Then what are Apple users? Meatheads?

iliketrains ,

I don't care much about what other people are comfortable in using, but please don't expect tech support from me. Every time I have to use Windows I get frustrated at how it forcibly feeds me stuff I don't want. Although I admit that sometimes I joke to people to switch to Linux when they get frustrated with Windows as well, but that's about it.

And also, some popular memes about Linux are probably just that, memes. Don't take it too seriously.

Anticorp ,

The force feeding of news and shit is fucking enraging! Why on earth did they start pushing that, and why is it so hard to turn off? Why do they turn it back on at every opportunity? I have a Surface Pro that I use for digital painting. I’ll be happily just painting along when I misclick the system notification area and all of the sudden “Trump! Trump! Trump! Outrage! Doom! Gloom! Global catastrophe!” gets shoved in my face. I’ll open a fucking browser if I want to see the news. Ugh! Fuck off! That’s honestly a huge part of the reason I finally switched to Linux as my primary OS.

squaresinger ,

Try going to a Linux community and telling them for what reason you wouldn’t use Linux in a specific case or to whom you wouldn’t recommend Linux. You’ll quickly see a lot of responses that aren’t just memes.

Lux ,

as a vegan linux user…

USE LINUX

STOP PAYING FOR THE TORTURE ANIMALS

youtu.be/LQRAfJyEsko

commie ,

no one is paying for the torture of animals and your youtube video sucks.

Lux ,

what do you think the money you buy meat with is used for?

commie ,

what do you think the money you spend on beans is used for? but after you give it to the same stores I do, it’s not your money any more and you don’t get to decide what happens to it any more than I do.

Lux ,

based on your comments, you’re probably just a troll, buy just in case, here’s a really simple explanation.

so i buy beans from a store. the store has fewer beans, so they buy more from the company that sells them. i don’t buy meat, so that is one less meat product that they have to restock. therefore, instead of giving my money to the meat industry, they give it to the bean industry. on a small scale, that obviously makes no difference, but if enough people stop buying meat, less meat will be produced, which leads to fewer animals being tortured.

commie ,

calling me names doesn’t change whether what i said is true.

Lux ,

hey i didn’t say you are a troll, just that you probobly are one. and yeah, it’s true that they can do what they want with any money they get, but what they will do is use it to replace the things that people buy. otherwise, people stop buying things from them.

commie ,

You’re proposing people stop buying things from them now.

Lux ,

??? i was saying that if they don’t sell what people want to buy, people won’t buy things from them

commie ,

the store gets to decide what to do with their money and they can choose to take the bean money and stock up on hotdogs for labor day.

Lux ,

and when they don’t have beans, i don’t give them anymore money

Unquote0270 ,

It’s crazy that you have to explain this in such a basic way but it’s still ignored/denied/misunderstood.

commie ,

if enough people stop buying meat, less meat will be produced

i don’t think that will ever happen

Lux ,

not with that attitude

commie ,

do you have a plan to make that happen?

thisfro ,

Being vegan (or at least not eating meat in this case) is a pretty solid plan.

commie ,

didn’t you already try that?

kttnpunk ,
@kttnpunk@lemmy.world avatar

You haven’t ever had good tofu, clearly.

commie ,

you think good tofu will make people give up their cultural foods and farming tradition?

kttnpunk ,
@kttnpunk@lemmy.world avatar

I’d say people have already given up on farming tradition, you have any idea what goes on in those places? It’s nothing like it was 100 years ago. Those foods in question are produced as quickly and cheaply as possible at the animal’s expense. Not to mention the consumer’s! I’m not missing out on anything except stress and growth hormones by not eating meat. Maybe some parasites too. Besides, the spices are where the real flavor has always been. I obviously don’t think change will happen overnight but I highly recommend you give some extra-firm tofu a second chance, maybe drain, deep fry it and pour on some sweet and sour sauce- you might just be surprised! lmk if you need a recipe. Hummus is really great too, if you need more proof vegan food can be indulgent and exciting

commie ,

I already drink Soylent and huel. I’m not saying anything about the palletability of vegan food. you seem to be the one fixated on taste.

kttnpunk , (edited )
@kttnpunk@lemmy.world avatar

ok yeah, cool but that explains EVERYTHING right there, imo. I’m sure they’re not that bad but you couldn’t pay me to try either of those tbqh- I’ll eat some fruit, thanks

commie ,

i drank a lot of huel (though i did skip a lot of the flavors) and i have to say i don’t think it’s great. every flavor is too sweet EXCEPT the unflavored unsweetened, but that was a chore to drink. by contrast, i just started drinking soylent original powder and i like it a great deal.

commie ,

no one is torturing animals.

Lux ,

some factory farms are torturing animals. depending on your definition, not all are, but the ones that remove pigs’ tails and castrate calves without sedatives are definitely torturing them.

commie ,

they’re not torturing them. they’re not being cruel for cruelty’s sake. The point isn’t the pain. The pain is incidental. it’s not torture.

thisfro ,

Too often it is…

commie ,

once is too often. that doesn’t mean that the vast majority of them are experiencing torture. or even millions. or even thousands.

lud ,

Windows licenses?

have you tried linux? its really cool

RvTV95XBeo ,

What a coincidence, so are vegetables!

darcy ,
@darcy@sh.itjust.works avatar

i know ;)

discomatic ,

But for real? Linux is actually so great. I’m running a shitty old PC as a media server and learning Linux as I go. It’s so light and nimble compared to a Windows machine. For anyone considering Linux, I highly recommend trying it out even if it’s just for funsies.

kubok ,

As an 11 year Arch user, I would like to correct the title: "Arch users are the vegans of the computer world". :-P

albertsy2 ,

What is a good distro for an absolute noob? Like me.

HappySquid ,

Linux Mint is pretty good, it has a Windows 7 kind of feel to it. Fedora is also nice, it great for tablet, also with touch. Both work pretty well and consistently out of the box.

discomatic ,

Watch a few beginner tutorials on YouTube and see which one appeals to you most.

darcy ,
@darcy@sh.itjust.works avatar

mint! its popular for beginners, ubuntu based, user friendly, lots of tutorials/troubleshooting help

narwhalperson ,

Mint is great for beginners. I never had any issues with it and the cinnamon desktop is very nice.

qjkxbmwvz ,

Depends a lot on use case, certainly!

Also, do you like a “bottom up” or “top down” approach? Grabbing a raspberry pi and setting up a headless (no monitor) home server is a great bottom up way of getting familiar with things — learn to configure various services and whatnot from the command line. Or, just start with a user-friendly distro with a GUI you like, and gradually work your way up to looking under the hood.

Anticorp ,

Pop!_OS is the absolute best for beginners. Pick KDE if you want a Windows experience and Gnome if you want a Mac experience.

mexicancartel ,

Nvidia? Pop!_OS probably.

Mint is great but its using the legacy display manager so some people witg multi monitors with different frame rates bla bla had issued with it tho.

covert_czar ,
@covert_czar@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Pop!_os for sure but dont mess up the gui like linustechtips did

DLSchichtl ,

Linux users are actually useful, tho…

ChojinDSL ,
@ChojinDSL@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Difference is, meat eaters don’t complain about eating meat. Whereas Windows users constantly complain about privacy issues, ads and forced updates that break things. As for apple users,…lots to complain about, but due to Stockholm Syndrome they don’t.

oaklyn ,

Omg shut up 💀💀

thecam ,
@thecam@lemmy.world avatar

There is quite a bit of truth to this.

Linux users are vegetarians while free software users are the vegans.

Teon , (edited )
@Teon@kbin.social avatar

I never tell people I am a linux user.
I tell them I use Kubuntu.

Telling someone, you love drinking pop is unhelpful,
Telling someone how obsessed you are about drinking MOUNTAIN DEW*, is way more informative.

FYI: I rarely ever drink pop.

Mtrad ,

I wouldn’t say it is “Year of the linux desktop!” But I do think eventually it will take up much more of the market of OS use. Maybe years and years away.

Linux has come a very long way. I found it is actually easier in many ways to Mac and Windows, more complicated in others.

For general use, and even gaming, it’s actually in a really good state for general users right now.

@kitsuneofinari@yiffit.net avatar

I mean, if you want to pay for an operating system that displays ads by default… More power to you, I guess?
