Cool! Welcome on board of Planet Linux. 🐧

I often do like these posts, because it usually shows their past suffering, and the new freedom they enjoy. It is also an opportunity to share the common community feeling with them.

After all, to me many years ago when I saw Linux booting for the very first time (no GUI, just lots of text from the kernel) that was one thing about Linux that I liked : names of human beings visible. If you look at software by Microsoft or Apple on computer installations you will normally see zero names, it is all very formal.

Social interaction between Linux users, starting with solving Linux questions, has been there for years in forums. I like seeing people help other people and move forward together.

Same with newcomer posts. I think if the posters get redirected to the correct sub

And what sub would you suggest ?

Well said, and a nice read. 👍

Thinking about this I think that a lot of consumers who buy their new laptops will have ChromeOS, Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac OS pre-installed, and when they have problems with it, most of them might go back to the shop to get help, or even buy just another new computer. Another good feature of Linux is that it does not necessarily force you into hardware upgrades every few years, and it can even run on all kind of devices., making Linux flexible and sustainable.

I believe that both VirtualBox and KVM (QEMU) can do USB passthrough. With either one you can have the full Windows OS running on your Linux desktop, which could be more comfortable than going for WINE. Here’s an example with KVM and Arch Linux.

Tuta may be ticking all your 5 entries. You can simply test it, sign up, pay the 12 Euros per year, go for custom domain and check the options.

How about Fastmail then ?

I finally nuked windows

I have been daily driving a dual booted laptop for the past two years. After a year of distro hopping I settled with fedora + kde and never looked back. I really liked the auto nvidia driver config and it made everything so pleasant to work. Since the last 8 or 9 months I decided to do gaming using bottles and proton ge. I...

Hey 👋 dear Linux Community,

I'm still kinda new to Linux (started using this year 😅) I already made it to my main OS, even if I still missing some things which I used on Windows, anyway. What I wanted to ask you guys, what recommendations do you have for Linux Mint (Cinnamon)? In terms of security, optimization, (a way to make the UI looking modern ;-;) and privacy? I would be very interested in what you do guys to optimize your Linux setup :) I'm pretty technical, so there is nothing which could overwhelm me (probaly).

Thx! 🤍

Hi Linux user :) It makes some sense to define your threat model first.. That can save time and make things clear for yourself. For example, are you using a desktop computer that you will never take outside and are you living at the 13th floor ? Or do you have a laptop that you take with you every day ? In the latter case it may make sense to look at disk encryption. A nice toy to play with some security and privacy things on Linux is Tails.. Tails is also an easy way to show friends, family and colleagues some security and privacy features of Linux on a small pen drive, or to carry a few files safely with you.

On the Fediverse with micro-blogging like Mastodon, Pleroma and similar there is a hashtag which is related to work. I forgot what the exact hashtag is but I saw other people recommending it whenever people ask for job opportunities. If you get a match you may be able to contact them directly via email. Good luck!

You can find older software on F-Droid which is not updated for several reasons. One reason can be that the compiling of newer versions of the software didn’t work on the F-Droid compile setup. And I’ve read that, if uploading of newer versions is omitted for some reason, F-Droid leaves older versions of software in their repository because there are people with older Android smart phones that cannot run newer versions, and even when there would be security issues, these users are free to take the risk and use the software.

Best to ask your question on the F-Droid forum, where you can also search for answers without creating an account and where some F-Droid devs may answer : forum.f-droid.org
