You know what would slow it down a lot? Legislating that anything created with data sets using publicly available data cannot be copyrighted or trademarked. And while we’re at it, lets create a bill of privacy rights for people.

I mean, obviously this does matter, but given that the 1% are the ones causing as much pollution as the combined poorest 50% of the world, I feel like we need to ground bizjets a lot more than we need to noodle over whether or not office work causes more pollution than remote work.

As much as I hate this and want it not to be true, it sure as hell looks true to me.

I mean, I dislike Biden pretty intensely but whatever alternative the Republicans are going to field is basically going to be using The Handmaid’s Tale as a how-to guide, so I’ll still be voting for him alas.

We desperately need ranked voted for all elections, and we need it yesterday so we can start to get away from this stupid 2 party system where everyone can only vote for the guy they think might win the final election rather than being able to rank the candidates by who they like the most with “the guy that can win” as a safety backup to who they like the most so their vote isn’t thrown away.

I mean… they shouldn’t be supporting Xitter anyway. And encouraging people to use IG and FB is just as bad basically.

Ideally they should run their own Mastodon instance and provide announcements and support there.

Is it just me or did OP post the wrong link? Here is one that goes to an actual article about the asteroid.

Fstoppers on YouTube: Printer Ink, It's a SCAM (www.youtube.com)

In this video, a Canon print cartridge is opened up and revealed not to contain the meagre 11.9 ml (0.4 fl oz) of ink it is advertised. The proposed solution is to buy a printer designed to be manually refilled with bottles of ink (such as the featured Epson EcoTank ET-2850), though it has only been tested briefly.

I feel like a Brother laser printer is a much better solution unless you specifically need color. Also, if you try and print with a laser printer after a couple months of disuse, it should fire right up and print. The same is not necessarily true of an ink jet, where things may have dried out and clogged.

This definitely feels like a “you made your bed now sleep in it” situation. If they underbid to get the grants, that’s their problem. I am so tired of corporate socialism.

heavyboots ,
@heavyboots@lemmy.ml avatar

Let 3 or 4 go under as an example to the rest and see if they suddenly find they can make it happen after all? I do feel like there’s some merit to the idea they are gaming the system with lowball bids.

Well, he means absolutely only his speech should be free, of course.

Sure sure, and by that logic, I also submit that the Supreme Court lacks the power to impose their own ethics on an entire gender.

Makes sense. Apple has tied their corporate identity pretty closely to protecting personal privacy and they’ve also set up E2E encryption of iCloud pretty recently (end of last year). Probably just easier to turn off those communication options then to try and deliberately punch holes in the protections they’ve set up.

Requires logging into Plex to even try it out, alas. Fastest add and delete ever.

How do you decide when to give up on a book?

I read The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, and take enjoyed it. Read another book, then started reading Devil and the Dark Water by the same author. I got about 25% through and just decided to drop it for something else. I’m not an avid reader so i never know if I should stay committed or not.

heavyboots ,
@heavyboots@lemmy.ml avatar

I generally give up after 100 pages or so if it hasn’t caught my interest by then.

Life is too short to slog through a book just because other people liked it.

All this did for me was escalate the memes on here enough to finally make me block c/memes and various imitations…

I feel like this is almost where Apple is ahead of the game. Despite the EU hating it, they’ve been using the same lightning cable design for a long old time because it works well enough, it doesn’t suffer USB-A’s put it in 3 times to figure out which direction is right, and people have a billion of them laying around at this point.

EDIT: Too many people to respond to individually but I do realize from a technical perspective it’s an inferior cable. Just saying the user experience was better for a long time before USB-C arrived and the fact they never changed it makes it easy to find a cable to use if you forgot yours etc. Yes it’s slow but I am not transferring stuff off and my iPhone regularly, no I’ve never had one die from the pins burning out (although I do know people that’s happened to).

As for USB-C, I agree it’s better on paper and was excited when I got a laptop with USB-C but my personal experience trying to buy a PD cable that would actually deliver the rated 100w it was supposed to was abysmal. Went through multiple cables from Amazon that didn’t work for some reason, including Anker, and finally gave up and bought a cable from Apple that did work. But the fact some of them don’t do what they say they will and the fact you can end up with multiple black cables that all do different things but are completely unmarked as to what they do has made me very irritated with USB-C at this point, even while I do enjoy the higher speeds and power they can deliver once you figure out which cable is which.

I feel like this is the equivalent of trying to put out a kitchen fire with hand grenades. Which is to say, very much the wrong tool for the job.

As others have noted, what you really want to do is get the storm over cool water and it will fizzle out on its own.

I feel like it is very unlikely it was Eweka if all the files were incomplete/corrupted? They very rarely are with that service. Stuff that is like 6 or 8 years old comes down fine from there quite frequently.

I will say that if the show you are looking for is by a large enough company, they may have hired a takedown service that will delete just enough files to cause the entire thing to be corrupt depending on the newsgroup provider. Mainstream usenet service providers get hit the worst. If it’s something you really want to see, you may only have a few hours to DL it before it is corrupted in that case.

Oh definitely Mastodon. I’m having a blast over there, tons of fun people. Plus, the fact you can follow hashtags makes it super, super easy to populate your timeline with interesting content and then if it’s too much, you can pick a few people you like who are interested in that and just start following them instead, which gradually translates into a very organic feeling timeline without a long period of crickets while you look for friends and make new friends.

Judge: And what forms of inducement did he use to hire them away?

Elon: Uh, well your honor, after I fired them all, he offered them stable employment?

YSK: You can block communities from appearing on your "All" feed. just go to the website of your instance, pull up the community, and click "block community" (On mobile click "Sidebar" first") (thelemmy.club)

Why YSK: You may dislike, disagree with, or be tired of certain communities and don’t want them in your feed.

heavyboots ,
@heavyboots@lemmy.ml avatar

And yet what I really, really want is the ability to block instances… any idea if/when that is coming? I know it’s a thing on Mastodon so it should be one here too, hopefully.

Just be glad it’s not all attached to your optic nerves yet…

Bud knew a guy like that who’d somehow gotten infected with a meme that ran advertisements for roach motels, in Hindi, superimposed on the bottom right-hand corner of his visual field, twenty-four hours a day, until the guy whacked himself. -The Diamond Age, Neal Stephenson
