OceanGate's cofounder wants to send 1,000 people to a floating colony on Venus by 2050, and says we shouldn't stop pushing the limits of innovation (www.businessinsider.com)

Guillermo Söhnleinm told Insider he has wanted to make humanity a multi-planet species since he was 11 years old, and that OceanGate was part of that ambition.

Running a Jellyfin server when I don't control IPs

I don’t know if this is the right place, I don’t even know if this will post but I had a Jellyfin server setup with a router and static IPs however with my ISP supplied router I have to use my router as an AP or I’m double natted, no IPV6, the dumb thing is that I can’t set IPs static on ISP router. You could use Tailscale funnel, cloudflare tunnel (I don’t know if cloudflare ToS allows video streaming) or setup a VPN/Tailscale and reverse proxy on a cloud VPS.

Maximum ghetto home server (lemmy.world)

Specs are slightly in flux right now, but basically it’s an HP ML310e Gen 8, with a random HDD cage on top for 4 additional drives, and a bunch of fans zip tied to the front to cool the 6 internal drives. Oh, and a little 7" display stuck to the side which I’ll get a stats readout on soon....

I have those same drive cages sitting in my spare parts closet lol. You can jam it into 3x 5.25” bays sideways!

How is the display connected?

Server pulls around 150W with drives spun down, over 200 with all 6 spinning. UPS with all the networking equipment, server, desktop, raspi and apple tv usually hovers around 200-400W depending whether the gaming PC is on.

My last month power consumption was 151.76kWh for the UPS or around $29/mo in electricity.

edit: server is an old Dell R710 w/ dual X5675’s, 128gb of ram, GT730 for transcoding, 6x4TB 3.5” SAS drives for the array, and a 500gb SSD for cache running Unraid.

I use calibre and calibre-web. I have the DeDRM and ACSM plug-ins installed in calibre so I can buy a book from ebooks.com or wherever, drop the acsm file in my auto import folder, then just download the drm stripped epub from calibre-web and import to the Books app on my iPad.
