Don’t forget: *.xyz domains can be taken away from you without warning. The registry did this before. Might want to switch.

earmuff ,
earmuff ,

Well, the tl;dr is: if your domain gets reported, it might get removed without further investigation. Not something that would let me sleep calmly. Then again, I‘m now curious what happens if I report a domain.

Never buy .xyz

I just wanted to post this here because I want to help you all and hurt gen.xyz as much as possible. I had a .xyz domain through njal.la which I used to host jellyfin, homeassistant, and other basic things for friends and family. My domain recently became inaccessible without any notice. After a while of troubleshooting, I found...

earmuff ,

Also, don‘t use it for any mail servers. Spam Assassin gives a negative score by default on *.xyz domains. Stupid as shit, but I had to learn the hard way.

earmuff ,

Agree. I just got it for fun and because it was cheap. I used it for my disposable e-mail addresses but now switched to .org

earmuff ,

H2 is not yet water.

earmuff ,

So there is the thing in the Bio Hacking community, where they recommend H2 infused water, which should have some benefit on your health. I once saw a water filter station, which was generating H2 in the watertank, so you were drinking H2 infused water. Not sure if there is any science behind it to back this.

Basic docker networking?

Hi guys! I’m going at my first docker attempt…and I’m going in Proxmox. I created an LXC container, from which I installed docker, and portainer. Portainer seems happy to work, and shows its admin page on port 9443 correctly. I tried next running the image of immich, following the steps detailed in their own guide....

earmuff ,

Add a new VM, install docker-ce on it and slowly migrate all the other containers/vm‘s to docker. End result is way less overhead, way less complexity and way better sleep.

earmuff ,

I was assuming you were able to get rid of the other 5 VM‘s by doing so. If not, obviously you would have not less overhead.

earmuff ,

My HA is running in docker. It is easier than you might think. Forget about LXC. And just take your time migrating the stuff and only when the service works in docker, you can shut off the VM. Believe me, management of docker is way easier than 5 VM‘s with different OS‘s. Docker Compose is beautiful and easy.

If you need help, just message me, I might be able to give you a kickstart

earmuff ,

Not just a day, a full month the backdoor was available. On the Arch Repo, v5.6.0 was uploaded on February 24th. Will be similar to other repos.

earmuff ,

It actually means a lot for average people. Only because you are not able to comprehend some things, does not mean you are not affected by it. But feel free to keep on using Windows XP.

earmuff OP ,

Technically yes, but I don‘t have the nerve and time to manage it properly and I wouldn’t want to host a mediocre service. Also legal stuff etc is making many things complicated.

earmuff OP ,

Thanks for the hint. Have been out of the game for 15 years and kinda lost all my contacts, since I was mainly using usenet the past few years

earmuff OP ,

I have no idea what you smoked, but 25Gbps (Gigabits per second) is 3.125GBps (Gigabytes per second)

earmuff OP ,

Not everyone is able to afford subscriptions of indexers and hosters. I just would like to contribute to the community with what I have.

earmuff OP , (edited )

In Switzerland, the ISP Init7 is offering all their connections for CHF 777.- (USD 861.-) per year and you just get the maximum speed, which is currently 25/25Gbps. This provider is well known for fighting for net neutrality and being against any censorships or mass surveillance. I just love them very much and wish that other countries would have such awesome ISP‘s as well.

earmuff OP ,

Very true. Currently I‘m only at about 45TB of space, but could extend it fairly easily to 198TB or more.

earmuff OP ,

Oh I‘m not inexperienced in that area, so I absolutely know what you mean. I just kind of lost the connection to that scene.

earmuff OP ,

Sorry, forgot to mention the period. It is per year.

earmuff OP ,

Yeah, I will keep on using usenet and just would use torrent as a supplement or additional source. Mainly only interested in movies/shows and games. But to be honest, I don‘t mind seeding other stuff for a couple of weeks, but will eventually have to delete it to save some space for the things I really want.

Maybe there are some screenshots on some old IDE drives or chatlogs of IRC, but I‘d have to invest a lot of time with low chances of finding something useful. So please, don’t trust me blindly. I know that trust has to be built first and that private communities can be fragile at times. So your questions are very valid and relatable :)

earmuff OP ,

Yep, I know, that‘s why I was looking for people who are the owners of the trackers and just need someone with decent bandwidth. Other than that it is just a game of patience.

earmuff OP ,

Thanks for this very helpful response. The way you describe it makes absolutely sense and I will use this as a guide in the future.

earmuff OP ,

I just checked and only for the cheaper subscription they use CGNAT. So I will not be affected by it.

earmuff OP ,

Glad to hear that bandwidth is no issue anymore. Then I use my bandwidth for something else :)

earmuff OP ,

I had to start somewhere, I think everyone is able to understand that. I was not even asking for specific invites, just in general. Maybe there is someone trying to run a new private tracker and is in need of seeding power. Without asking, I would never know.

earmuff OP ,

Thanks for the heads up. I am well aware of this. Obviously I would try not to get too much attention and would probably block all Swiss clients from accessing my server. Having legal issues internationally at that scale without any money involved is unlikely. But that‘s just my hypothesis.

Edit: only because I‘m a pirate does not mean I have no moral values. I would never want to distribute heavily illegal content. Only copyrighted content.

earmuff OP ,

Don‘t forget that the copyright law is a civil law, so there needs to be someone being able to proof to have suffered from any damages. Having a law case within a border is usually much cheaper to having one internationally, because every country has a different law system and you need a lot more lawyers, just to then find out there was no damage. So the risk of paying a lot of law fees without getting any damages covered is just too high. Obviously, it makes sense that big studios will try to hunt down big trackers, but I think even with my 25/25Gbit I am far away of being an interesting target, especially on an international level. At least this is how my view on this is.

I figured out how to make IPTV as easy as using Netflix so you dont have to (lemmy.myserv.one)

Disclaimer: Obviously this is for educational purposes only. I would personally never use my internet connection for anything illegal at all. I simply tested the below setup then deleted everything out of pure interest to understand how things worked and do not use any IPTV service. I love paying Netflix and other streaming...

earmuff ,

First of all, thanks for the effort you put into this guide, this is super helpful for a lot of people.

What do you mean by „This gives (…) Netflix (…)“? With IPTV you just get an MPEG stream. But with Netflix you want to select the media you want to watch. So how would that work?

earmuff ,

IPTV - I use a UK centric provider that costs £30 GBP every 3 months (Equivalent to 10 GBP a month). This gives live TV (sky), Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and a few other bits and bobs in this price. You also get a backup stream so if the primary goes down you can still use your IPTV.

  1. what provider are you talking about here?
  2. your setup only focuses on streaming IPTV, right?
earmuff ,

Then I‘m still curious what kind of provider you are talking about, because I simply don’t understand it. Could you maybe send me a pm with the name of it?

earmuff ,

Lemmy users be like „I fucking love decentralized freedom“, until someone joins they don’t like.

earmuff ,

I understand both sides. Busy people love to save their game at any point in time, as they might get interrupted. But I also understand the point from the devs and I also like it sometimes when I cannot save constantly. Obviously both sides could now be less stubborn. Busy people can just pause the game and resume later to just exit the junction and the devs could implement a quick save feature.

Dear game designers, how about you let the user decide what they like most, a very easy or hard game? Usually with difficulty settings, only damage/health numbers get modified. But you could also enable quick save in easy mode, and disable it in hard mode. Take a look at the difficulty settings of Grounded. Easy to implement and you automatically reach a bigger user base. And while we are at it, busy people sometimes cannot play games for a longer time, let’s say 4 weeks. After 4 weeks I have forgotten all the controls and game mechanics again. TV shows play a recap if a new season comes out. You should do the same. A super short introduction of what happened story wise and how the controls and game mechanics are working.

earmuff ,

I still don’t understand the need of putting so much time and energy into DE . I have been using KDE for ages and if I don‘t like the looks of it, I change them. Other than that, 99% of my daily use of a linux is independent of any DE. I actually don’t even care what DE it is. Just give me a Terminal Emulator and a graphical desktop to run software.

earmuff ,

You are right, but in the end there are so many good choices already. Reminds me of this: xkcd

earmuff ,

Oh, usually I‘m very sensitive with things like that, but have not noticed any lags/stutters and I‘m someone who immediately sees when the screen is below 120Hz. I use Garuda on my gaming pc and Debian Sid on my old Acer notebook, both with Nvidia GPU‘s. Hopefully they will release a fix soon. Did you already try nouveau? Or KDE 6?

earmuff ,

I‘m the author of this one and currently it is kind of a mess. Focus was on downloading stuff via usenet and torrent and now many home automation tools came along:

github.com/kylhuk/Download-Box

earmuff ,

The problem is that there are still features missing from certain browsers. For example, Mozilla does not like restrictive licenses, which is why many media codecs are not available in Firefox. Google does not care, pays the fees and provides the media codecs for free. As soon as we get rid of shit like h265 and switch to av1, the world will be a better (and more open) place where everyone can use any browser.

earmuff ,

That‘s the problem. If you show a damaged or non working website, the user assumes it is a problem of the website, then thinking negatively about it. Unfortunately the world is not as easy as you see it :)

earmuff ,

Kinda agree, but from a software developer perspective, there is no reason to maintain multiple code bases or exceptions just because 2% of the users might profit from it. The same thing happened in the past, when everyone had to have special CSS exceptions for IE6. But in that case it was worth it, as the marked share of IE6 was huge.

Last I checked there was no (end) in wife and husband

Since I‘m only listen to music on Apple Music, I use Cider.

bad battery? (lemmy.world)

I opened my laptop for unrelated reasons and was greeted by a slightly bloated battery. Idk if the picture makes it clear, but the individual segments of the battery have slightly raised above the solid structure pieces in between. Laptop is just over a year old. I have already contacted the manufacturer, but with the holidays...

earmuff ,

Every bloated battery can start igniting any second. So please remove it and store it somewhere outside, ideally on concrete. Li-Ion fires cannot be stopped, not even with water.

Source: I‘m a firefighter.

earmuff ,

The battery will most likely not explode, but just ignite. The melting of the chemicals and metals just gets really really hot, so anything else around it will start to burn eventually. So don’t treat it like a bomb, more like a very hot iron. If you can, find a temporary spot for the battery. Maybe in a garage or basement. If also possible, use a metal container. Dirt/sand is also a good option.

earmuff ,

What you are describing is just dangerous, for the simple fact that people then think they are safe, as soon as they put the battery into salt water. You even say yourself that it takes days until fully drained. During those days, the battery could still ignite. When that happens, the salt water will not help at all. What then will happen is, that the water will immediately turn into steam. You know what happens if you put water into hot oil - similar effect, just less dangerous. The water will be gone in no time and everything around it starts to burn.

That‘s why we always recommend what I was suggesting in my initial comment. And please don‘t say things like „it is the only fully safe way“. This is just straight up wrong.

earmuff ,

I actually had to check some resources myself, as I was unsure if it was really useful in that case. Those blankets usually help stopping a fire by limiting the amount of oxygen that gets to it - without oxygen, no fire. Unfortunately, many batteries have oxygen in them, not much, but enough to keep it going. So the fire won’t stop in that case. But what the fire blanket does, is give a layer of insulation, thus reducing sparks flying around and reducing the temperature directly above it.

Fire blankets are always a very useful tool, as they are easy to use and at least protect the person holding it (in small fires, obviously). If it doesn’t help, it does not make it any worse.
