Unless you’re happy with a very mediocre phone - please don’t. I very much applaud the idea behind fairphone, but the years I had my fairphone 3 were full of frustration.

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Low end hardware made the user experience frustrating and the overall performance was poor. It’s annoying because the concept is good, but a phone that’s supposed to be your “long term phone” shouldn’t be painful to use after only months. It’s certainly very repairable - or seemed to be. I didn’t actually have to ever repair mine, but if I’m going to deliberately have a phone for a long time then I need it to stay off with specs that mean it’ll still perform after three or four years.

I answered above replying to another post.

The hardware being very poor was the killer for me. Unless they improve starter specs or allow you to upgrade hardware I won’t ever buy another one.

As a native English speaker who’d never heard of this word - TIL x2

I realised after posting that it’s actually the rp3+, but I love it. It’s really versatile in terms of gaming and will play lots of games.

There is a middle ground, though and it’s called leasing. It’s what we get most of the time when we “buy” digital content. They call it buying, but leasing describes it more accurately.

Edit: not saying I like it - I don’t, just making an observation.

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

That is absolutely not how all leases work…

It’s what I use for a stable and immutable system

While I don’t believe there is any way to cook broccoli that will make it taste good, I think this approach has the best chance. The problem, however, is that the oil and salt rather defeat the health benefits of eating the vegetables in the first place…

Screwtape letters is excellent, but hardly an authoritative resource on demons. Nor was it intended to be.

I believe there are some vegans who won’t eat figs because they absorb the body of a certain type of wasp. I forget the details, but the point is - it probably depends on the vegan

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Is that not also true of the fly trap?

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

I would love this - except that my wife and I would want completely different ambient temperatures and I don’t want to sleep in a different pod from her.

I really want an e-ink tablet that is good for both sheet music and has excellent ebook support. Including Kindle formats. I’m not holding my breath.

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Given that the PadMu is (as far as I can tell) a tweaked Onyx - I’m not clear what the difference actually is? Onyx can do sheet music can’t it?

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

I’d love to get ferrets, but I expect if get an allergic reaction when they moult.

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Remarkable would be awesome if I could read my Kindle books on it. It seems to me that most e-ink tablets are good at either taking notes or ebooks, but none are really good at both…

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

I think they want a pocket TARDIS…

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

If the main difference is the dual screen thing then it’s not much use for me. My main use case with sheet music is writing it, not reading for performance - so I’d actually prefer to work on just one screen at a time.

Based on about 20 minutes of searching last night - it seems to lack support for debugging outside of gdb.

That’s quite a major thing to not have if you’re going to claim support for lots of languages…

Karen Carpenter - mainly because she was such a talented musician and her death so tragic.

This question shows a fundamental misunderstanding. Before the establishment of the modern Israeli state, most of the Arabs living in the region were actually of Egyptian or Jordanian descent. There was no Palestinian people group until after that so as to identify the displaced Arabs as one group.

Jewish people, however, have lived in and been associated with the land for thousands of years. Palestinians are categorically not the same as native Americans.

There must be a separate, sovereign Palestinian state - because that would be most just and fair. There must also, however, be a sovereign Israeli state because of the historical ties to the land and the fact that for millennia the Jewish people have been persecuted wherever they go. I honestly don’t know why, but they have.

@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for the clarification. I think it’s still fair to say that the original question is simply wrong/misleading. Palestinians are not equivalent to native americans - or, if they are, so are Jews.

daddyjones OP ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks - yes I do have that, but I also wanted something specific to my dotfiles to make management and restoration a bit easier.

daddyjones OP ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Interesting - can I ask why you prefer home-manager to stow?

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Desktop per monitor.

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah - this is what I meant. One virtual desktop per physical monitor.

I used to have it on a forked version of Openbox, but then I lost the binary and it doesn’t compile anymore. If just makes much more sense to me and makes window management just a little easier. Especially when apps get confused about which monitor they’re supposed to start on or try to be on both in an unhelpful way.

How do you feel about financing a genocide?

I didn’t want to direct this question to Americans specifically because, at this point, other countries have shown support to Israel in one or the other way. If my country was financing this, I would be taking the streets. Shit, I’m right now in the hospital but all I can think about is protesting anyway just to feel I did...

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure I think Israel is engaged in genocide - although I’m deeply unhappy with some of their military approaches.

Hamas, on the other hand, is unashamedly aiming at genocide. Their started aim is the death of all Jews and they are frequently heard chanting “from the river to the sea”.

daddyjones OP ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for the reply. You’re right about the pressure bomb thing, which is one of the reasons I’m keen to get some feedback here.

daddyjones OP ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify - you use the safety valve to tell you when it’s ready? I’m assuming without the steam valve open at a ll since, I imagine, that would stop it getting fully up to pressure?

Is that (using the safety valve) consistently accurate? Safe?

I’ve heard other people saying this is how they do it and it seems to make sense and be the easiest approach, but I’ve also seen retailers saying to really not do this - although that might just be to cover themselves legally.

I moved from Gentoo to Arch years ago and was unable to notice any performance difference. There may have been one, but it wasn’t perceptible to me.

You think a co-op only has a tiny amount of democracy? I think it’s the best form of workers owning the means of production - the definition of socialism.

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Ah - I misunderstood. My mistake.

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

As pointed out above “Christ” is a title, not his name. His dad wasn’t called Joseph Christ.

daddyjones ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

This is a relief for me. I’m out of beans and would’ve felt bummed not having coffee on international coffee day, but it didn’t matter that I missed it without knowing - if that makes sense?

daddyjones OP ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for the reply! With my youngest, at least, I’d be quite concerned about the mess he’d make with one of those!

daddyjones OP ,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve tried that with reasonable results, but the plunging action is simply too exhausting for me to do often or regularly.

daddyjones ,

Poor documentation combined with the step learning curve is quite a problem imho.

    Atheists, is there anything religious that sticks with you to this day?

    I am Ganesh, an Indian atheist and I don’t eat beef. It’s not like that I have a religious reason to do that, but after all those years seeing cows as peaceful animals and playing and growing up with them in a village, I doubt if I ever will be able to eat beef. I wasn’t raised very religious, I didn’t go to temple...

    It is close (pretty sure it’s 22nd), but I’m not sure there’s evidence that co-opting a pagan festival is what happened. It is a common assertion though.

    As we know it, to be killed painlessly, is to be killed instantly

    This is not necessarily true. There are ways to fall asleep and never wake up. Not instant, but painless.
