I’ve been self-hosting Matrix for like 2+ years now. The setup yaml was a lot to get thru in terms of reading what each set of options did. That felt like a lot but the reality was only a few things actually needed to be set and/or changed to make it work the way I wanted. Thankfully Matrix documented all the options out.

Overall, I’m extremely happy with Matrix. It has very much been set it and forget it once it was up. I’m excited to see where Matrix 2.0 goes.

I run it with a whitelist of other instances I do federate with. I have actually been considering opening it up.

I grabbed Element X to try it out but my self host doesn’t support sliding sync. There is a sliding sync proxy docker that got put out to help but not sure I want to set that up if it will eventually get added to main. Might have to just wait. 😔

How long did your initial sync take?

This right here. get something cheap, throw opnsense or pfsense on it and start learning. It will probably be incredibly frustrating at first but when it starts to click then it is really fun and rewarding.

I bought an old dell r210ii years ago and threw pfsense on it then swapped to opnsense and could not be happier. It is still in use today, a good 6 years later.

Are they part of a stack or docker-compose?

i recently picked up one and love it. These thinkpads are also flooding ebay so some with great specs can be had for less than the $238 newegg is asking for. Just gotta look around.

I grabbed a T480s model with 256gb NVME and 24GB RAM. Also includes fingerprint reader, this one seems to be hit/miss so check pictures if its important to you. Paid $200 delivered. Been running PopOS no problem. Its been a great little laptop in the last 2-3 weeks that I have owned it.

it did. the $200 was for everything i received from the ebay seller. didnt do any additional updates or upgrades.

Tons of the T480 and T480s models are hitting eBay since they seem to be coming off corporate lease. The T480 seems to be a little better if you want to do things like RAM and storage upgrades but both seem like great machines to me. If you want to save a few more bucks, the T460 is also an option. All those Lenovo models are really well supported with Linux if you choose to go that route. Mine came with a copy of windows 11 pre installed, which I promptly removed.

What is your machine naming scheme?

I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way. For several years I had them named after the planets, which worked well until the PCs for myself, my girlfriend, servers and Raspberry Pi’s quickly summed up to more than the eight planets. I’ve broadened it...

Battlestar Galactica years ago. Dradis for the domain name and ships for the computers.

Galactica.dradis Pegasus.dradis Basestar.dradis And so on. Made it fun.
