Also Californian, and I’ve seen Rivian’s presence exploding here in the LA area. If I needed to buy a new car today, Rivian is what I’d get.

Personally, though, I’m holding out for Aptera. The practicality of their dedication to extreme efficiency is just off the charts.

Veraxus ,

I guess business owners and government workers, who are all citizens themselves, don’t have Constitutional rights any more. Yay?

Veraxus ,

Companies and business owners have a right to free speech. These laws deliberately penalize free speech. Ergo, these laws are wildly and brazenly Unconstitutional.

Veraxus ,

have passed legislation that allows the government to penalize citizens for Constitutionally protected free speech, something it is not allowed to do

Fixed it.

Veraxus ,

Don’t buy exports from that country. Don’t visit that country. Pressure local businesses to not export there. Etc.

Veraxus ,

The state may not penalize people for free speech. Are you arguing that exempting people from state work for exercising protected free speech does not count as penalizing?

Veraxus ,

That’s literally what the whole article is about…? Did you miss it because you didn’t read the article?

Here’s the key bit…

The states that have passed legislation making it illegal for state agencies to work with companies that boycott Israel…

That is the State penalizing free speech and free expression, and is therefore Unconstitutional.

Veraxus ,

Yep! I like their software, but I’m a developer and power-user, and the way their stuff is artificially locked down to protect their money-printing trust screws me over as both a developer and power-user. If they started opening things up - even if it’s “open” like MacOS… I’d be inclined to buy more stuff.

Veraxus ,

It’s still very much EA. There’s already a great game loop there, but it’s still janky, barebones, missing features, and unbalanced.

Nothing wrong with waiting. I bought it to support the dev, but I’m going to shelve it for 6 months or so to let it cook more.

Veraxus ,

Debian + KDE Plasma is all you need. Saying goodbye to Microsoft and their predatory, horrible software is an absolute win.

Veraxus ,

Do they have a physical presence in the state, though? If they don’t, then Texas has no authority whatsoever over them. A physical presence is the only way kowtowing to these fascists makes any financial sense.

Veraxus ,

If Linux really, really isn’t an option, you should consider switching to Mac. It’s still really similar to Linux (given it’s unix based), and doesn’t try to screw you over constantly like MS & Windows does.

I’m in the middle of divesting myself of all Microsoft products, and I will never, ever go back to Windows after the near-weekly horror show that Windows 11 has been. I’m still on Team Linux, but Mac is by far the next runner up.

Veraxus ,

That’s all definitely true, but when it comes to software, the shenanigans are all reserved for iPhone, iPad, and the like. MacOS is still really, really great IMO as it’s not as locked down as the mobile devices… it’s still very Linux-esque.

And all the devices are more repairable than people seem to think. Upgradeable? No. Repairable. Yes.

But yeah, I really wish more developers would make native Linux versions of their software available… then it’s an easy choice.

Veraxus ,

Missing some really important variables, there (inflation, buying power, etc)… while using metrics that present an a deliberately inaccurate picture (median rather than average, and not adjusted for outliers).

Basically, this chart is useless, deceptive propaganda.

Veraxus ,

This is your daily reminder that the Democratic party is right wing and are just as ignorant of the mere definition of “leftist” as the Republican fascists are.

Veraxus ,

Conservative or left wing? They are complete opposites.

Also beware rightists/conservatives claiming to be leftist while practicing rightism (i.e. consolidation of power, authority, and wealth).

Veraxus ,

Oh, look it’s that right wing propaganda meme, again. Not a big fan of reading, I take it?

Veraxus , (edited )

It’s fundamentally wrong, and it is wrong on purpose.

Leftism IS egalitarian. It is fundamentally anti-authoritarian. It is concerned with ensuring that power (and wealth, which is inextricably linked with power) are equally distributed. Anarchism and Direct Democracy are forms of “extreme” leftism.

Rightism IS authoritarian. It is fundamentally anti-egalitarian. It is concerned with consolidation of power and wealth. Monarchism and Dictatorship are forms of “extreme” rightism.

Economic policies are completely beside the point.

A dictator who nationalizes things is still right wing, and has merely brought those things under his own personal control. “Benevolent” Rightism is still rightism.

A leftist society that votes to nationalize things is still leftist because they have achieved a quorum and share the control equally.

Rightism needs to muddy language and understanding to achieve enough support to seize power. “I am a leftist” some will say as they seize power for themselves and entrench themselves like a monarch or ruling class. They are rightists and they know what they are doing.

“Look at those authoritarian leftists” others may say, as they point to extreme-right power structures who may or may not call themselves “leftist.”

Social and economic policies are often thought about as left/right on their own, as some may be seen as advancing either egalitarian goals or authoritarian goals, but left-seeming policies under a rightist regime is merely self-serving for those in power and easily changed without the consent of the populace… and therefore not leftist at all. Likewise, even a leftist society could enact policies that could be anti-egalitarian, though such policies would put that society at ever-increasing risk of drifting right as power is gradually stolen from the people.

TL;DR;

The political spectrum is entirely about power and who wields it. Specific policies are utterly tangential since they are nothing but tools wielded by who is in power… an entrenched, consolidated entity… or the people themselves. The political compass twists this into knots in attempt to bolster “both-sidesism” and distract anyone exposed from the true and simple nature of rightism: hoarding power. When the people understand and can talk clearly and unambiguously about these topics, the entrenched powers stand to lose their privileged, predatory advantages… and they will fight against that with everything they have.

Veraxus ,

So who are the two corrupt corporate dogs that voted against?

Veraxus ,

They are - surprise, surprise - the only two Republicans…

  • Nathan Simington - 2020 Trump appointee

Hamas official says group would lay down its arms if an independent Palestinian state is established (apnews.com)

A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.

Veraxus ,

I don’t think they would, but I certainly support testing this claim.

Veraxus ,

California fine unless you live in a major fire danger area, which is a relatively tiny part of the state. This is bad-faith alarmist clickbait.

Veraxus ,

If they assume full liability for any collisions while the feature is active (and it looks like they do), then I can see that being fair.

Other articles are reporting that they used soap as a “lubricant”.

California won't prosecute LAPD officer who shot teenage girl in store's dressing room (calmatters.org)

The California Justice Department announced today that it has found no cause to file chargesagainst a Los Angeles police officer who, while aiming at a suspect, shot and killed a 14-year-old girl hiding in a department store fitting room....

Step 1: Take away cops guns. No lethal weapons for cops. Not a SWAT team? No guns.

Veraxus ,

Look at it this way: if we let Congress use our tax money for our benefit, then there would be less available for them to plunder, misappropriate, and generally hand out to their rich buddies.

Veraxus ,

US Government: “Anti-trust? Pfft, keep that bribery lobbying train coming and we will absolutely trust you.”

The Public: That’s not what “trust” means… oh…

Bad products lead to bad reviews, bad word of mouth, and bad reputation… which can - and does - kill companies.

But the first thing has to be true for the others to follow.

'My school abandoned me': California university cancels pro-Palestinian student's commencement speech (www.middleeasteye.net)

The University of Southern California has cancelled a scheduled commencement speech by Asna Tabassum, citing unnamed security concerns after her selection as valedictorian was met with a wave of online attacks directed at her pro-Palestinian views....

Veraxus ,

This is why I always try to specify Likud.

Veraxus ,

There has got to be a way to do this without hurting regular people.

Like I agree with the protestors 100%… but trapping people on a bridge? Blocking traffic? That’s dangerous and irresponsible.

Direct action and disruption is necessary, but this is absolutely the wrong way to do it.

Veraxus ,

The protests that Google employees are doing right now is the right way.

Protest in front of politicians homes, businesses, etc. Protest in front of companies and businesses that are complicit. Target the people who have clout.

Actions that harm only the general public… how is that supposed to work? What do you think the end result will be?

Veraxus ,

Leftism: The proletariat harming the proletariat is worse than ineffective, it is self-defeating.

Veraxus ,

Right now my favorite thing is sitting in the backyard using my Vision Pro as a giant, glare-free outdoor monitor.

Guess that means I’m “Nature Rotting”?

Veraxus ,

There’s a whole horrifying episode of Deep Space Nine about something like this.

Veraxus ,

Cutting contractors doesn’t count as a “layoff”. So in addition to cutting FTEs, there could be a massive number of contractors being cut loose additionally.

Veraxus ,

If I had to buy a new car today, I’d get a Rivian.

But personally, I’m holding out for Aptera. A car so exceptionally efficient that - for my needs - may never need to be plugged in? Yes, please.

Veraxus ,

I hear about use-cases like yours constantly. I feel like auto-makers are really dropping the ball by not offering “low-tech” electric vehicles. Not only would that result in lower price points, but it appeals to people who don’t want or don’t trust all the high-tech bells and whistles being crammed into EVs these days.

It’s clear that there is a huge market for people who just want an old-school car that runs on batteries, and not an overpriced luxury iPhone on wheels.

Veraxus ,

As much as I hate to admit it, The People’s Republic of Texastan kind-of makes sense as a starting point given the geography. If we can extend this to a nationwide network, it would be a very, very big deal.

Veraxus ,

This is why I prefer live interviews. I tell them they can use whatever tools they want, search for anything they want, there are no restrictions. All I ask is that they share their entire screen (if not in person) and try to “think out loud” as much as possible. I then time-box each step (usually 15m ea in a 1-hour interview).

I am most interested in HOW they solve the challenges I set out for them. Whether they complete it or not is usually irrelevant.

Edit: Lately, though - I warn against AI. I don’t ban it, but every person that has tried to use AI in an interview has gone down in flames. AI simply cannot be trusted… and if you haven’t learned that lesson, and you can’t even tell when it’s giving you bad information… yikes.

Veraxus ,

Any sufficiently skilled developer has a bunch of things they hate about the language they use the most, and are happy to tell you about it.

This is a characteristic I unironically keep an eye out for when hiring.

Can homeless people be fined for sleeping outside? A rural Oregon city asks the US Supreme Court (apnews.com)

The scenes were emblematic of the crisis gripping the small, Oregon mountain town of Grants Pass, where a fierce fight over park space has become a battleground for a much larger, national debate on homelessness that has reached the U.S. Supreme Court....

Veraxus ,

“Can blood be squeezed from a stone? A rural Oregon city asks the US Council of Monarchs.”

Veraxus ,

My basic web dev Docker suite uses about 13GB just on its own, which - assuming you were on 16GB (double Apple’s minimum) - wouldn’t leave much for things like browser tabs, which also eat memory for breakfast.

A fast swap is not an argument to short-change on RAM, especially since SSDs have a shorter lifespan than RAM modules. 16GB remains the absolute bare minimum for modern computing, and Apple is making weak, ridiculous excuses to pocket just a few extra bucks per MacBook.

Veraxus ,

That is basically my use-case. You add a DB service (or two), DNS, reverse proxy, Redis, Memcached, etc… maybe some containers for additional proprietary backend services like APIs, and then the application themselves that need those things to run… it adds up FAST. The advantage is that you can have multiple projects all running simultaneously and you can add/remove/swap them pretty easily.

RAM is cheap. There is no excuse for shipping a 8GB computer… even if it’s mostly going to be used for family photos and internet.

Veraxus ,

Running a suite of services in containers (DBs, DNS, reverse proxy, memcached, redis, elasticsearch, shared services, etc) plus a number of discreet applications that use all those things. My day-to-day usage hovers around 20GB with spikes to 32 (my max allocation) when I run parallelized test suites.

Dockers memory usage really adds up fast.

Veraxus ,

I understand the reciprocity.

Thing is, this was not okay when the US did it and it’s still not okay. Shame to see other countries learning the wrong lessons from the US’s mistakes.

Veraxus ,

Been doing that for years. Will happily continue.

But I’m just one person. Ubisoft won’t feel it unless hundreds of thousands more do the same.

Veraxus ,

Linux is great for both these days.

Veraxus ,

There are alternatives, depending on which Adobe software you usually use. For photos and vector I use Affinity, which works well via Wine… and there’s no subscription, either.
