I'm trying to read This Is How You Lose The Time War, but I'm struggling to understand what is going on, and I'm not sure if it gets better. It feels like a dense read. I heard so much about it, but perhaps I'm too impatient?

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

52% into this novel and I am struggling 😅 but I am not at the same time. I just need someone to stop describing EVERYTHING

Was it necessary to describe how to do a google search on a phone? 😒😒😒 @bookstodon

Oof, what a slog that was. 🫤

“Don’t worry,” I thought, “it's only a preface; it won’t take more than an evening to translate. Put it off until later.”

It’s later.

The preface is 22 pages long. The language is old-fashioned, the argument is convoluted. It’s taken me a week so far, and I’m still only ⅔ of the way through.

On the other hand, it is one of the most interesting texts I have ever read, documenting the connection between (modern) folkloric witches and their familiars, valkyries, and the goddess Freya. The , , and writing communities need to read it.

A footnote from the text: A German journalist and poet [Julius Hammer] states in truth: “There are no poetic flowers that are so difficult to imitate as folktales and legends. Artificial flowers of this kind betray themselves as soon as they are made, even if they come from the most skilled hand.”

I forgot to share about February's reading. Read 11 books last month, with my two favorites being

  • "The Unbalancing" by R.B. Lemberg

  • "Unexpected Stories" by Octavia E. Butler

What have you been reading and enjoying lately?

@bookstodon I just found a graphic novel created in landscape, and I wonder why there aren't more like it? What a great way to spatially render citywide or other wide lens views. It seems like the best perspective for visual depth.

This one is titled ALL OVER COFFEE, by Paul Madonna, published by City Light Books in San Francisco. It is hard to describe, like poetic musings about everything we edit out of our attention in favor of the practical everyday, accompanied by art and architecture, from the micro to the macro.

@bookstodon In my quest for physical copies of several out of print books, I have had some success with BookFinder, Abe, Thrift Books, Bookshop, and Better World Books. Are there other services I should try?

I'm trying to expand my Stephen Graham Jones collection in particular, and it's daunting, esp. finding THE LONG TRIAL OF NOLAN DUGATTI in print. Ha. Maybe it's my long trial.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister

My rating: 4.5 ⭐️

⚠️ This review contains spoilers. ⚠️

This book definitely had me gripping its pages and wanting to know what was going to happen next. I love a good novel, and I also love the concept of , so combining the two was perfect. Did I know this book would be about time travel initially? No. I wanted to read it because it's a mystery/thriller. But as soon as Jen woke up on Day Minus One, then Day Minus Two, I knew. At first, I was confused by the frequent time skips and didn't understand why they were so random, but after learning that they may be happening so that Jen can pay more attention to the details of her surroundings and interactions, it made more sense. Like, if you had a chance to go back and do things differently, would you do it?

I saw some of his art online and thought it looked like “Invisible Hands” from Liquid Television, which I LOVED. Same artist! This didn’t have quite the same level of twisted, creepiness as that animated series, but I was so happy to find his work in comic form. There’s more too.

Someone stitched together all the “”. The voice acting is 🤌🏽 https://youtu.be/n5sP4yRb8Mw

Panel 1, someone in bed, their head covered in bandages, eyes staring and teeth bared. A weak whisper: "Come closer, Katherine. Let me see you..." Panel 2 a severe looking older woman with her hands around the shoulders of a tentative, white-haired teen: "Don't be shy. Say hello to your aunt."
