Yes Debian, then use Flatpack to get all the latest desktop software and enjoy.

Although we’ll be hosting the repository on GitHub

Why aren’t they using a self-hosted instance of Gitea? This makes no sense move to Github of all places.

What a great documentation ahaha

In addition to that, the extra 400 apps that can be installed via truecharts come with ABSOLUTELY ZERO documentation. It doesn’t even explain the environmental variables.

That’s assuming those applications even work. Most of them are broken and its really hard to push fixes. WG comes to mind, totally broken because someone decided to hardcode eth0 as interface name and modern systems use biosdevname.

@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

None, because Proxmox is questionable open-source with annoyances and a mangled system that fails often. TrueNAS Scale is overkill and buggy, not even a simple WG container they can get right. Install it all barebones on Debian 12, setup Samba for shares, FileBrowser for a WebUI, ZFS or whatever filesystem with the appropriate tools and if you need some kind of isolation use LXC/LXD that are now both available from Debian repositories without Snaps.

Yeah I also had that “issue” with it. That and the fact that it kinda makes minimized applications transparent for no reason, but when I’m running xfce4 is to have performance and I’m not sure I want to install another extension. Btw, how does Docklike Taskbar play with having the clock, and the status tray on the right? Can it do it?

TCB13 , to linux in How to package software for many distributions in their native package format?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Flatpak for sure because AppImages are slow to launch and Snap is Canonical garbage with tons of overhead.

I would like to see Thumbnails ( preview of current window ) instead of Icons in the Dock / Panel.

Yeah me too, that would be very nice to have. I was able to make what you have without Docklike Taskbar:

Does a “warning, cert issued by a government agency” count as additional validation?

From what I gather they can’t do that either.

Or maybe everyone is going to use cert pinning now.

Same as above. This would be effectively “adicional validations on the certificates”.

Or Firefox is going to stop trusting all CAs and make you verify each CA yourself. Which is a terrible idea for the average user.

Would be legal but annoying. Bet they would legislate to force their CAs / be exempt from that user verification.

TCB13 , to linux in What has been your experience with Flatpak?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Perfection. Debian + GNOME Software + Flatpak = Rock solid and clean OS with the latest software.

There are a few things that still need to be ironed out tho. For eg. communication between desktop apps and browser extensions such as this.

Another thing I would like to see is a decent and supported way to mirror flathub and/or have offline installations.

We both know the way the EU voting process takes place essentially makes it so we (the people) don’t have much of a real impact on the policy or on what happens over there. They kinda created this abstract super govt that is a lot of things but not democratic. I guess this is the price we pay when trying to bungle together a bunch of corrupt democracies. :P
