I think growing up with live TV made a big difference too. All the big movies/shows that were cultural touchstones for generations would be playing on repeat on one channel or another, so millennials would be randomly exposed to them without extra money/effort put in.

Nowadays, I don’t know how people who have grown up in the streaming era are supposed to find these movies, short of following a watch list, seeking out the right streaming service, and probably dropping some cash.

I had to deal with their T&S for my account being locked once. It was indeed a nightmare.

I consider myself pretty reserved and knew that I had never said or shared anything even remotely problematic, so I appealed, and they denied the request without even looking at it, then refused to respond to further questions (or even tell me what I supposedly did). It took me publicly complaining about the whole ordeal on social media for about a week for someone at discord to notice, look at my case, and finally realize a mistake had been made and unlock my account. They still never explained what happened.

I think it’s much less intimidating to new users now compared to when I joined last year. The barrier to entry has been reduced significantly.

There are tons of active communities now, mobile apps that work great (this is a big one), and many more tools to block content that you don’t want to see.

Public opinion seems to be souring on all the big corporate social media sites, and I truly think if we’re able to get the word out about federated social media platforms, people will jump ship.

Also, it’s hard to dislike a platform that isn’t showing ads, selling user data, or generally making decisions for the enrichment of shareholders.

At the risk of sounding like a tech bro who’s desperately trying to secure funding: this truly does feel like a major leap in technology that is going to change the world.

Anytime I hear it dismissed as “basically auto-complete”, I feel like it’s being underestimated.
