Tfw it’s an important topic but it’s a right wing rag

Sanctions disproportionately hurt innocent civilians. Sanctioning individuals is one thing but entire nations shouldn’t be sanctioned. I thought we learned our lesson from Cuba but apparently not

Edit: for all the neolibs and righties downvoting me, this probably won’t do much to convince you. For anyone else, here’s an explanation on why sanctions are a terrible idea:

www.thenation.com/article/archive/…/tnamp/

Here’s an in depth look at why sanctions fail:

www.jstor.org/stable/2539368

Basically, the entire point of sanctions if to hurt civilians. The logic is supposed to be that they will rise up and force a political change due to being angry and, often, starving to death. But that rarely happens. We just end up torturing poor people while wealthy elites get by just fine.

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Varying success politically, yes. But it always damages innocent civilians.

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

It’s still inhumane. It’s fine to starve people out via sanctions but not via bombings? There’s a reason people like Sanders continue to oppose sanctions

In terms of games, Kingdom Hearts and Guitar Hero were highlights of my childhood.

I thought the Dreamcast had the weakest technical specs of that generation? PS2 was also earlier than other consoles in that generation, so slightly lower specs makes sense.

CSAM back when those losers spammed Lemmy with it

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

What privilege? Meat is the most expensive food out there. Eating rice and beans isn’t really showing privilege

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Seems like most people on this post have fallen into the trap of judging a group based on a loud subset of the group. Most vegans/vegetarians I know don’t like to share that they are veg precisely because of that stereotype.

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Except meat is the least efficient protein source. You need land to grow animal feed, which largely could be used to grow crops to feed humans. You put in like 100 calories to get 1 calorie out.

Has anyone here noticed how reddit has gotten more racist against Indians in the last few months (lemmy.world)

It’s something I’ve seen slowly starting to emerge over the course of the last year or so. Maybe even longer. There’s accounts that post stories to designed to shock people into thinking India is a terrible place. Like I get it. India does have issues. And it does have issues with sexual violence as well. But its a shame...

Probably just more now because the elections make international headlines and Modi has been pulling some weird stunts. It’ll probably die back down.

Craziest part of your comment is how every takeout place has the exact same food. Anyone in America could go to one of the cheap takeout places and have the experience you described

Idk that we can do any better than “he said, she said” at this point. Gotta wait for names to be released and independently confirmed

Adams had made the “outside agitator” claim that sounded like pure BS. This gives his statement at least a semblance of accuracy

I would doubt that. It seems rare that professors are getting engaged. Not unheard of but it’s a small portion of the overall protestors. A question worth asking though

Who would do this? Just spam false reports on this form that takes just a couple minutes to fill out?

Edit: this is a very serious PSA. If you are wasting people’s time and resources, they won’t pursue your leads if they are obviously false. They need to be realistic. But like… don’t waste their time, that would be mean and maybe illegal

jeffw OP ,

The crazy thing is I swear this happened before. Shit, I swear I posted an article like this on Lemmy once. I even made a similar comment and have a vague memory of a mod or someone getting mad at me for encouraging people to spam the website (I would never! I’m just sharing information). Can’t remember what state it was and it might have been a slightly different law. Maybe it was reporting abortions in Texas?

Reddit mirrors

I know it’s not popular and I’m typically against it but I was listening to a podcast and it made me think there are absolutely important communities that shouldn’t be on a centralised platform like Reddit. The contents of them are so important that it should be on the Open Social Web. I’m wondering if there is someone...

One area that I’m familiar with, lost films and film preservation, is not done by Redditors. I’ve met some of this country’s top archivists and even toured one of the country’s biggest vaults. This is work done by a handful of highly trained professionals. Many can do half assed jobs, but doing it right requires serious training in film history, archival techniques, and other topics in art.

Basically, Reddit contributes nothing to film preservation.

Who else wakes up and has to blow their nose or clear their airways every morning and why?

I’m guessing it’s from dry air god me but even with humidifier I always have to blow my nose a bunch of times in the morning. Sometimes my lungs feel tight for a while after waking up. This happen to anybody else? Why does it happen for you?

In addition to other suggestions here (all good ones so far), maybe an allergy? Could be something about your pillow

Do you take an antihistamine? I live on Zyrtec and would be miserable if I didn’t take it daily

Does anyone know of a decent replacement for Sunkist Diet Lemonade soda (which was taken off the shelves maybe a decade ago)?

It was a sparkling lemonade/soda with zero sugar or calories, but still tasted sweet enough and highly refreshing when cold. Would also accept a replacement for the non-diet version, which in my region of the US was unavailable even before they got rid of the diet version.

jeffw , (edited )
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

There’s tons of diet lemonades. You might be able to buy a diet powder and combine it with a Sodastream (carbonate you own water and then add the powder. Or buy sparkling water and add the powder). Other than that, Orangina comes to mind. But that’s more sparking orange-ade

Conservatives who hate their own people, a classic pairing. Like Chianti and liver

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I’m not surprised. A couple people on this post suggested that might be a lie too but it seems too absurd to lie about. Trying to shift the story from “fit of rage” to “calm and calculated decision” sounds more realistic.

Codifying Roe would be pointless when SCOTUS has said it’s a state’s rights issue

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not following. The process to amend the constitution is far more complicated than passing a federal law. SCOTUS effectively blocked any federal law in their ruling that said it is a states’ rights issue. A federal law would not have changed that
