My biggest complaint: In stock: never

Since I’m allergic to ever preordering anything, ever, for any reason whatsoever, this may as well be vaporware.

That second line made me throw up in my mouth a little.

Maps is the only service they have that isn’t bested by something else.

They’re not making pennies on that data.

To pay vs letting them slurp up your data you’d be paying Alphabet thousands a year. It will never happen, but sure. It’s a nice fantasy.

More than half of their claimed user accounts are inactive. So many in fact that they’re starting to auto-delete inactive accounts. The only way they’d agree to such an idea is if it were far, far more expensive.

What sick moronic idiot would want a cloud pc that’s accessible via… a pc

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe there’s a use case, but I’m anti-cloud and always will be. I struggle to think of a situation I couldn’t do better with in-house (or even air gapped) VMs of my own.

Anyone who watches 365 uptime knows that Microsoft’s cloud is a fragile laughing stock. They use a Twitter account because their own status portal is so laughably trash and unreliable. If you don’t believe me I don’t blame you. Here it is.

The day I trust any cloud platform (Especially Microsoft) is the day I promise to jump off a cliff.

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

I have a confident guess about what Microsoft runs theirs on… it ain’t Windows.

Reygle ,

Pretty @#%^ing ironic posting this shortly before the W11 23H2 build releases and literally un-does everything all over again.

The only answer is refusing to use Microsoft malware full stop.

The stuff Rufus doesn’t block is the everything horrific. It’s great at removing/side-stepping the annoying and does nothing to remove the excrement.

I do like rufus though.

Yeah- your own wired cameras wired to your own ON PREMISES NVR. Anything type of wifi cameras handled by a web portal are completely un-securable and it’s not a question of if the company shuts them down, but when.

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve used Surevision a number of times and like their gear too, all remotely accessible from mobile/etc but at least they’re systems THAT YOU OWN and THAT YOU OPERATE. Since it’s impossible to use/test everything I can’t say they’re any better or worse than others. I always recommend against “cloud” cameras and the people who ignore my recommendation always come back saying they regret it, usually 1-2 years later, but sometimes much sooner.

"Why is my internet speed trash after installing 15 wifi cloud cams? GEE I WONDER

Spend the money once or spend it every two years hrmmmmm

If you have walls and electricity, you have the capability.

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

Surevision is one example I gave. Yes, you can just “buy” it. People go the cloud route because they’re dumb and lazy.

Reygle ,

No argument there, but hey- sometimes assholes are right.

Outlook junk mail

I have an MSN email account that I access through Outlook and I’ve had it for about 20 years now. All my important communications come to that email. Lately, I’ve been getting an unbelievable amount of junk mail. I used to be able to block the sender and things would be fine for a while. Not so anymore! I emptied the junk...

Get a (decent) PAID mailbox somewhere else. PAY FOR IT. There is NO “good, acceptable policies” free mail host on Earth. I won’t recommend any, people have opinions on all of them and most of them are wrong- I’m not here to have that conversation.

Buy and use your own domain. Example: custom domains are supported by some if not all of of the PAID mail providers. That way if you ever move services again, you can take your [email protected] WITH you.

Get it operational and set your old mailbox to have an inbox rule that forwards incoming mail ONLY FROM THE STUFF YOU WANT TO SEE to your new mailbox.

Now you’ll have time to switch online services/memberships to the new, proper username/email in your own time.

Once you no longer need that forwarder, destroy the old mail account and let it die forever.

Roku lays off 300 workers and removes streaming content to save money (www.engadget.com)

Roku looks to be seriously tightening its pursestrings. The company’s laying off a full ten percent of its workforce, over 300 employees, in addition to a conducting a number of other cost-cutting measures, as reported by Variety. These job cuts are just the beginning, as Roku’s also removing streaming content, consolidating...

I bought a Roku TV when I moved. Used it a few weeks and then realized the level of horrific tracking my pi-hole server was blocking from it. (thanks PiHole) I reset it to factory and no longer allowed it on the network. Now it’s an acceptable TV with a completely dogshit useless remote.

Sort of related- is it even possible to buy a “dumb” TV anymore or are we stuck paying 8x as much for “digital signage” panels now?

Reygle ,
@Reygle@lemmy.world avatar

I shouldn’t be this excited about the link, but double-checked the specs on their official site and it’s not even equipped with ethernet/wifi- the world is so shitty these days that I almost squealed like a little girl. Thanks for sharing that.
