In case anyone needs it spelled out, its because racists use “monkey” as a slur

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Do you say that towards a group of Black people? Then yeah, probably.

Do you say it to a bunch of kids acting silly? Then no, you’re probably good

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

You could follow journalists you like or outlets though

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Like, white people in general?

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

If I’m taking this seriously, OP seems to be getting at the idea that people always insinuate “the other” is responsible for horrors, but that people in the same group are innocent? I don’t think everyone does that though

jeffw , (edited )
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Everyone values different things. Personally, I’m not quite ready for kids (even though I’m past the age where my parents had kids and some of my friends/colleagues my age have kids, I’m about your age), but I’m ready to take on more at work. I find it rewarding and I can make more money. And although money doesn’t create happiness, it buys some dope shit. And not advancing at work just gets boring and repetitive. Ig it’s like that urban legend about sharks needing to swim…

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

It’s easy to say: “other people do things because of pressure, I do things because I want to.” But that kinda oversimplifies free will, power dynamics, and other similar concepts. Why is charity rewarding to you? Because someone gave you a pat on the back? Couldn’t we boil it all down to extrinsic motivators? Some people might not feel good “giving away” their time to charity. You don’t feel good having kids. It’s all perspective.

Is this anti-Reddit? It’s still up like almost 20% since the IPO?

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Now change the view to anything but 1 day. Line go up. So what?

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

So it went straight up for a week and had a 1 day correction but is still way up over the past 72 hours. What am I missing here?

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not anti-nuclear, but from my understanding it’s not necessarily cost or resource-effective to build new plants, since other renewables have advanced so rapidly

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

To your point, I don’t know that him being vice president would have made the world a better place, more so the lack of a different vice president or the presence of Gore and his prioritization of climate issues

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Pretty sure the little slit was so that you could use a flathead screwdriver. Had to do that a couple times

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, I could’ve been doing it wrong lol

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

They won’t give trans people over to ICE or?

Jokes aside, this is a great move. Idk if “sanctuary city” is the right term though.

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, but the term “sanctuary city” applies to protection from ICE or other immigration/deportation activities

How do I get my suit tailored?

I bought a cheap suit with the intention of making it look good through tailoring, but I don’t know how to actually get that done. The local stores don’t have websites and haven’t picked up when I called, should I just walk in with the suit? Do I need an appointment? Also, how much should I expect to pay? (California)...

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Are you buying short sized jackets? And did you keep in mind vanity sizing means the chest size might not 100% match your measurement?

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I like Uniqlo for basics, but I wouldn’t trust them for suiting tbh. They do some basic alterations free in store though. I’d check that out before a tailor, just to save a few bucks

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Vanity sizing is less common in suits, but chest size can be tricky. If you’re a 35 and the suit only comes in 34 and 36, for example. And yeah, suit jackets should have either S, R, or L for short, regular, and long sizes.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’s gotten more frequent and explicit more recently. At least that’s my impression from news I’ve read, never watched her

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

And what do those companies produce? A lot of them make food. They don’t give a fuck as long as people keep eating insane amounts of meat.

But if it makes you feel better, abdicate your personal responsibility and point the finger. But no matter how you vote, it won’t save the world as long as meat production is going up. They don’t raise the cows if you don’t buy the beef

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Actually, quite the opposite. As long as you buy beef, cattle will continue to be a major driver of climate change. Under capitalism, it only gets produced because you buy it

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’s a trade secret. Probably something like how Guinness used to use fish bladders as a filter

“He killed 5 people, I only killed 1!” Is not a valid defense of criminal activity. Nor does “concrete is worse than our food chain” mean we shouldn’t fix it

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Worldwide? Not necessarily, no. Most of the growth in beef demand in particular is in developing nations. Subsidies increase access, but they don’t create demand in and of themself

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

That’s the joke I thought he was trying to hint at lol

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

All this pussy shit about attacking one of the worst emitting industries on the planet? Ig im a huge pussy because I love fighting climate change

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

It’s totally the case. Beef is one of the worst products out there because it produces methane, one of the worst GHGs pound for pound.

There’s also incredible inefficiencies with beef, since it takes more calories to raise than any other type of meat (or, god forbid, just growing plants and eating them). This isn’t really a matter of opinion, it’s just the reality of climate change

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I think the other commenter hit it on the head

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

If I donate to a charity, I can’t hire my friend and pay them a 6 figure salary. No idea how it’s even similar.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Ok, let me walk you through the math. I have avoided 100k of my tax burden by donating 100k to my charity. I pay my employee that money. They pay an effective tax rate of 20%. The government gets 20k of my original tax rate. My nonprofit grooms and breeds gerbils. I created this nonprofit that does not exist because I love gerbils. Now the US govt has more gerbils and lost 80k in tax revenue.

But that’s the same as me donating to the ACLU or some shit?

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar
jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Except you claim every dollar of your donation, not 30%?

jeffw OP , (edited )
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

You donate 100k, you get a 100k tax break…

www.irs.gov/…/charitable-contribution-deductions

Maybe you’re confused by the limit of how much of your AGI can be deducted?

In general, contributions to charitable organizations may be deducted up to 50 percent of adjusted gross income computed without regard to net operating loss carrybacks. Contributions to certain private foundations, veterans organizations, fraternal societies, and cemetery organizations are limited to 30 percent adjusted gross income (computed without regard to net operating loss carrybacks), however. Tax Exempt Organization Search uses deductibility status codes to indicate these limitations.

That does not mean you claim 30% of the donation

jeffw OP , (edited )
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I linked to the IRS and 3 other sources? It sounds like you aren’t American. Check out our tax laws

And next time you want to pretend to be American, don’t say shit like “maths” that gives away where you’re from

And just for clarification, I’m not the guy you were talking to in this thread

jeffw OP , (edited )
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

That’s cute, you misread a basic article about US taxes and now refuse to read anything I’ve linked lol.

You’re stating fallacies that are debunked in my links from the IRS. But if you think the IRS is lying about tax law, by all means, link me your references

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

That’s cute how you’re putting words in my mouth and pretending to be a tax expert. Kinda funny that you’re a tax expert who doesn’t know what AGI means lol.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

They actually are just making shit up, just ignore them (or read all their comments for shits and giggles, but they have no idea what they are talking about)
