“a history of good comments” - quote from founder of beehaw

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

heartlessevil ,

Not really to be honest. ActivityPub is a very inefficient protocol. My concerns are that it is HTTP based and that the files would need to be replicated across every federated instance. There are already scaling issues just from having to federate all the text.

Are they averse to conversation? They might not like to talk. But you might find that if you are feeling a person doesn’t want to communicate, it might be because you are not communicating well either. You need to use your own skills and take initiative.

I can point you to several skills.

dbt.tools/…/dear-man.php

Be very gentle using any interpersonal skills. Only ever speak from “I statements”. If it doesn’t work, it wasn’t meant to work.

I want to switch to Linux but there are a few major hurdles.

So I have a situation. I really want to switch to Linux as my main gaming/production OS but need the Adobe suite as I am a graphic designer. Adobe is the golden standard for this industry (and likely to always be) so while Gimp and Inkscape might work, they are not feasible for my career. I also know that there will be...

heartlessevil ,

You don’t need to “switch to Linux”. It’s not a binary decision. Dual booting or dual partitioning is completely fine. Adobe even with wine and GPU pass-through has far worse performance than if you just boot up windows. It is fine to combine any software you want. That’s the “free” in “free software.”

What are some things that can be done with blank dvds, nowadays?

So my family has a few containers of unused blank dvds that are just lying around collecting dust. i know dvds are almost useless because of streaming, but can they still be used. Theses dvds can only be written to once and they only have like 3 gb of storage on them, can they still be used?, do they have a use?

heartlessevil ,

You will need to double check the specific DVDs you are working with. They can be useful for backups and if you don’t store them in sunlight or acid or something they basically last forever. You can copy your important data onto a DVD and leave it in your closet for the rest of your life. Of course, as with all backup strategies, you need to test it very regularly.

Edited to add nitpicks: if you decide to do this back up across multiple DVDs and use encryption. Borg is a fantastic tool for encrypted backups and if you are just mounting your DVDs as cdrom0 and such it can handle that as easily as any other block device.

heartlessevil ,

Check them regularly and mirror them. They are basically only beaten by tape drives in terms of longevity. Do not under any circumstance use 1 copy of a DVD for backups. Consider this to be a RAID system. They stand the test of time but not the test of being in a moving box or under a hammer.

heartlessevil ,

Hypothetically yes. But consider that much like a virus growing in a petri dish, it needs an appropriate environment. A mp4/mkv/whatever file sitting on your hard drive that you never access is not going to be problematic. Even when you do access it, it is probably is not going to do anything unless you also open it in the viewer that the malware author intended the payload for. There is no general purpose video decoding malware. They target the players.

One day I just decided news didn’t exist and stopped reading any of it. Last I checked it was 1992 and they invented moon pies. What a time to be alive.

heartlessevil ,

This is true. I used a 1gb boot partition on my Nixos install and every time I update it I need to delete all the old kernels/initrd and sometimes I even delete the one that’s currently running.

heartlessevil ,

Yes. There was a famous marketing scandal called New Coke. Additionally, Coke in different countries has different ingredients. “Mexican Coke” is sought after in the states because it has cane sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup.

heartlessevil ,

You are not going to get far just by ignoring DMCA countries. You need to protect your anonymity entirely or you will simply be extradited to a DMCA country.

The most appropriate approach, like for any site, is probably to have a multi cloud setup across jurisdictions. Such as hetzner, Amazon, whatever. And you have orchestration to set them up and tear them down on a whim.

heartlessevil ,

That person sounds like a real psycho lmao. For one, a rifle isn’t even the best way to go about this. Completely bonkers.

I think even when I imagine the most evil people I can think of, the people who want me dead just because of my identity, I still wouldn’t want to kill anyone who isn’t actively, physically attacking me. And I learned self defense just for that! Luckily it hasn’t happened.

heartlessevil ,

at least he’s not getting anywhere with that kind of novice gun care

heartlessevil ,

I once had an open fracture. What was strange was that I was so hopped up on adrenaline, I didn’t even notice at first. The pain I’ve had from things like a calf cramp was way, way worse. In this case I called my own ambulance and they loaded me in and were like “uh. Does that hurt?” And I was like “Oh, does it hurt? Yeah, I guess it should, shouldn’t it?”

heartlessevil ,

I just raw dog that shit and hope for the best

heartlessevil ,

No it isn’t, you can’t even read any of it without an invite lol

heartlessevil ,

I am a lame child, but primarily, I don’t use things that require accounts/emails/ID verification just to read them. If I was gonna do that why wouldn’t I just use Twitter?

Edit: ignored that you still need to be invited to read anything, lol. This is like an extra-closed walled garden here. Hilarious that the worst thing about Twitter is all the blue check marks, and Bluesky is like “We have created a gated community of only blue checks.”

Good software for batch audio file conversion.

I’ve been using JDownloads2 to download from YouTube Music. But my car stereo only supports mp3 so have to convert the files. Any suggestion for good audio converter that works in large batches? I’ve looked, and maybe my google fu sucks, but can’t see a way to force JDownloads to do MP3, it’s doing m4a.

Nothing, or a ffmpeg frontend like handbrake

AI for identifying social norm violation (www.nature.com)

Prof. Yair Neuman and the engineer Yochai Cohen at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev have designed an AI system that identifies social norm violations. They trained a system to identify ten social emotions: competence, politeness, trust, discipline, caring, agreeableness, success, conformity, decency, and loyalty....

heartlessevil ,

Yeah this is complete GPT hype. I would like to never hear about GPT again just like we never hear about NFTs now.

I can’t even filter out GPT posts because people call them AI instead of LLM to sound cool :(

Renknowned con artist announces newest con. Wow I never saw this coming.

When you refer to the metadata are you taking about the audio file and it’s id3 tags? These are usually either served as is from the original uploaded file or normalized. But there is no guarantee they are the same as what’s in Soundcloud’s title, genre, etc.

heartlessevil ,

Then they are normalizing it by removing that data. You will need to use a script that is designed to capture the file and the meta at the same time. This means you need api or scraping instead of just pulling the file.

heartlessevil ,

The problem in this case is specifically that it is not trained on humans. The LLM hallucinates nonsense and then recursively reads its own nonsense from the internet in some kind of shit Ouroboro. This problem doesn’t seem solvable with LLM and contrasts it with AGI (artificial general intelligence - the thing LLMs claim to be.) Since the model needs more and more data to build more satisfying responses, it’s susceptible to injesting from other LLMs.

A LLM must ONLY be trained on humans because they don’t actually understand reasoning or linguistic structure. You end up with a “invisible green dragons sleep furiously” response very quickly. But the LLM also can’t tell if the text it’s injesting is from a human or LLM.

Additionally magnet links. The torrent files and magnet links (which are equivalent) need to have your user key in them not only to track your ratio but just to make sure you’re a member of the tracker.

In other contexts this kind of user tracking is called a session key and using someone else’s torrent file is called a replay attack or a session hijack.

heartlessevil ,

There is no reason that this should be possible on a private tracker. Public trackers, yes. Private ones need user authentication to let you download anything so it’s trivial to track the ratio at the same time.

heartlessevil ,

Is this a use case where you can use dotenv? (folder specific environment variables?)

If it’s not, aliases are the best you can do, or bash functions that are equivalent to them. The thing is that those only run in bash, so if you are expecting to run the commands outside of a shell, you will need to wrap them in bash -c or have a wrapper script.

This is just the broad strokes so if you have any questions please follow up.

how hard it is to join the platform

I seriously don’t belief the learned helplessness that makes it hard for people to join Mastodon or Lemmy. It’s literally one signup page. People have just completely lost any semblance of tech literacy.

heartlessevil ,

No, if you do that the police will federate to your house and arrest you

heartlessevil ,

Wow the internet really took a nosedive the last few months.

heartlessevil ,

X11 is deprecated, it’s been removed from RHEL, and hasn’t had dedicated maintainers for years. You might as well switch to Wayland (and xwayland if needed) now, it’s not really the case that you have an option.

heartlessevil ,

I imagine you’re talking about stability issues and not the numerous security flaws with X11 that are baked in to the protocol. Wayland is an improvement for many reasons, not just stability and the fact that it is actively developed unlike X11.
