Can a damaged hard drive slow down a computer?

My mother’s laptop has been running as fast as a turtle on a snail going uphill for a long time now. Everything has been done to it, including formatting it and installing another, less cumbersome OS, but nothing improves. I have an HHD available, I have done some tests and it does work....

Even if your hdd is ok, ssd is much faster, first time you use your laptop with os installed on sdd, it’ll be new and pleasant experience for you that’s for sure, buy cheap one for the first time, 240-256gb is pretty cheap nowadays, and enough for casual web browsing cinema watching and office tasks

Hell yeah brother!) tumbleweed ftw! P.S my top 3 distros is debian tumbleweed gentoo because of WIDE architecture support meaning you can launch it on almost ANY pc out there

bruhduh ,
@bruhduh@lemmy.world avatar

Go for tumbleweed, it’s supporting wide range of architectures (including even powerpc so you can still use powerpc macs) and it’s rolling release distro on top of that

I remember i had to go from xp to 7 back in the day because of their Frameworks such as directx and .net because new games/apps just didn’t launched without new versions of them, i bet they’ll repeat this once more to push everyone. edit: to Linux

Linux mint keyboard shortcuts mimic those of windows tho, Linux mint is the best choice for windows refugees, this is one of the things majority of Linux community is agree about. Edit: in Linux mint you also can change keyboard shortcuts with gui tools already pre installed

I'd like to interject for a moment. (lemmy.ml)

What you’re refering to as Windows, is in fact, GNU/Windows, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Windows. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another closed component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising...

Even more, kernel source code is available and xda-developers community on device is active, unofficial support gonna be really long term, since 2 years of usage i just swapped battery on mine once, it’s truly a long lived phone

YouTube is finally cracking down on third-party apps that enable ad-blocking (alternativeto.net)

The company’s team clarified that their terms prohibit third-party apps from disabling ads, as it denies creators their due reward for viewership. Although the announcement did not specify any app by name, it’s plausible to presume that third-party YouTube apps such as NewPipe, YouTube ReVanced, Piped, and others might be...

Problem is, there’s shitton of content that needs to be archived and moved from YouTube, if YouTube stops to exist then all tutorials and teaching videos and all previously produced content will be gone, people want this content, so only true solution is somehow archive all YouTube videos and move them from YouTube, until it’s done, YouTube will have monopoly, and it’s bad situation we’ve found ourselves in

Yes, the only problem is storage, with development of bcachefs it could be possible to have raid6 and block level deduplication and transparent compression, because content would be archived by the community after all and common people like you and me can’t build whole datacenters, but just homelabs from used PCs and secondhand server HDDs

Btrfs snapshots not always work tho), i tell this story for *th time on lemmy but my fedora 38 btrfs broke completely from update to 39 and when i tried revert to 38 with help of btrfs snapshots, what came out is weird mix of 38 and 39 and when i reverted again, my whole ssd on which fedora btrfs was installed, this ssd locked completely, on hardware level, even though it was brand new, 2 weeks of usage by me, i fortunately repaired ssd myself and flashed lmde6 on it, but avoided btrfs and fedora after that
