Krudler ,

I work in the field of mental health, specifically mostly in the area of recovery mentorship.

This is an area that is effectively dominated by women.

I wish women could see how that within the realm of healing, they have constructed their own systems of power where men are oppressed, abused, belittled, and prevented from accessing those services without standing up to / enduring that level of hatred.

In short, once the oppressed have the guns, they become the oppressors.

Why do people hate TV shows like The Biggest Loser and My 600-lb Life?

I’m watching both of these shows in their entirety and I don’t know why they’ve historically gotten so much backlash. One reviewer called TBL “a dumpster fire of a TV show” and others seem to think M6L is downright abusive. However, I can’t find anything particularly bad in either....

Krudler ,

These are television shows that exploit people who have the mental illnesses which result in obesity.

You wouldn’t take a bunch of people with clinical depression and make a show called “smile, ya dipshit” about them.

Biggest loser is centered around the idea that losing weight is the answer to people’s problems when it’s not.

The one where they have these severely ill people living their lives is just so others can watch, leer, and feel quietly superior that “at least I’m not those people”.

They are just exploitative, harmful garbage.

Krudler ,

forced to spill entire history of childhood SA and is depicted to have it resolved after brief pep talk with coach

Krudler ,

You know what, I completely agree, and it’s the anonymity of the internet that lets us talk about these real feelings.

I personally do not like the emotional toll that most shows take on me. I find most of the things that people find wildly funny to be really mean spirited.

I watched one episode of the office and I was so revolted by the paper thin excuses to set up “situations” for racist, sexist, homophobic and generally cruel gallows humor.

I see shows like Family Guy and American Dad, and while I can give them fair praise for often having very biting commentary, again it feels like they are gratuitous in how awful they aim to be.

I too judge others based on their preferences in these shows. I know people that watch various ones, and they all sit teem with spiteful glee as they watch and discuss them. I find that quite revolting and I also agree with you, it speaks to their character.

Why anybody would want a show where people conspire against each other, or damage their own bodies, or make complete asses of themselves, or watch them get talked down to by a snappy no-nonsense judge is beyond me.

Krudler ,

I don’t want to see “sympathetic” horrible people in my forms of entertainment. I don’t want to see the world through their lens or sympathize with them. I don’t want to see them get their comeuppance.

I really think those shows are thinly veiled excuses for people to wallow in spite and delight in suffering.

Krudler ,

It’s also a half finished, borderline empty, mechanically broken, quest broken, AI broken game.

I know people love the combat, and that won me over as well - it’s about as good as you can get. The rest is basically dog shit in my opinion.

Krudler ,

I quit drinking years ago and I reported every (e alcohol) ad explaining that I am no longer their target market and the ads are literally dangerous to me. They were gone within a few weeks - haven’t seen a booze ad in 5+ years.

Krudler , (edited )

I just would like to show something about Reddit. Below is a post I made about how Reddit was literally harassing and specifically targeting me, after I let slip in a comment one day that I was sober - I had previously never made such a comment because my sobriety journey was personal, and I never wanted to define myself or pigeonhole myself as a “recovering person”.

I reported the recommended subs and ads to Reddit Admins multiple times and was told there was nothing they could do about it.

I posted a screenshot to DangerousDesign and it flew up to like 5K+ votes in like 30 minutes before admins removed it. I later reposted it to AssholeDesign where it nestled into 2K+ votes before shadow-vanishing.

Yes, Reddit and similar are definitely responsible for a lot of suffering and pain at the expense of humans in the pursuit of profit. After it blew up and front-paged, “magically” my home page didn’t have booze related ads/subs/recs any more! What a totally mystery how that happened /s

The post in question, and a perfect “outing” of how Reddit continually tracks and tailors the User Experience specifically to exploit human frailty for their own gains.

Edit: Oh and the hilarious part that many people won’t let go (when shown this) is that it says it’s based on my activity in the Drunk reddit which I had never once been to, commented in, posted in, or was even aware of. So that just makes it worse.

Krudler ,

Yes I was advised in the removal notice that it had been removed by the Reddit Administrators so that they could keep Reddit “safe”.

I guess their idea of “safe” isn’t 4+ million users going into their privacy panel and turning off exploitative sub recommendations.

Idk though I’m just a humble bird lawyer.

Krudler ,

I was a game developer for almost 20 years, and I made so many games that it reached the point where I just realized, there is literally nothing left to learn, I have “done it all”.

I started in the day when there was no tools to make graphics, if you wanted graphics you first made a drawing program.

Eventually it became insanely boring and tedious to me. Sure, technology kept changing, but the underlying challenges were long solved.

Krudler ,

Spam

Krudler ,

When you show up to drop a video and ask for donations, you’re not adding anything to the community, you’re leveraging it for selfish gain. Therefore, spam. I’m not going to encourage this behavior by watching or engaging with the video.

Krudler ,

AI told me 75C/170F is ideal for hot tub water temperature.

Sure no problem. Once I get used to that I’ll work my way up to boiling peanut oil.

Krudler ,

They don’t, although they do not “rarely” interact with other particles, they move as waves, like all other energy in the universe.

Krudler ,

Simple answer: no

Krudler ,

You’re talking to somebody that studies particle physics okay.

Krudler , (edited )

It’s crank science, it relies on the tired light theory which is the flat earth of cosmology.

Edit

The results are a “smashing success” if you are willing to accept that the universe is substantially younger than we already know it to be.

Edit2

iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/…/ad1bc6#apjad…

I recommend you read the Discussion and Conclusions parts if not anything else. It’s pretty grim and contains a series of bald-faced “admissions” that this is shenanigans.

Krudler ,

I’m not going to elbow drop Owlboy, but I think you should try it within the refund window because in my opinion it’s way overhyped, and does not deliver much mechanically.

Krudler ,

I feel like most horror movies are preying on deep psychological fears of things that don’t or won’t happen, or happen only in the furthest reaches of the psyche.

The concept of just leaving your house to get some turnips and getting shot in the face is like a daily thing for every American, so I’m not sure that makes for good psychological horror.

Krudler , (edited )

Since the concept of God is unique to each individual, and totally irrational, and basically non-existent in an objective sense, the answer would be no.

Or I suppose more to your question, if you personally believe that God exists and is a physical being and you believe it’s made of atoms, then it’s made of atoms.

E

I wanted to add an edit here. I think it’s very baffling to me that you chose atoms. Atoms are not even fundamental particles; they are made up of smaller particles. And those smaller particles themselves are made up of smaller particles. And we’re not entirely sure where those particles come from, they might be from fields that are even more fundamental.

The point here is that I do not understand why you have chosen an arbitrary scale for matter. Even if we did accept for a moment that God was a physical creature, why would he be made of coalescences or larger particles? I know it seems ridiculous but it’s kind of like pondering if God is made of baseballs.

Krudler ,

It’s been like one of those long running soap operas.

For at least the last 5 years “today’s” front page is nearly indistinguishable from “yesterday’s”.

You can disappear for 6 months and come back and it’s exactly the same. You’ve missed nothing.

Orange man bad, fascism bad, phobia bad, sexism bad, racism bad, bosses suck, inflation sucks, boomers suck, ooh a celebrity! Celebrity dead so sad.

Krudler ,

That can’t even be denied at this point. There was a small window before the Reddit API fiasco and everybody showed up here to post the same rat-shit they gobble over there. I had a mini-freakout over a “If your username was a username, what would username username username username?” type question in AskLemmy or something. The moronitude feels inescapable.

Krudler ,

“If your username was a username, how username would username username?”

They’re here.

Krudler ,

I would love to learn more because I’m smelling a lot of woo woo.

Krudler ,

Thanks. Woo woo confirmed. Article is 6 years old and shows a failed design purported to be more enviro-friendly. Articles has exactly the weasel-words you’d expect: “Bio-sourced” lmao

e: Also check this disclosure out from the bottom of the article “Disclosure: Michelin paid for my travel expenses to participate in the Movin’On conference.”

Krudler ,

Perhaps your woo detector needs some fine-tuning.

A vaporware public-relations stunt product described as being made from “bio-sourced” items LIKE ORANGE ZEST

Bill Lastname, Cardholder

… Is also a real person, credit card companies specifically pay people to license their name for stock card shots, so that no one can sue them.

Krudler ,

I just had it happen again. That is to say I did a basic search and not a single returned item was what I was looking for. I tried again on DuckDuckGo and got the same useless results.

Search is fucking doooooooooomed and these workarounds aren’t helping all that much.

All I wanted to know was the pre-cooked weight of fast food company X’s basic patty. What I got was 20+ articles with press release, media hype, and stealth ads disguised as articles. Just tell me how many g of beef it is, k.

Krudler ,

Yeah I don’t know why DuckDuckGo keeps getting recommended as much as it does.

I couldn’t find on Google, the answer to a simple question the other day. All I wanted to know was the precooked weight of a particular fast food restaurant’s patty.

I made it to page 3 of the Google results, wading through page after page of promotional content, news releases, and sponsored “news-style” articles that were thinly veiled ads.

Decided to visit duck duck go, and was greeted with search results that were even worse than Google.

I realize it’s only one example, but to me it was an example of a search so specific, its egregious that the search engines simply refuse to return a page with the answer.

Krudler ,

The magical time where OSX “barely had any viruses and malware” never existed.

Source: Was instructor in a Mac lab for 2 years.

Krudler ,

While it is true that they were generally less prone to malware, that was not due to inherent security features/improvements over Windows, and was instead mostly function of the relative obscurity of the platform. Can’t get a virus from a downloaded game, because nobody makes made games for that platform.

In every lab with students, all machines were regularly b0rked and when I say regularly, I mean monthly. Complete re-imaging of 200 machines every weekend ended up becoming the norm because the techs couldn’t deal with the endless destruction.

It was really a matter of the platform having very little saturation in the market, and therefore less malware existed for it. However when in an environment with mostly Macs it was a shit show.

Krudler ,

Looking at what reddit was and what Reddit is now, I genuinely can’t imagine why anybody goes there anymore. The odd time I do some nice doomscrolling, I find that >99% of the content is re-heated and re-served. Nothing there informs me anymore. Nothing there inspires me. Nothing makes me think in a new way.

Every day the same thing ad nausea. Fascism bad. Sexism bad. Phobia bad. Musk bad. Orange man bad. Inflation bad. Boomers bad. Cats good. Name my rescue dog. Celebrity good. Celebrity dead.

That site should be renamed Reggurgitatit.

Krudler ,

Yes, but why?

Krudler ,

I’m on board with your main point. I supposed I’m still left wondering why people go to a place that gives them the exact same thing every day without variation. Wait… yeah… that’s actually the appeal. It is just like fast food: sweet, salty, fatty, devoid of nutrition, and always predictable.

Krudler ,

That whole “niche communities” thing never rang true for me. I mean sure, if you like cast iron you can go to the cast iron community. And see 9000 pictures of cast iron pans and people freaking out about cast iron. Or cooking… and you have to listen to THOUSANDS of recommendations for air fryers but not cooking.

The “communities” system never worked from the word go. The site content should have been organized with weighted tags. As I find few things more nauseating than “collective intelligence” which is mostly wrong, ill-conceived, closed-minded and half-baked at best.

Krudler ,

I can log on to anybody’s computer in the world, install Steam, and have full access to my entire game library.

I can make almost anybody I know (with limits) a “family member” and share my library.

I can stream my games from my computer to my phone.

My steam deck lets me play my entire library anywhere.

I see no personal benefit to using physical media anymore.

I guess a disclaimer would be that I trust Valve but you truthfully, I don’t trust all game companies/vendors.

Krudler ,

I think that’s because there is no answer to “why” - At least not one that would satisfy the human mind.

The best we are ever going to be getting is “it just is”.

A Multi-Billion-Dollar Question – Researchers Are Closer to Understanding Hydrogen’s Great Challenge (scitechdaily.com)

Hydrogen traps can be introduced into the material microstructure to immobilize or trap absorbed hydrogen, limiting the amount of hydrogen participating in the embrittling process. This study finds that adding the chemical element molybdenum to steel reinforced with Ti-carbides markedly enhances its ability to trap hydrogen....

Krudler ,

I hadn’t heard about the challenges involving storing hydrogen, so I’m finding this kind of interesting!

From my total layman appreciation of the article, it sounds like the issue is that within a containment vessel, the hydrogen, being the smallest atom, has a tendency to find every pit, gap, and crack. Which leads to embrittleing.

I’m a little confused here. What causes the actual embrittleing? Do they hydrogen molecules try to combine with other molecules and then it erodes the material?

Krudler ,

Hey thanks, it looks like the main issue is that it literally leaks and diffuses into the material.

From there it forms hydrides/voids and thus tiny pressure differentials which aid in cracking.

When it’s not doing that, being suspended in the material simply changes the underlying materials’ ductility in different ways under different conditions.

Looks very fascinating and all centered around the idea that the hydrogen atom is so tiny, it “fills in the holes” of other materials and wreaks havoc.

This is my understanding from again, a layperson perspective, but I did find it the links interesting!

Krudler ,

In my view, the issue is that most people are not willing to change their own patterns in the slightest.

It’s always somebody else’s responsibility to give things exactly how they want. Personal responsibility and decisions have no play.

“Fuck Nestle. Oh yeah but I needed water, what was I supposed to do, die? I had no choice but to purchase water in plastic, there was no other store around and I don’t know how to plan for my needs in advance. There is simply no way to anticipate that I could have needed water and fill a reusable bottle before I leave the house.”

“The price of fast food is insane. It does not occur to me that I don’t need to purchase this, and I have no inherent right to get it at a cheap price. It has also never occurred to me to go to the grocery store. Oh wait, yes it actually did occur to me, but I really don’t want to cook, I want somebody else to make the food for me and for it to be cheap.”

Personally, I’m done with Sony, I’m done with Nestle, I’m done with Walmart, I’m done with fast food, I’m done with Netflix. I’m done with all the places that behave unethically, and it would not be fair of me to complain about them while also patronizing them. I don’t think you’ll find this attitude in general population.

Krudler ,

Look man, I’m not trying to isolate you or pick on you… But I find this kind of victim mentality to be exhausting and frankly, intellectually dishonest.

You know darn well that your choices are not limited to pay or starve. You have the ability to adapt your life and to change your consumption patterns.

I even called out the “I guess I’ll die then” mentality in a previous comment. Get a grip on your own life, and stop being a feebleton, acting like a trapped animal that has no ability to govern their own life.

Perhaps there is a middle solution, where you examine your consumption patterns and realize that you’ve become a victim of the “convenience tax” and you can opt out at any time.

Krudler , (edited )

Ah yes. The old “I bear no responsibility for my own life so I’ll ball up a bunch of grievances and represent them as an insurmountable brick wall. I’ll double down on my hysterics and start talking about growing vegetables rather than take a sober look at my own consumption patterns because it is emotionally more soothing to point the finger at others; I’ve made myself a helpless victim. I’m nothing more than a cork floating in an ocean, subjected to huge forces beyond my comprehension and control. What happens in my life is like Brownian motion. Please do not mention anything about how I govern myself” meme

Get. A. Grip.

Don’t be a dumbass spreading blatant hoaxes thinking you’re funny.

Krudler ,

This keeps coming up and I keep replying, not to break anyone down but to point out the reality of the situation that a lot of people don’t seem to get.

Reddit administrators, developers, and even the leadership has gone on the record saying that they retain all copies of comments, they cannot be deleted (delete action only marks it as “deleted”). Furthermore they have said they will undelete/unedit any comments or account at their whim and some discretion.

Have you ever search-engined something and came to a Reddit post, and you noticed that the original OP is [deleted]? That is what I described above playing out in front of you.

You cannot retract your past participation in Reddit, what is done is done. The only meaningful action you can take is to not participate there.

Krudler ,

I live in central Canada.

I am reading the comments, and I am noticing that other people’s experiences are very different than mine.

For me, Google Search has reached the point where it will not even give me results for my search terms. I say this without an iota of hyperbole.

It’s so coincidental that this conversation comes up, but I actually sat there yesterday agog, looking at my desktop Firefox browser window… Scrolling through the entire search results page and realizing that not a single thing was even close to what I searched

It is noteworthy because I have been observing a steady decline, but it was the very first time I could make use of literally nothing that they gave back. In an unsettling way, the gravity of it hit me emotionally right there.

Krudler , (edited )

Don’t associate ME with those banjo-pickin’ inbreds.

edit: I had referred to the people of Saskatchewan as a bunch of banjo-pickin’ inbreds. I was wrong to make such a statement, and I’d like to apologize. The vast majority of the people in Saskatchewan have no idea how to play the banjo.

720 streams run from strange websites in timbucktoo have higher fidelity than the 4K stream I paid good money for.

Here’s a great price and you can share it with your friends. Wait not those friends. Wait your phone isn’t authorized anymore. Okay you authorized your phone but you need to authorize it again. Okay we just doubled the price and cut the quality again. Now you can’t watch the movies that you downloaded for offline viewing without an internet connection. Now your ad-free service has ads.

Netflix can take a long hard suck on my pudding factory, they’re never going to see another penny of my money again, and this is from somebody that goes back to the DVD days of Netflix.
