Maths/CogSci/MathPsych lazyweb: Are there any algebras in which you have subtraction but don't have negative values? Pointers appreciated. I am hoping that the abstract maths might shed some light on a problem in cognitive modelling.

The context is that I am interested in formal models of cognitive representations and I want to represent things (e.g. cats), don't believe that we should be able to represent negated things (i.e. I don't think it should be able to represent anti-cats), but it makes sense to subtract representations (e.g. remove the representation of a cat from the representation of a cat and a dog, leaving only the representation of the dog).

This might also be related to non-negative factorisation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-negative_matrix_factorization

@RossGayler @Heterokromia @cogsci to me it seems you need to be more clear on your requirements. Are your non-negative and multidimensional requirements independent, as far as you can tell?

If so, a multidimensional (do you know how many dimensions/animals you have?) modulo space sounds a viable solution. That'd be something denoted as https://www.HostMath.com/Show.aspx?Code=%5Cmathbb%7BZ%7D_k%5En , with k being the cardinality of one dimension (would they need to have different cardinalities?), and n being the number of dimensions.

Our paper on the values found in fairy tales from some European countries has been published. We studied how values are explicitly present in tales from Germany, Italy and Portugal using various NLP techniques, but most notably Word2Vec and Word Embedding with a Compass. We visualise synchronic semantic variation to show certain differences based on observations of the corpus, some of them already observed in previous literature. A discussed example in our findings is how motherhood in Germany is strongly related to generosity, whereas in Italy and Portugal it has stronger relationship to wisdom.

At the University of Milan we are seeking a research fellow to participate in the “MetaLing Corpus: Creating a corpus of English linguistics metalanguage from the 16th to the 18th century” project:
https://expertise.unimi.it/resource/project/PRIN202223AANDR%5F01

Through archival research and corpus compilation, the project aims to assess the genres and text-types involved in the circulation of linguistic knowledge, and to throw light onto unconventional texts and voices besides the major works and figures on which scholarship has naturally concentrated. The project is divided into three phases 1) collection of texts, 2) building the corpus, 3) lexical extraction and database creation, combining human and computational tools. The core part of our study will involve the analysis of the terminology, discursive strategies and descriptive metaphors used to describe and compare languages in English, in diachronic perspective.

The successful applicant will work with the project team to identify relevant primary materials and build an electronic corpus of texts. The post is for someone with a postgraduate degree in Linguistics, English, Computer Science or related discipline. Candidates may or may not have a doctorate at the time of application. The researcher will have the opportunity to contribute to the project database, work in archives, and develop academic writing in individual and joint papers.

Post: Postdoctoral research fellow, Early stage researcher or 0-4 yrs (Post graduate)
Location: Milan (on-site)
Duration: 18 months, fixed-term/contract
Salary: EUR 21,888 per annum
Closes: 4th January 2024
Interview date: 16th January 2024

@CitizenWald @histodons you seem to be trying to address cheap identitarian racism with a scientific argument. Allow me to challenge that such approach is meaningful. There's a gap between how readers perceive the two arguments, and it doesn't play in your favour in the case of those representatives of the majority in Western countries who are looking for reinforcement of their views.

For an interpretation that is somewhat defining for the issue, consider the notion of epistemic vigilance:
"This debate between reductionism and anti-reductionism revolves around two distinct issues, one normative and the other descriptive. The normative issue has to
do with the conditions in which a belief acquired through testimony qualifies as knowledge. The descriptive issue has to do with the cognitive and social practices
involved in the production and acceptance of testimony. The two issues are explicitly linked in a ‘third way’ approach which assumes that our actual practices, which involve some degree of vigilance, are likely to be reasonable, and therefore at least indicative of what the norm should be (e.g. Adler, 2003, Fricker, 2006)."

Language, Thought and Reality
Selected Writings of Benjamin Lee Whorf

The pioneering linguist Benjamin Whorf (1897–1941) grasped the relationship between human language and human thinking: how language can shape our innermost thoughts. His basic thesis is that our perception of the world and our ways of thinking about it are deeply influenced by the structure of the languages we speak.

Today, all but 2 of my students left intro class for walkout. I excused them but noted 2 ironies:

  1. They were engaging in a symbolic activity instead of studying & during

  2. They had not known names of US icons A. Philip Randolph, Thurgood Marshall, Mary McLeod Bethune, Marianne Anderson--yet presumed to understand the intricacies of one of the most tragic & intractable conflicts on earth
    ¯_(ツ)_/¯
