I immediately thought about ChatGPT or some other AI assistant with GPT in its name as an alternative to Copilot, lol.

ginerel , (edited ) to asklemmy in Who's winning the war in Ukraine?
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

I tend to think as well that the situation in Ukraine is currently a stalemate. The fact is that, while Russia is losing weapons, Ukraine is gaining them. There's also a different quality of life for Western weapons compared to the Russian ones because, well, that's something that the West actually cared for back in the Cold War days. USSR and its satellites only cared about meeting the 5-year quota, or whatever they cared for in order to show the West they were more industrialized and whatnot. Western weapons are also more accurate and tends to integrate more hi-tech inside, so that you can use them for one-strike-one-kill instead of carpet bombing large swaths of land until nothing moves there. This is why, e.g. you have Grad systems with around 42 projectiles or so, all usually being fired in chain, while on HIMARS you only have a maximum of 6 projectiles, which are usually fired individually.

All this now proves vital for Ukraine, as it has to fight a country with a larger manpower, a larger (pre-war at least) stock of vehicles and a larger stock of ammunition. Ukraine, however, did not manage to become a powerful force on the counter-offensive. It does a great job at hardening Russian attacks, causing incredible amounts of damage for every inch of land lost, but the required weaponry for a successful breakthrough has been in short supply. Besides that, what Ukraine initially planned to do was to do a combined arms attack. And you cannot do this without a good amount of air support - which Ukraine was and is currently lacking.

IMO, it remains to be seen what will happen when Ukraine will finally start to operate F-16 jets (among other equipment it started to build in-house like drones), but as of now, on the equipment and fighting side, Ukraine is currently winning. On the loss side, while Russia loses more people and equipment than Ukraine, I'm afraid the numbers are proportionally the same for both sides. This is why I see it as heading to a stalemate in the foreseeable future. But Russia can no longer win what it initially planned, it is constantly changing the objectives in order to show the world that it achieved something, and Ukraine simply cannot lose. Russia's only advantage right now is being on the offensive itself.

ginerel , to fediverse in Which of the Fediverse projects are worth getting into?
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

This might be subjective, but imo, while Mastodon has the most feature complete apps, it's not the most feature complete platform out there. Hell, even Kbin is more feature complete than Mastodon. I recommend trying Friendica, Hubzilla or Streams for a larger feature set.

ginerel , to world in NATO member Romania pushes to buy 54 Abrams battle tanks from US
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

I agree with the logistics part, as they'd need to build and maintain additional facilities but

Abrams aren’t built for Romania’s terrain.

What do you mean by that? Why would they be incompatible with our terrain? Indeed, they'll most likely never be used in the Carpathians, as you'd need more compact and mobile vehicles to go through there. But given our current threat vector - which comes from the East, so basically only Moldovan low-rise hills, Dobrudja and the Romanian Plains where Bucharest is located being the parts under threat - why would they be not fit for that type of terrain?

You can also use Friendica if you enjoy Tumblr. It has a wider degree of customization in regard to its interface, and you can also cross post or get your Tumblr feed in Friendica (provided the server you're using has the appropriate tumblr addon).

ginerel , to piracy in FileList.io shutting down by the end of the year :( UPDATE: not anymore :)
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

This was a Romanian tracker, and it was pretty much the most popular one (or at least that I know of), so I am pretty sure there was a lot of local content as well. Movies also always had Romanian subtitles IIRC, so it was a great source for anyone not having a really good English comprehension to fiddle around.

There surely are other trackers as well that I'm not aware of or there's Romanian content on other international ones, but the community there was quite impressive - you always knew you could source some good quality stuff.

For me, personally, FL was pretty much my go-to whenever I wanted to get something that I couldn't source for free.

ginerel OP , to news in Transgaz Romania takes over all Gazprom operations in the Republic of Moldova, including Transdniestria
@ginerel@kbin.social avatar

From my understanding, they were already in debt to Moldova (not sure if I understood correctly).

For Moldova, however, this means that it eliminated a source for blackmailing from Russia. Despite also being state-owned, Transgaz and Romania don't have a history of manipulating prices and cutting gas at will, just because of geopolitical interests and national politics of their clients.

Pretty much any game made by Valve. I have a bunch of friends that are really fans of them and I gradually started enjoying them as well.
