Texas AG threatens to prosecute doctors in emergency abortion (www.reuters.com)

Paxton said in a letter that the order by District Court Judge Maya Guerra Gamble in Austin did not shield doctors from prosecution under all of Texas’s abortion laws, and that the woman, Kate Cox, had not shown she qualified for the medical exception to the state’s abortion ban....

A reminder …

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was recently acquitted by the state Senate on 16 articles of impeachment, but the state’s top lawyer still has multiple legal battles ahead.

Paxton has been under an ongoing federal investigation in Texas since the fall of 2020, when the FBI began to probe allegations of abuse of office and misconduct brought by a group of whistleblowing former employees.

Israel and US are at odds over conflicting visions for postwar Gaza (apnews.com)

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, this week announced that Israel would retain an open-ended security presence in Gaza. Israeli officials talk of imposing a buffer zone to keep Palestinians away from the Israeli border. They rule out any role for the Palestinian Authority, which was ousted from Gaza by Hamas in 2007...

The insatiable need for power and wealth has warped these people beyond understanding.

Morality isn’t a term they personally understand, instead preferring to force/enforce a sick version of it on everyone else.

I hope they face every possible consequence of their actions, including poverty and jail.

Tech legal expert Eric Goldman wrote that a victory for the plaintiff could be considered “a dangerous ruling for the spy cam industry and for Amazon,” because “the court’s analysis could indicate that all surreptitious hook cameras are categorically illegal to sell.” That could prevent completely legal uses of cameras designed to look like clothes hooks, Goldman wrote, such as hypothetical in-home surveillance uses.

In what reality is there any need for a door-hook camera except to spy on someone who has not given consent???

Jayzuz. That was some poor mind gymnastics right there.

girlfreddy ,

Watching the babysitter if you think she’s abusing your kids. In the bathroom? Cause that’s where towel hooks are.

Monitoring your office if you’re a politician afraid of poisoning. See above

girlfreddy ,

Ontario’s Health Care Consent Act has been on the books for nearly two decades. Like similar laws in many Canadian provinces—and American states—it sets out the process for making treatment decisions when a patient cannot provide or withhold her consent—when she is in a coma and on life support, for example.

America has them too. The above is from the same Slate article you linked.

Maybe don’t just pick and choose portions of an article that match your confirmation bias.

Found out why …

DA José Garza, who had never been a DA before, was elected in Jan 2021 promising to “end the over-prosecution of the poor and people of color”. Three weeks later the first of many indictments/prosecutions against cops began, and he decided against giving the chief a head’s up call. Shit hit the fan and the chief retired.

But the feud between the cops, the DA and his staff had begun. 19 prosecutors resigned and Garza has fired a few more.

But the biggest reason may be that he will soon start his re-election campaign and without the cop vote he won’t win.

I think it’s mandatory that every tourist horror story has to include at least one American anecdote.

From the last paragraph …

In 2022, an American tourist sustained minor injuries after he fell into the crater of Mount Vesuvius as he tried to retrieve his phone, which had slipped out of his hand while taking a selfie.

Apps use push notifications to buzz users’ phones or tablets with updates on new messages or alerts. When a user enables push notifications, Apple and Google create a small bit of data, known as a token, that links their device to the account information they’ve given the companies, such as name and email address.

In his letter, Wyden said the federal government had started demanding records on those tokens from Apple and Google because those companies operate as a “digital post office” for relaying the notifications. The tokens could reveal details about who a person is communicating with over a messaging or gaming app, what times they talk and, in some cases, the text of any message displayed in the notification.

Depending on how users have set up their push notifications, the token data could also potentially expose limited information about anyone who had exchanged emails, texts or social media messages with someone that federal investigators have pursued.

Never use push notifications people.

I abhor when individuals, who should know fucking better, start pulling shit like this.

If he has proof, show it. But don’t use fear-mongering or start pulling at America’s heart strings to justify monitoring America.

Yeah, I did. Which is why I said this … “justify monitoring America.”

However, Americans’ data may get picked up as part of incidental collection. That means that if an American is communicating with a foreign target, those communications could be collected. In addition, if federal authorities are already investigating a US person, they may cross-check that person’s information against the 702 database.
