I was well into adulthood when I finally figured out why no bath towel ever seems absorbent enough.

  1. I'm ; so, any moisturev at all on my skin greatly bothers me.

  2. Skin soaks up water like a sponge. Even if you remove all the surface moisture, some water absorbed by the skin still makes its way back out to the surface.

  3. Most bath towels truly are awful regardless.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic I have a towelling bathrobe made of non plushie towe fabric. I put it on after the shower and it dries me excellently without the need for rubbing. All I really need to run is my shins and feet and I'm done. It also solves my problem of being cold when I dry myself with other types of towel

@ashleyspencer @servelan @hosford42 @actuallyautistic @neurodivergence if it was a single gene I'm sure it would have been identified already, but I'm assuming it's a cluster of genes. Perhaps identifying the cause would help provide a conclusive and rapid test.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic ham roll. i had it for lunch every day for a couple of years even when we were bought free lunch (inc. hot food) by our company every day. it was all i could manage at the time. other safe foods are ones which don't give me digestive issues. i always have mints on me too, they settle my nerves and any sickness/anxiety feelings

What does Autistic Masking/Camoflaging mean to YOU?

Not what the definition is. Not what people on social media say. We say that all humans are different. Masking fits into that too.

Some of us can’t mask btw.

What is it to YOU?

@theautisticcoach it means applying a filter to thoughts going in and out of my brain. this morning i got into an argument with my spouse because they started a conversation about politics while i was still waking up in bed and i hadn't applied my filter yet. i was told that apparently i was very rude and offensive to ask for more context/detail and why is it so hard to have a normal conversation etc @actuallyautistic

People think I'm intolerant to smells (because they are only mildly irritated by them, or don't notice them at all) but I suspect my sensitivity to smell is dialled up to the max

If I am downwind of someone smoking a cigarette outside, I can detect it over 100yds away. "How can you smell it from that far away?" They say skeptically. Well, I just can. And it still offends my nostrils at that distance.

Some particular smells really provoke a strong reaction (like get it away from me Now)

I suspect I have a stronger than usual reaction to the obvious stuff that NT people also don't like (body odour, bad breath, public toilets, rotten food, bin juice, poo) but I also have a particular aversion to the smell of cigarettes, cannabis, and a particular Hugo boss aftershave (if someone is wearing this on a packed train full of smells, my brain isolates it and tells me).

Other smells turn my stomach in the morning in particular, as the "wrong smell for the time of day". Walking past a fish market, or if someone starts eating a sandwich on the train at 9am, it nauseates me more than if they did it at 1pm.

Does this happen to you:
I often have trouble focusing while my hearing fades in and out at about 1 second intervals. It's like there's some muscle or something pulsing behind my ears at the back of my nasal cavity.
I used to think it was an anxiety thing, before it was diagnosed with autism (but after I was dx GAD and CPTSD). But I have never heard of a similar experience in anyone else.

@markusl just a heads-up, an autism diagnosis on the NHS is more than a 3 year wait (and increasing). So you might want to think about what a future version of yourself might want.

In June 2023, there were 10,910 new referrals to NHS autism diagnostic services, while only 645 people received an autism diagnosis.

@markusl i've been waiting just over 1yr so far. if anything, getting a diagnosis will be a helpful validation for my spouse. i don't intend to disclose any potential diagnosis widely, so my only concerns would be a NHS data breach or NHS giving my info to palantir or some other evil company @Finch @EternalOutsider @eo @actuallyautistic
