I read STARLING HOUSE by months ago when it was a planned October 31 release. It snuck past me and got released October 3, and is the October Reese Book Club pick, and deservedly so! My 5-star review was posted to my blog back in April https://jillsreads.com/starling-house/ @bookstodon

@bookstodon Tomorrow (today in Australia and New Zealand) is Awareness Day. What really good novels have you read that feature older protagonists?

These come to my mind:

Remnant Population, Elizabeth Moon

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, Olga Tokarczuk

Deacon King Kong, James McBride

We Spread, Iain Reid

Old God's Time, Sebastian Barry

@DarkMatterZine @kimlockhartga @bookstodon Lavoy. One of the best narrators. I listened to one YA book in which she did a dozen voices.

@DarkMatterZine @kimlockhartga @bookstodon Listening now! I had remembered that some magic mature woman in a novel said of her rewilding lawn “this is how it wants to be” but it had slipped my mind that it was Harriet Osborne in the novel The Change!

There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (in English):
“It is inevitable — the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊

Book folks, what’s your most anticipated fall read?

There’s so much that’s either freshly out or coming soon that I’m excited for, I don’t know how I’m gonna keep up! I already hit the Lauren Groff and Zadie Smith, and now I’m starting on Penance by Eliza Clark, which is intense right out of the gate…

@lunalein @bookstodon I think I already read of all of my most anticipated fall reads and a good number of winter ones. My most anticipated Spring 2024 read is THE FAMILIAR by Leigh Bardugo. No last time I checked!

THE UNFORTUNATE EFFECTS OF HEARTBREAK AND MAGIC by Breanne Randall has been released. Mini-review: this witchy cozy could get schmaltzy and redundant with the romance, and the plot line with the scary malevolent presence went nowhere, but I loved Poppy Meadows, a town founded by ten magical families of different ethnicities and religions who, as a result of their differences, have different kinds of magic! Three stars. Will look for more from this author. @bookstodon

Ok, so my thread complaining about my reading slump got to be miles long and full of awesome recs, but whoever recommended THE GREAT CIRCLE by Maggie Shipstead (2021), thank you. Slump over! It's a great piece of writing. @bookstodon

I'm in a reading slump! I had a long weekend and couldn't get any book to "catch." I need ideas! Something that grabs the reader from paragraph one but isn't a thriller. @bookstodon

@dbsalk @bookstodon she’s one of the very best audiobook narrators. I also think January Lavoy is very talented.

@fskornia @dbsalk @bookstodon my thoughts exactly. Loved Benjamin Bratt’s voice work on that audiobook.

jillrhudy OP ,
@jillrhudy@mastodon.social avatar

@DoubleTreble @rdviii @bookstodon not really! Lessons in Chemistry really was a lot deeper and more complex than the cover suggested it would be.

jillrhudy OP ,
@jillrhudy@mastodon.social avatar

@dbsalk @BertL @bookstodon that is why audiobook popularity is exploding. The talent and production value going into them. Once you start listening to audiobooks, you are hooked.

@andrewspink @DoubleTreble @rdviii @bookstodon Good review and we are agreed on the three stars. You never can tell about these cartoon cover books. Some are total fluff. Some are great, like, IMO, Flying Solo by Linda Holmes.

jillrhudy OP ,

@andrewspink @DoubleTreble @rdviii @bookstodon I would put Lessons in Chemistry in the middle leaning toward good. I really enjoyed reading it.

@arratoon @bookstodon Bel Canto is a straight up masterpiece IMHO. Utterly riveting.

jillrhudy OP ,
@jillrhudy@mastodon.social avatar

@arratoon @bookstodon I mean, yes, Joe is not super fleshed out but I think that’s kind of the point of him. He’s just a good solid man, like Hardy’s Gabriel Oak. He’s a contrast to the flashy superstar dude, and all the reasons why the MC’s marriage is a great one are kinda private and inscrutable to outsiders and even her daughters, if that makes sense? Patchett draws the veil of secrecy and sanctity around those two. For me it works.

jillrhudy OP ,
@jillrhudy@mastodon.social avatar

@BertL @dbsalk @bookstodon I have it on hold and will give it a try. Sounds like my sort of book for sure.

jillrhudy OP ,

I loved SCARLET so much that I read it last night in one sitting then came to work today and grabbed another Cogman, THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY. I didn't know I needed a Scarlet Pimpernel retelling with vampires, but this novel is oodles better than it sounds! What a ripping yarn! @bookstodon
