WetBeardHairs , to asklemmy in What's an industry that would cause riots if it disappeared overnight?

It’s because the overton window has shifted so much that the Democrats only have to give scraps to workers and that is still the best those workers will get from any viable political party. It’s better than what the Republicans are offering which is getting financially pissed on or literally shot.

WetBeardHairs , to linux in Linux Mint Debian Edition officially released

Oh dang. It sucks to hear that my 10 year old GPU is still poorly supported.

It also rhymes words that have similar alphabetical structure, but poor phonetic similarity.

Like suspect and perfect.

But phones have a dedicated microphone and location tracking service built in. If there is a software vulnerability (there is always a software vulnerability) then it can be remotely turned on and monitored.

There are even instances of this happening to targets of governments: journalists and activists, especially. That Israeli company specializes in it and sells access to anyone who is willing to pay.

General Butler is that you?

WetBeardHairs , to asklemmy in Are you cancelling streaming services?

I think this post begs the question: What is everyone’s private trackers? Also let me in.

WetBeardHairs , to technology in Amazon To Start Running Ads In Prime Video Series and Movies, Will Launch Ad-Free Tier For Extra Fee

Yeah, those behemoths all share responsibility for killing the mom and pop stores. It’s not impossible to shop around to local variants. But probably the best solution is to learn how to kick the habit that American culture has foisted upon us all of buying endless piles of useless crap.

I cancelled my prime subscription years ago. I occassionally restart it for a month at a time if I need some esoteric hobby thing and I would be forced into paying for shipping or for prime. Then I’ll watch some stuff on their streaming service. Last time I used it, it was awful. Half of the shows were gatekept behind some ad system. And the “Amazon Originals” are all just extraordinarily expensive shows with terrible writing. Uhg. I am making it a point to not have an active prime subscription when Christmas rolls around. We (the collective we, as in, humanity) don’t need more garbage.

I had this at a polish restaurant one time. They called it the hunter’s stew - bigos. That dish apparently has a million variations that look different than this, though. I’m not polish so I could be completely wrong here.

WetBeardHairs , to nostupidquestions in Isn't OneDrive/Sharepiont the exact OPPOSITE of a shared drive?

OneDrive is really just an alias for a networked drive that points to a cloud location and is baked into every instance of Windows. Most OneDrive instances are for personal computers and they’re inaccessible to everyoen else. But you can manually share files.

SharePoint is a flexible enterprise website and fileserver for an organization to customize.

Teams is a Slack ripoff that allows employees to create teams with channels within those teams, and freeform chats. It also has a filesharing component to it.

It is awful to work around the half-dozen ways to store and share files. Really. Microsoft needs to unfuck this.

WetBeardHairs , to linux in What can you do on Linux that you can't do on Windows?

No, and it makes inter process communication a removed. You’re basically forced to use a tcp or udp socket on local host.

I see they also have an ARM model available. Shit… at $240 after shipping I might buy that for my 10 year old to get him into Linux.

WetBeardHairs , to asklemmy in What's the most expensive lesson you've learned?

Yeah - because you’re supposed to build an entirely new vehicle out of it, piece by piece. It shall be the ShipJeep of Theseus.

WetBeardHairs , to asklemmy in Atheists, is there anything religious that sticks with you to this day?

Yeah, I think there are mundane answers to this. But “mundane” in this case could include cosmological factors like the universe is a weird temporal foam of timeywimey stuff.

WetBeardHairs , to asklemmy in Atheists, is there anything religious that sticks with you to this day?

I have had some seriously bizarre cases of deja vu. Like, recalling dreams I had years before that exactly predicted a place I would be in in the future. It has happened five or six times. It does make me question things such as consciousness and my place in the universe. It also makes me wonder if my brain is broken.
