you a minimum/living wage, instead it makes you completely unemployable if your wage level is between 0-(minimum wage).

As u/nomad mentioned, demanding structures that make getting an education easier or give you safety nets when things go to shit, or basic income/negative tax rates for low incomes is something politicans can do. But don’t demand stupid things like minimum wage, they might actually do those.

mellowheat ,

Not sure what you have against minimum wage,

Having bit more than basic education in economics, I suppose.

It’s a fantasy that everyone can be educated to a level above minimum wage.

Is it more or less a fantasy than the fantasy that every employer is able to pay the minimum wage?

mellowheat ,

I don’t know you, but I can guess: it’s almost never the individual’s fault. But we should still look for efficient solutions, not populist non-solutions.

mellowheat ,

Indeed. That’s exactly what will happen. And then people whose wage level is below the minimum wage will be unemployed.

mellowheat ,

I agree on UBI. That would be a good solution.

mellowheat ,

Or UBI as we seemed to agree on other part of the thread. Either of these are better solutions than minimum wage.

mellowheat , (edited )

That video does give good arguments, but to suggest that this is not a controversial issue in economics is perhaps a bit dishonest. Granted, I suppose I suggested that as well.

e: that channel’s Breadtube vs Economics series seem pretty good, thanks for the pointer. Seems like the channel is left-leaning, and this makes me doubly happy. A political left with good knowledge on economics would be a great thing.

mellowheat ,

Good counterpoint, thanks for that.

mellowheat ,

Yes, that’s what happens in a minimum wage environment, although not every single time like people have shown in these threads. But when somebody doesn’t start a business, that’s invisible.

What is visible is when an existing business’s costs rise above the minimum wage level. There are plenty of reasons why this could happen, 9/10 of them not being “the C-levels are paid too much”. That’s when they start firing people or just go under which essentially fires everyone.

Perhaps we want a society that don’t have employment for the people who can only work below a minimum wage level. That’s some sort of a decision, I just want to be honest about making that decision.

mellowheat ,

5/5 I mean this tracks extremely well irregardless of which side of the fence you are.

mellowheat ,

Agree with you completely. Now shut up.

mellowheat ,

Haha, got me. Dunno which brain damage was responsible of that.

TikTok, Facebook and YouTube sued by New York City for alleged harm to kids’ mental health (www.nbcnews.com)

TikTok, Facebook and YouTube sued by New York City for alleged harm to kids’ mental health ::New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday that his administration has filed a lawsuit against the parent companies of TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube, alleging that their services are damaging to the mental health...

mellowheat ,

We allow children to buy and use these devices but it’s the companies who are at fault.

Like, hey, how about doing your job and making some new legislation?

mellowheat ,

Yeah, it’s way too difficult for parents to handle this. Where I live perhaps roughly 10% of parents even think of this as a problem.

Google apologizes for ‘missing the mark’ after Gemini generated racially diverse Nazis (www.theverge.com)

Google apologizes for ‘missing the mark’ after Gemini generated racially diverse Nazis::Google says it’s aware of historically inaccurate results for its Gemini AI image generator, following criticism that it depicted historically white groups as people of color.

mellowheat ,

I want the tool to just do its fucking job. And if I specifically ask for a thing, just give me that. I don’t mind it injecting a bit of diversity in say, a crowd scene - but it’s also doing it in places where it’s simply not appropriate and not what I asked for.

The thing is, if it’s injecting diversity into a place where there shouldn’t have been diversity, this can usually be fixed by specifying better in the next prompt. Not by writing ragebait articles about it.

But yeah, I’d also be happy to be able to use an unhinged LLM once in a while.

mellowheat ,

This is clearly an attempt to get elected instead of the orange catastrophe.

mellowheat ,

NO right wing voter is going to support Biden. PERIOD. NONE. You will ONLY get votes for Biden stepping to the left. Literally every Democratic victory in 60 fucking years have happened that way. But yeah, keep pursuing these genocidal right of Rumsfield positions, Democrats. I"m sure you’ll find that center once you have cripwalked past Cheny’s undead beating heart of evil.

Sure, he’s not going to get any right-wing voters, but is he going to lose left-wing voters? There’s still a center, and the majority of people are in there. That majority cares about things like this.

THe entire last decade of political progress made by progressives has been lost because of this idiot.

What progress is that?

mellowheat ,

This dude believes it: www.rightsinrussia.org/aleksandr-verkhovsky/

Or is he a nazi as well?

mellowheat ,

I get that real actual nazis are horrible and need to be put down, but I feel like you’re exaggerating both the severity of Navalny’s political positions and downplaying Verkhovsky’s position by quite a bit.

mellowheat ,

Somehow I’m reminded of Dead Poets’ Society even though the specifics are quite different. But it seems like something (the overall culture?) is pushing a whole lot of confusion on children that wasn’t there 20 years ago.

But also, teenagers can be real shits sometimes. I had my part of that, and the weirdest thing I was was being a bit nerdy and socially inept.

mellowheat ,

How weird is it that without knowing what that account was I couldn’t tell if it’s far right or far left.

But yeah, it’s far right.

mellowheat ,

While it might be true that conservatist culture is a big reason why this person is now dead, I don’t think the majority of any group is celebrating on this. And it’s dehumanizing to paint any group like that.

mellowheat , (edited )

The only people responsible for this death are the people who bashed this person’s head on the floor (edit: autopsy seems to suggest that they were not the reason).

If we want to list the people who contributed to this death happening, the list is longer and contains elements you would probably not like to hear.

mellowheat ,

When you see your conservative neighbors, co-workers and relatives, remember they killed this innocent child. They did this.

Obviously they did not.

mellowheat ,

There’s a bit of media darwinism here. 15000-20000 teenagers die in USA every year. If the conditions hadn’t been what they were, this would not have broken the media barrier.

But of course, sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one. It could also be self-harm, it would track with not showing enough physical trauma from the altercation to cause death, but would still be indirectly caused by it. The publicized messages between Nex and their grandparents suggested that they (Nex) took the altercation quite casually, but perhaps that was just a front.

mellowheat , (edited )

This child’s blood is on their hands. Not just the kids who did the physical beating, but also the conservatives who set up a culture where this is acceptable.

Try to join the rest of us in reality when you can.

Well, if Nex’s sexual identity indeed was the reason they are dead, and all this had taken place, say, 20 years ago, nobody would’ve died because nobody would’ve asserted their sexual identity in public.

Should children have the privilege of asserting their sexual identity in public? I guess so. Does it sometimes have consequences? Bad as it is, yes. You may very well argue that something is wrong that when it has consequences, but that argument doesn’t yet remove the consequences.

So I think it is not me who’s not in sync with reality here.

e: gender identity in this case, not sexual identity

mellowheat ,

Transphobia and fascism isn’t natural law. It can and should be fought. “Aw man that’s just the way it is” is apologetic and defeatist at best.

Sure. But fighting is not a safe, one-sided activity. Sometimes you punch a fascist and sometimes the fascist punches back.

While it’s all brave and great, I still feel not absolutely great about the idea of having children fight these battles.

mellowheat ,

You must be real fun to talk to.

Oh, I should let you know that people frequently enjoy a fake laugh to stop me talking.

What if instead of expressing gender identity, it was expressing Christianity or political alignments that resulted in this?

Why would you think these would be different?

mellowheat ,

Homelessness wasn’t a thing.

Homelessness was illegal in Soviet Union. USA has plenty of problems that are objectively worse in this area, but I’m not sure if just declaring it illegal and sending vagrants to labor camps is a very good solution either.
