Look I was alive and paying attention when carbon dioxide passed a threshold that is impossible to go back to. (Over 400ppm in the atmosphere.)

That was ten years ago.

Every climate scientist on the planet predicts society will collapse in the face of climate change.

But sure, keep your head buried in the sand by calling other people “doomers” because you can’t be fucked to look up publicly available scientific research.

I hope you are young so you get to see exactly how bad it gets and to question if maybe you were a dumb fuck to ignore it.

Because yes. Yes you were.

The problem is it is not a generational issue. It’s a class issue. Rich millennials, and Gen Z will be no better than the rich Boomers. They will die believing they are just more special than everyone else and that is why they deserve so much more.

Generations won’t change shit about who is in charge, sadly.

I’m just glad that millennials and Gen Z are educated enough to be killing off organized religion.

A big component of earlier generations accepting how bad things are is expecting them to get better in the afterlife.

“It will be fine as long as I’m forgiven of my sins and go to Heaven! Why would I worry about Earth?”

Thank fucking goodness there’s enough education for people to see through that absolute horseshit, a lie fed to the working populace to keep them compliant until the day they die.

(To be clear, nothing against general spirituality. Mostly issues with organized religion and promising eternal life after death, which not all of them do.)

Unfortunately, they probably have seen outside exactly how you mean it, they’re probably dealing with similar issues, and like you, they’re just at work, going through the motions, trying to get through the day, hoping to have a slice of it left over for themselves at the end.

That’s the most insidious part of it, it affects so many of us that none of us has the time, patience, or effort to give others anymore.

Not all VPNs are equal. Also, even with a good VPN, you still can have your real area leaking via your Real Time Clock.

Honestly, just pirating is a lot fucking easier than paying for attempts at multiple VPNs just to see if I can make an account at the BBC and watch iPlayer. I’ve failed at that more times than I’ve succeeded.

Finally, VPNs are only legal in the sense that the only thing the BBC can do is… deny you access to their content. Similar to Youtube and Ad Blockers. It’s their content, they own it, and it’s fair game for them to try to make people pay for it. Since the BBC is publicly funded, that means me making a BBC account to watch iPlayer via a VPN is probably breaking their “Terms of Service” which means they are legally allowed to remove my account at any time. Because I am effectively using the BBC without paying for it if I use a VPN.

It’s legal, but it’s still a TOS violation which can get you banned by a lot of services.

Don’t get my fucking hopes up! If only they would bring this back.

At least Matthew Holness had cameos in Toast of London and Toast of Tinseltown.

Legacy News Media: We literally have no idea why Gen Z has given up on literally everything, has decided to not save for the future, and instead is trying to live and enjoy their life now.

Real World: Dearth of opportunities to make a life for yourself, every industry has reached is maximum zenith and now makes money by wringing pennies out of consumers, you need money to exist anywhere, there are no more places to just be, and the government is clearly corrupt and about to be taken over by a literal fucking fascist party because the other party is full of pussies who don’t want to “upset the status quo” and keep letting the fucking fascists get away with shit, because “we have to follow the laws, even the ones that clearly benefit the fascists, passed by fascists. It’s the law and if we don’t take it seriously, everything falls apart. Sorry that means the fascists will win.” Oh, and climate change is about to destroy our ability to even have a functional society.

As a millennial, I’m ready for a fucking dirt nap. Things just keep getting worse and fuck nobody is coming to save me or anyone else. Everyone is so caught up in their own lives and problems no one has the time or effort to give anyone else, meaning we’re all suffering alone.

Literally what is even the fucking point of struggling to the natural end of my life? There isn’t one.

It didn’t have to be this way, but a lot of old selfish pieces of shit decided that it was more important to trash the planet and live the high life during their hayday, and then give all their children and grandchildren a swift kick in the ass and says “Children are our future! I just made that up! Now go fix the fucking messes we made for you! We’re not concerned with mass extinction, because we’ll be dead and it won’t be our problem! Good luck, or not!”

I live in the US, but there’s a lot of media I’d like to watch that isn’t available in the US. Piracy is literally my only option, because I’m not given legal ways to consume that content.

Except Google was only mentioned in terms of whether or not they support it.

You’re commenting on an article from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization dedicated to fighting for internet and digital freedoms, about an open standard that has only just begun being implemented widely.

Look, I hate corpos as much as anyone, but please let’s please tone down the alarmism.

@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Except passkeys are an Open Authentication standard from the FIDO alliance. Soooooo, not from a corporation.

fidoalliance.org/passkeys/

You can use passkeys in KeePassXC, if I understand correctly.

They are the equivalent of using a hardware key like YubiKey or SoloKey, except the passkey is stored on your phone/PC instead of a USB thumbstick.

Slavery called, and wants to remind you that it was a legal, formal, and accepted part of capitalism for a loooooooong time. Blaming it all on Reagan is ignoring massive swaths of US history.

The Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921 was also called “The Bombing of Black Wall Street” because it was the most concentrated area of black wealth in the US. Capitalism and Democracy decided the best way to deal with that was to bomb the living shit out of all of them, because the majority white citizentry couldn’t deal with the idea of successful black citizens.

Beyond that, this also ignores the entirety of the labor movement that won you things like a 40-hour work-week and labor laws preventing children from being employed.

People literally fought and died, shed their blood, to get you better working conditions, when the business owners were hiring the fucking Pinkertons and calling in the National Guard to fucking murder workers for standing up for their rights.

And everything was regulated and limited until Reagan came around? Give me the biggest of motherfucking breaks. Upton Sinclair would love to have a word with you.

Read a fucking book about US history before Reagan (The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a great one, it’s actually about the importance of unions, but most people’s main take away is that the food industry was wholly unregulated at the time). Capitalism has always been evil, has always been willing to turn a blind eye to horrible abuse as long as it makes money, and in general is unable to be constrained. The fact that we’re re-living the labor disputes of the early 20th century during the previous gilded age is proof of that. We already fought these battles and won, but now we have to fight them again, against the same class of rich twats as before.

@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The problem is that capital will always fight for less regulation. That is literally how we have ended up here.

Capital will never share the fruits of your labor freely. Regulations are useless as long as capitalists just pay politicians to write laws that benefit them.

It is similar to gun regulations. Studies show that cops largely choose not to enforce gun laws on white right wing nutjobs because they refuse to police “their own.” While the people who gun laws are enforced against tend to be minorities, whether they are black, disabled, or trans. Cops are more thn happy to take their guns away.

Similarly, cops are happy to test pregnant women who have had miscarriages for use of abortion drugs, because of course women getting abortions is more important than, you know, enforcing gun laws.

Regulations only work if they are evenly enforced, and we haven’t even figured that part out.
