What are some RPGs for someone who doesnt like most RPGs

Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into RPGs lately and wanted to share my thoughts and seek recommendations from fellow gamers. I’ve found myself resonating with Scott the Woz’s viewpoint on random encounters and grinding, but I do make an exception when the combat system is truly exceptional, like in the case of...

  • Chrono Trigger
  • Octopath Traveller
  • Final Fantasy VI
d3Xt3r ,

Is it worth it playing though? Asking as someone who played all the originals upto San Andreas, when I first checked out IV, it just felt like more of the same and I lost interest.

d3Xt3r ,

Make sure you’ve enabled PEX, DHT etc, also update your tracker list using the lists here: github.com/ngosang/trackerslist

d3Xt3r ,

You’d see that a lot on Reddit, on subs like r/pcmr or r/gaming. But not much of that here, presumably because Lemmy has a higher ratio of FOSS-friendly folks.

d3Xt3r ,

For me, it’s this one:

Keep pop-up windows open – Instead of minimizing pop-up windows when you go to the Recents screen, pop-ups will now remain open after you leave the Recents screen so you can continue what you were working on.

As a heavy multitasker (on a Fold), it was annoying having the popup windows automatically minimize. Glad they fixed it now.

d3Xt3r ,

You don’t need a Samsung account at all to use any of the addition features.

Some of the useful features off the top of my head:

  • Long-press power button for torch (customisable)
  • Edge panel, which allows quick launching of apps and shortcuts
  • Ability to directly record the screen, or a portion of a screen, as a GIF
  • Video out over USB-C, and DeX mode which provides a desktop-like experience (although I believe Google will be finally introducing video out with Pixel 8)
  • Various multitasking enhancements such as: open any app in a popup window, change its transparency levels, enable no-pause multitasking so your split-window/popup apps continue running even if they’re not in focus.

I used to click on ads back in the day when you’d get paid for it (I was a poor school student, don’t judge. :p).

Can anyone recommend me a setup to virtualize Linux under Windows that runs smoothly?

I by now have wasted far too much time trying to setup a VM on my decently decked out machine (i5 13600KF, RTX 3080, 32GB DDR5, Win11 on a 4K Display) to run some kind of Linux in there that runs perfectly smooth - mostly for Development purposes....

d3Xt3r ,

I respectfully disagree, as someone who’s tried both WSL1 and 2, I’d avoid it. Not only does it not replace the experience of a proper Linux install, you run into weird issues or quirks that’s caused by WSL, which is the last thing that someone new to Linux and trying to code at the same time, would want to experience. In my case, I had an issue with my Arch WSL2 install where the network would stop working for some weird reason. Tried a bunch of things, nothing worked, in the end I gave up on it because I wasted too much time on it, when I could’ve just used Hyper-V instead - which I did, and had no issues (which was also weird, considering WSL2 uses Hyper-V in the backend). Then the other weird issue was trying to clean up my broken WSL2 install - no matter what I did, I couldn’t get my Arch install out of the wsl --list --alllist - even though it didn’t actually exist anywhere.

And in case you ask, yes I did try other distros too, had the same issue with the network.

The whole experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth, like it was some unfinished beta product.

I still try and stick to the 8.3 convention as far as possible. I don’t like LFNs.

Blocked by Cloudflare (jrhawley.ca)

The author was blocked from accessing a work website due to issues with Cloudflare’s browser integrity checks. Despite having credentials to prove his identity, an attempt to bypass the checks by disabling fingerprinting in Firefox resulted in Cloudflare blocking all access. He could still access the site on Chrome, showing...

d3Xt3r ,

I can’t speak for the author but I’ve experienced this issue a few times, with increasing frequency of late, on Firefox and even other apps (not Chrome). Especially if I’m browsing under private mode (which I often am, just because I don’t like any cookies/cache to be saved for random sites). Now, it’s not like it’s some random site who’s Javascript broke or something, perfectly functioning sites would stop working and display that CloudFlare access denied message, when they previously worked just fine.

The other app I’d experience issues with is Tachiyomi, a manga reader and scraper. Whilst it works fine for the most part, every once in a while I’d get blocked by CloudFlare, which prevents Tachiyomi from searching/accessing various manga sites. But if I access the said site via Chrome, it’d work just fine.

It’s not just CloudFlare. Sometimes, when again browsing via Firefox’s private mode and say I needed to run a Google search, Google sometimes throws a captcha at me because it finds my activities “suspicious”.

Just so you know, there’s nothing unusual about my internet setup - I’m just a standard home user, with a static-ish IP from a well known ISP. My public IP has been the same for over an year now, and I don’t run any web/mail servers or anything that my ISP or a website would dislike.

What it is, is just plain discrimination. Just because I have my privacy filters up and blocking all tracking and crap, it’s seeing me as suspicious. If this sort of stuff is going to be the norm, I can only imagine how much more bleak our future would be if Google’s WEI went into effect.

USB-C confirmed for the iPhone 15 in new leaked images - Macworld (www.macworld.com)

We’ve known that the iPhone is switching to USB-C for a while now, but there was always a possibility that Apple would stick with Lightning for one more year. Based on the latest leaked images, however, Apple is all-in on USB-C for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, with USB-C parts for the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and...

Probably KWGT or KLWP - Kustom Widgets / Kustom Live Wallpaper. You could use any launcher as a base, but completely change the look of your homescreen using either of them.

Can’t remember last time they released new android version on a flagship without breaking either performance or battery life

That’s actually quite normal for most in-place OS upgrades, and isn’t specific to Samsung or even Android.

As an old PC nerd, the rule-of-thumb still stands true today: always do a fresh install when doing a major OS upgrade, it’ll save you from much agony down the line.

d3Xt3r ,

I’ve always been a Stock Android fanboy, so I loved the Pixel phones. However, for reasons, I got myself a Galaxy Fold 4 last year, which I fell in love with. I can’t see myself going back to a regular phone now, and for me to get a Pixel Fold, Google would really have to improve Android’s multitasking capabilities. On my Galaxy Fold for instance, I can have three tiled windows in a split-screen layout, or can have several floating windows of regular apps, which can be minimized into floating chatheads. With these floating windows, I can freely resize them, hide the header and even change their transparency levels. Which is great if you want to keep an eye out on some chat or Uber Eats or something whilst you are reading a book in full-screen. Having gotten used to these multitasking features, I can’t see myself going back to stock Android, until these are implemented.

End of an era: Zoom tells employees to return to office for work (nypost.com)

End of an era: Zoom tells employees to return to office for work::Zoom is asking all of its employees to return to the office for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, when the tech company blew up as one of the main means of communication when people were forced to work from home.

d3Xt3r ,

Clickbaity article

Zoom […] is now asking all employees within 50 miles of a company office to go in at least two days a week on a hybrid schedule.

So it’s not “all of it’s employees”. Plus, it’s a hybrid schedule, which, for better or worse, has now become a standard across most organisations around the world.

Nice, another OMF and Jazz fan!

It’s a pity OMF is so underrated. Whenever someone claims they’re a fan of fighting games, and I ask them which games they’ve played, not a single one of them has replied with “OMF” so far. :(

OMF also got me more into understanding PC networking. I made my own null modem cable once (by splicing up a spare RS232 cable), connected my friends PC to it and we played OMF against each other, on our own PCs! No more having to share our keyboard! (gosh, I nearly forgot that shared keyboard multiplayer was a thing…) Those were exciting times.

  • Dangerous Dave, John Romero’s first “popular” game, predating Keen/Wolf/Doom. Three decades later, and I still haven’t managed to beat this game (without using cheats or save states that is).

https://nesninja.com/public/images/dos/found/dangerous-dave-dave.gif

  • Bio Menace, An action platformer by Apogee, made using the same engine as Keen. You are Snake Logan, a CIA operative who needs to save Metro City, which has been invaded by mutants. A very fun game with good controls and smooth movements.

  • The Skunny series, A bunch of platformers featuring Skunny the squirrel, made by Copysoft. Save our Pizzas in particular was pretty memorable, where Skunny travels back in time to ancient Rome because an evil chef wants to destroy the invention of pizza so that he can make his own imitation. Very whacky and cartoony, kid me loved this game.

  • SkyRoads, A fun space runner. Think Temple Run, except you’re in a spaceship that’s… not flying and is on a road, in space, and it can also hop! In hindsight, it sounds weird, but trust me, it’s fun.

Very cool. Jealous that you got to talk to Kenny Chou. Him, Josh Jensen, and the Elam family are all my heros - I’ve read the OMF manual so many times that I still remember all their names, nearly three decades later. I wonder how their baby, Bethany Kay Elam is doing these days, and if she’s still chewing on joysticks and slobbering over keyboards…

I vividly recall the distinct humor and light-heartedness of the manual, which instructed me to print it out, give it to my friends and even put it in my bird cage. I couldn’t do the latter since I didn’t have a bird cage… but I did I print out several copies and gave it to my friends. My first manual was printed on a dot matrix printer. Later down the line, I managed to upgrade to an inkjet version - and even printed out a few pages in color (because color printouts were a precious thing back then), put it in a nice folder and made fancy borders and stuff around it.

The manual really struck a chord with me for some reason. Maybe because it went so detailed into the back stories of all the pilots, or maybe it’s was the down-to-earth language of it and the candid descriptions of the developers that made me feel like I got to know them personally… there was just something different about it, compared to all other game manuals at the time. Till date, I’ve never come across any official manual for a game with this sort of character to it. If Ryan Elam is still around, I’d love to meet him sometime and have a few beers with him.

First try a running the update with a verbose flag and see if there’s any errors flatpak update -v

If you don’t spot anything obvious, try a sudo flatpak repair and then reboot your system (or just restart flatpak-system-helper.service) and see if that fixes it.

As a last resort, you may need to uninstall all your apps using flatpak uninstall --all --delete-data

After that, you’ll have to clean clean up your ~/.var/apps, ~/.local/share/flatpak, and /var/lib/flatpak directories. You could also try running Flatsweep.

The reinstall all your flatpak apps.

d3Xt3r ,

Depending on where you live, you could buy music (both individual tracks and albums) from 7Digital. It’s only a website so no need to even install an app. And in case some track/album isn’t available, you could use a VPN to buy it.

d3Xt3r ,

Yep, same here. IIRC it fails because it’s expecting me to enter a custom package name, but then there’s no field at all to enter a package name. I’ve gone thru the settings multiple times and couldn’t find that option so I too gave up.

Anyways, NewPipe works well enough for me, and if there’s some issue I could always load it in a browser.

d3Xt3r ,

If you don’t need Photoshop for actual work, then running it under Wine is a viable option. CC 2019 (20.0) works fine for the most part, but you need to install it in Windows first and copy over the installed folder. CC 2023 also works, but there’s no GPU acceleration support (yet).

d3Xt3r ,

Doesn’t work for me. Pretty much every link either says “This feature is coming soon. We’re currently working on it! Thanks for your patience.”, or it says that it’s not available in my country. :/
