I get very irritated when people (including and especially my family) don't answer my question but instead answer the question they think I meant to ask.

I'm not great at conversation, I think partially because I'm always thinking about how to say things and even rehearsing a future conversation in my mind. (Granted, this causes a lot of supposition on my part regarding the flow of the imaginary conversation.)

The point is that when I ask a question, it's usually worded in a fairly specific way. So the other person answering a different question (which is the wrong question, far more often than not), I have to say something like, "So, the answer to my question was 'yes'?"

And so I look like a pedantic jerk because they guessed incorrectly.

Someone asked whether I ever played Doom. No, not really. I told that I've never liked first person shooters and then it hit me. I never liked them as there's too much going on. In fact, I've never been a big fan of any types of shooters, the only exception being Cannon Fodder. Now, with the new-found autistic perspective, it makes perfect sense. Sensory overdrive all the time equals no fun. How about my fellow autistics, any fans of shooters?

@stuartb @LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic When my (adult) kids play Splatoon I can watch for about 5 minutes to feign parental interest but then I have to leave the room.

Turns out, it's only policy makers who get stressed when students talk about race. None of the 67 students in this highschool study reported increased stress when participating in an anti-racist intervention while many reported growth in awareness of social inequality.

This is the first real data I've seen on this topic and it appears, once again, that the fears of harming students is just a boogeyman in the minds of right-wing politicians.

@FantasticalEconomics @academicchatter @edutooters Yeah, this kind of thing is never really about "Won't somebody think of the children?"

If I try to psych myself up for a social event and focus on masking and pretending to be “normal” it never goes well, so I just don’t.

Do you?

@autism101 @actuallyautistic It's fairly obvious I don't fit in even when I try.

does anybody know a polite and societally acceptable way to phrase

"dear colleagues,
i would love to spend my lunch break with you, but if i do so my brain has to spend 30-50 minutes being a) completely overwhelmed by the amount of social context and b) severely depressed about its inability to participate in any form of group conversation.
if i am lucky this means a whole workday without a proper break, when unlucky this gets me an extra little mini meltdown in the afternoon which then renders me unable to work for several hours / the rest of the day.
love, pinkie"
