For the 1000th time, those extensions aren’t even close to what something really native would offer. They fail in some circumstances like drag and drop to certain plains and behave inconsistently.

What, you make me laugh. Someone is touchy. Now seriously and just to be clear I don’t work for Microsoft and I don’t like their bullshit nor I endorse it and I would rather never touch their solutions in my life.

However, I’m not “delusional” about Linux desktop nor I’m so out of touch with Windows’ reality to the point I say that you can’t disable the spyware like you did - because you can do it and you can also prove it with Wireshark.

Microsoft doesn’t have your best interests in mind, that’s for sure, they won’t probably care about the petition but at the end of the day history repeats itself and there will be a lot of companies and governments using Windows 10 that will essentially make them (pay) to extend its lifetime. About spyware, those same countess companies and government agencies force Microsoft to have group policy settings to disable the “spyware” otherwise they can’t use it. In short, Microsoft has all the right incentives to properly document Windows’ spyware and develop options to disable it.

You didn’t try hard enough. Windows 10 Enterprise with that app + manual tweaks in group policy described by Microsoft can be turned into a system that does zero reporting / calling home and one that runs very smoothly. For what’s worth you’ll spend less time changing those settings than what the time it takes to have a usable desktop experience under Linux with a few games working.

Current EOL for Windows 10 Enterprise is 14 Oct 2025 and there’s a petition going on to extend it.

Especially desktop icons are difficult to get right

This doesn’t just affect desktop icons, icons in general suck under Linux. Things have strange behaviors when selected, long names don’t work properly etc.

But most importantly: GNOME doesn’t want to be a traditional (Windows-like) desktop, so why would they implement features that don’t align with their ideas for a desktop experience?

Because GNOME is the only DE with some potential and by not having 2 or 3 simple optional features aren’t getting more traction. I bet half of the KDE users would be glad to use GNOME only if it had desktop icons. Using other DE doesn’t make much sense as you’ll inevitable run in GTK and parts of GNOME and having to mix and match to get a working desktop experience.

Again, GNOME had icons, v3.28 discontinued them for no other purpose than trying to re-inveting something that worked for a ton of people.

It depends. Old Windows games actually work better in Wine than on modern Windows.

Never saw this happening. Also wine has overhead.

Still garbage. Why is it so hard for the KDE guys to actually design something simple that makes sense? Starting with proportions and spacing between elements that they seem to be unaware of?

What games are we talking about? If they’re Windows games you may be better using Windows, no extra overhead and complexities.

Yeah pure gnome would be great if they:

1. provided desktop icons (like they used to);
2. had an option to disable the activity BS on startup and go straight to the desktop.

But oh well, the GNOME team is more occupied with censoring comments on their blog and trying to re-invent the desktop environment experience with animations and whatnot instead of focusing on what really delivers productivity.

Be careful with SBCs as they can be a money grab. When you sum it all, SBC + charger + cables + case you’ll end up with a price similar to an HP Mini i5-8th gen that is 10x more powerful and stable.
