Did Reddit do something stupid to scare people away again?

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

And pie charts with more than 3 segments

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Activity seems to be up, not just users. It’s also active users, not just accounts

I run many small communities and it kills me when people from “all” downvote stuff.

If you don’t care about the topic, block the community or skip the posts

The idea behind this community should be that you think “wait, really? Is that serious or satire?” when you see the story. With all due respect, I disagree with some of the recent removals. Here are 4 examples:

  1. Removed Post Trump brands US a ‘fascist state’ in 40-minute rant amid wild scenes outside his Manhattan home

Did Trump accuse other people of fascism? That’s absurd because he’s a fascist.

  1. Removed Post Kansas Constitution does not include a right to vote, state Supreme Court majority says

This is lunacy, why would a constitution not guarantee basic rights? Reads like a joke about conservatives.

  1. Removed Post Erdogan: Netanyahu is a ‘psychopath’ and a ‘vampire that feeds on blood’

This one is close but it’s still hilarious because it’s a “pot calls kettle black” situation. It does utilize antisemetic tropes though.

  1. Removed Post Penn should do more to combat anti-Jewish bias on campus and reissue a statement opposing divestment from Israel, a university task force says

Really? The school should be doing the opposite. It reads like a joke mocking out of touch boomers.

Granted, that’s maybe 4 of the 25 most recent removed posts but I think they all have Onion-y elements. I’d just advise caution, especially when you’re adding new mods who might not have much experience. I’m not saying you’re doing a bad job moderating but I’d be careful of caving to light pressure from users. I get bad reports all the time (the majority of reports I get as a mod are not accurate).

Edit: the thing about satire and humor is that it is subjective. Not everyone will think a joke is funny and not everyone will think satire is funny because they’ll claim it’s too close to reality.

Edit again: just for transparency, 2 of the 4 I’ve shared are my posts. I’ve had other posts deleted that were appropriate deletions. I don’t want this to come off as me bitching about my posts getting deleted.

Except even in this comment section, I’ve got people saying how many of them are Onion-y.

Your comment just proves my point about subjectivity

Let’s pretend these articles are real:

theonion.com/u-s-army-recruiter-has-bound-gagged-…

theonion.com/advisors-assure-biden-this-will-blow…

Is that not depressing? Depressing news can be Onion-y. I just pulled 2 examples from today’s front page, as you did.

The issue here seems everyone has a different take on what it means to be Onion-y. You mention it can’t be depressing, someone else said it has to subvert expectations, etc. Yet, there are counter-examples for those things from The Onion itself. Again, my point is that “what is Onion-y?” Is an incredibly subjective question. I’d encourage a broad answer to that question when you’re moderating.

@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Do these onion articles subvert any expectations?

theonion.com/advisors-assure-biden-this-will-blow…

theonion.com/new-florida-law-requires-all-women-t…

theonion.com/trump-boys-attempt-to-bribe-juror-wi…

The 3 topics are: Trump’s team engages in bribery, Flrodia attacks women, and Biden allows the Gaza genocide. How do those things subvert expectations? Quite the opposite, they play off the obvious

Edit: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire

Satire is a genre of the visual, literary, and performing arts, usually in the form of fiction and less frequently non-fiction, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, often with the intent of exposing or shaming the perceived flaws of individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into improvement

Satire does not require subversion of expectations

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

And that pretty much proves my point about subjectivity. You don’t think so yet other commenters agreed with me. Everyone on here has a different hot take on what “Onion-y” means, largely based on their expectations, not reality. Moderators should lean towards leaving up posts because it’s such a subjective decision.

Traditional methods of stock valuation went out the window when people turned specific stocks into memes. It’s playing with fire, really

Trump also came out against the ban recently, the day after meeting with a major donor (Yass iirc) who owns a large stake in ByteDance

There was a Slaughter in Congress. Longest serving at the time of her death maybe 5-6 years ago. Funny, her yard signs just said “Louise”

Right? What do these people think would happen? Trump calls in the military to fight NYPD?

jeffw OP ,

Independents will be so important

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

No but he could pardon himself on any federal charge. It’s not crazy talk

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure what you mean about making state charges into federal ones

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I agree leftists will be important but there are just more is the independents. A lot of those leftists are young (ie: people who rarely vote anyway)

What are you talking about? Did the US put those limits on the strikes inside Russia?

jeffw OP , (edited )
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

??? This was like the second biggest news story of the past week? The point of the article is about the relaxation of those limits

None of them have been as aggressive as TikTok. Most US social media companies have failed to curtail right wing bigots but that a separate conversation from TikTok tbh

Yeah your links don’t address the actual data disparities though. I love Vox but that article is super naive.

Edit: and the other link doesn’t really say much else

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Been done before and it’s really not informative. You could literally just (sorry if this scares you) talk to a Black person. They are capable of communicating the Black experience. White people don’t need to do it for them
