The paper I mentioned in another toot also said that (autistic) people with malfunctioning autobiographical memory have trouble picturing both past and future.

It made me realize that I've never really thought about future. It's abstract to me. I can think about future in terms of upcoming events, or by preparing things for teaching or presentations, for instance. I've also had daydreams or plans about what I want to do. However, I rarely, if ever, actually think about it.

"Where do you see yourself in five years?" seems such an odd question to me. I can picture myself doing exactly the same things five years from now but that's not what the question is about, isn't it?

@LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic I do this and rarely imagine the conversation correctly.

More personal conversations rarely go as I think they will as often the gap between what’s in my head about the other persons reality and what they actually think is so large! Nowadays I tend not to bother pre-thinking it and try just to interact with honesty and compassion.

I wonder… before the Internet, how did most Autistics do special interests and research rabbit holes? Hang out in libraries? But lots of books? 🤔

Thinking back, I guess I used to look for television documentaries and public broadcasting type stuff. It definitely wasn't as helpful as Internet.

I remember a lot of photocopied catalogues for things like early personal computers, lead and plastic gaming figures. Special interest magazines (war gaming for me). They got handed around, well thumbed and dog eared.

How do my comrades slow down their thoughts?

Go for a walk, even leaving the room where the thoughts have built up helps.

Tai chi, yoga, exercise generally - enter the body - focusing on movement and breathing.

Those weird CBT exercises where you flex muscles in turn starting with your eyebrows and moving to your feet.

Lots of ways. Mainly walking.

Or fly then crash!
