And seeing as the Antarctic and Arctic are warming about 4x as fast as the rest of the world, I’d say we’re pretty close now.

Sea turtle nests break records on US beaches, but global warming threatens their survival (apnews.com)

Just as they have for millions of years, sea turtles by the thousands made their labored crawl from the ocean to U.S. beaches to lay their eggs over the past several months. This year, record nesting was found in Florida and elsewhere despite growing concern about threats from climate change....

girlfreddy ,

The problem is this …

In most species, sex is determined during fertilization. However, the sex of most turtles, alligators, and crocodiles is determined after fertilization. The temperature of the developing eggs is what decides whether the offspring will be male or female. This is called temperature-dependent sex determination, or TSD.

Research shows that if a turtle’s eggs incubate below 27.7° Celsius (81.86° Fahrenheit), the turtle hatchlings will be male. If the eggs incubate above 31° Celsius (88.8° Fahrenheit), however, the hatchlings will be female. Temperatures that fluctuate between the two extremes will produce a mix of male and female baby turtles.

Researchers have also noted that the warmer the sand, the higher the ratio of female turtles. As the Earth experiences climate change, increased temperatures could result in skewed and even lethal incubation conditions, which would impact turtle species and other reptiles.

"Super pigs" — called the "most invasive animal on the planet" — threaten to invade northern U.S. (www.cbsnews.com)

An exploding population of hard-to-eradicate “super pigs” in Canada is threatening to spill south of the border, and northern states like Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana are taking steps to stop the invasion....

Agreed. It throws a big wrench into selling locally-harvested wild boar meat tho.

girlfreddy ,

I don’t consider it cruel as long as the meat is used (except for the young ofc).

But it sounds like you know enough to teach others how to do it right.

One question … do you have abattoirs or butchers in your area where you take deer/elk/moose for butchering, cause they’d be a big help.

girlfreddy ,

Most of the people I know do the same, except all of the deer goes to jerky and sausage … cause the deer eat too much pine and spruce. lol

In September 2022, the Oglala Sioux and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes in South Dakota had to pay $500,000 to secure land around the site of the Battle of Wounded Knee, where more than 200 Native Americans were massacred by the US army in 1890. The family that owned the property sought close to $4m though it had been assessed at just $14,000.

Greedy, asshole move by the present landowners.

The Israeli army released video showing soldiers carrying boxes labelled “baby food” and “medical supplies”.

The IDF said in a briefing that soldiers found “weapons and other terror infrastructure,” at al-Shifa, and that they had seen “concrete evidence that Hamas terrorists used the Shifa hospital as a terror headquarters,” which they intended to publish later.

Omar Zaqout, who works in the emergency room at al-Shifa, told Al Jazeera that Israeli soldiers had detained and assaulted some men who had taken refuge there. “[They] did not bring any aid or supplies, they only brought terror and death,” he said.

The IDF is a manipulative org that lies through its teeth as often as possible. Publishing pics of supplies being delivered, which one eyewitness says is bullshit, then saying they’ve found evidence of Hamas occupation but they won’t publish that until later.

Fuck the IDF and fuck Netanyahu. They’re all lying bastards.

girlfreddy ,

The BBC agrees with you.

The evidence Israel has produced, so far, I do not believe to be convincing in terms of the kind of rhetoric Israelis were using about the set-up at the hospital, which suggested this was a nerve centre for the Hamas operation.

If there was a nerve centre there - and there has been speculation about that possibility since 2014 - then the Israelis have not yet revealed definitive evidence of its existence to the outside world.

What has been recovered includes some Kalashnikov rifles - these are common in the Middle East - a tunnel entrance, of which there are many in Gaza, some military uniforms and a booby-trapped vehicle.

The discovery of and evidence for a major Hamas headquarters underneath the hospital is of course still possible.

The hospital was, after all, built by the Israelis in the 1970s during its full control of the territory, and it is a large site which will take time to thoroughly search.

It’s well known that the Israeli architects who designed Al-Shifa included extensive basements.

Yes, because shit still happens. But many incidents can find their source in people not being well-educated in the dangers, ignoring standard warnings or procedures, and/or how to solve issues.

I’ve lived in remote areas and even locals have gotten into trouble, ie: using a logging road shortcut in a snow storm then dying by carbon monoxide poisoning, walking/driving on an ice road then drowning (because the ice isn’t thick enough).

Only around 10-12% of expanded polystyrene (EPS) is recycled across the US, and according to a Cleveland State University study, nearly 30% of US landfill space is taken up by EPS.

Makes you wonder where the other 58-60% of EPS ends up.

Well that’s a silly question to ask. Unless ofc you’re one of those Americans who think less of everyone else.

The rule of law says that America must provide emergency services to everyone on American soil. But you don’t like that rule, do you? So you pick and choose which rules to follow then, right?

You’re the one who stood up and said you love the rule of law. Now you want to qualify that cause you were caught in a lie.

Admit it. You don’t like all the rules. You just like the ones that help you.

Israel orders residents from southern Gaza towns, raising fear of war's spread (www.reuters.com)

girlfreddy OP ,

There is another way to see this, where the IDF moves Palestinians into a smaller and smaller area until 1 bomb would kill them all.

Genocide is as genocide does.

girlfreddy OP ,

But it is obvious at this point. And Netanyahu doesn’t gaf because he’s trying to prove he’s in control of the situation to make up for his failure to stop Oct 7 from happening.

(The IDF) released a video in which a soldier toured a hospital building, showing three bags with guns and flak jackets he said had been found stashed there, as well as several other rifles in a closet, and a laptop computer, but no tunnel complex. Officials said Hamas would have had time to clear out.

“Israel will have to come up with a lot more than a handful of ‘grab and go’ rifles to justify shutting down northern Gaza’s hospitals with its enormous cost for a civilian population with urgent medical needs,” Kenneth Roth, a former head of Human Rights Watch who now works as a visiting professor at Princeton, said on social media platform X.

girlfreddy OP ,

They’re not clearing the hospital. They’re interviewing every patient and medical personal and searching the hospital.

And if all they’ve found so far is 15 guns and a couple of flack jackets, that hardly justifies the level of violence they’ve aimed against an institution that is strictly there to save lives.
