I’ll switch to something else when Canada gets data plans that don’t suck, but until then I am going to make use of the unlimited SMS on my plan.

IronKrill ,

Me! I am crazy and my opinion is that I like the round corners. Well, on Win11 where everything is rounded, anyway.

IronKrill ,

I see a lotta Blue subscribers riding him, but they’re surely a loud minority

IronKrill ,

I had to upgrade 4 years ago when I bought new hardware and went to 10 and now 11. I still miss 7, it was insanely more performant and feature complete. From a UI point of view, anyway.

TIL The Katy Freeway in Houston, TX was expanded in 2008 to 26 lanes (one of the widest in the world) and 5 years later had longer peak travel times than before the expansion (www.nytimes.com)

For critics of widening projects, the prime example of induced demand is the Katy Freeway in Houston, one of the widest highways in the world with 26 lanes....

IronKrill ,

Reducing traffic by raising prices is a pretty piss-poor way to do so if the only alternative is walking or decrepit bus lines. There need to be other measures taken.

IronKrill ,

This comment reads like you fed a how-to article into a homebrew AI…

IronKrill ,

Does Lemmy support alt text? I don’t remember seeing the option.

IronKrill ,

This response at least answers the most important question. They are paying Billet for the prototype. Personally I think they should do more than cover the raw cost, but at least they have done something.

IronKrill ,

Thanks for the update!

IIRC 30% was also the standard box store cut. Steam just carried it on.

Do you exerience back spasms pain so intense it makes you black out?

Today was the second time this year I’d thrown out my back. The back muscle spasms are so bad it puts me in entirely different state of mind. It’s due to the amount of brain piercing bursts of pains I experience. Transferring from the floor to the couch almost had me black out. It only takes the slightest move to trigger the...

You should treatyoself by getting that diagnosed.

What made you choose your instance?

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

IronKrill ,

Because Canada, woo! My definitely not picked on a whim choice has yet to fail me though, I haven’t personally experienced any downtime or slowdowns and I like the community overall.

IronKrill ,

To double or more the storage for much cheaper than the internal storage upgrades cost… is that not enough? Even the folds don’t have more than 512gb and they cost over $1000. My sub $500 phone from years ago is running a 512gb SD card, which I can seamlessly slot into my next phone when I swap.

IronKrill ,

Sure, let me pay the same I did for the SD card for half as much storage that will expire in a year ($40 for 200GB in GDrive). It’ll be super handy when I am on 250MB of cell data or have no reception at all and want to listen to my music in the cloud.

IronKrill ,

It is much much more of a pain to access content on small instances where it hasn’t synced yet. It means visiting those larger instances anyway to check if it’s worth subscribing to communities. And then trying to actually subscribe is a lesson in patience while it gives you no search results and errors out if you try to visit an unsynced community directly.

PSA: Be careful not to leave your Lemmy instances unmoderated

A while back I signed up to rammy.site a small lemmy instance run by a single person. It was a very nice instance, very stable and had pretty good access to other instances, or at least it used to. Recently though all of that has changed when the instance was taken over by far right-wing users from the right-wing instance known...

Should block pornlemmy as well in that case.

IronKrill , (edited )

Pretty sure PH already requires ID for people in porn. That’s why they wiped half the uploads some years ago pending accounts verifying themselves.

IronKrill ,

The problem with the active sort is seeing the same post I’ve scrolled by for three days now and didn’t care about in the first place. We need much easier methods to hide posts before that sort filter has any use to me.

Ad blocking on android

I would like to pirate on my phone sometimes and the ads on websites are problem. I’m not newbie, I know I can install firefox and get the uBlock on it but firefox android is a little bit slow so I prefer to use Opera browser; opera has an ad blocker but it’s a joke compared to uBlock. I’m in a restricted country and my...

IronKrill ,

Seconded. I love Firefox on desktop but the mobile UI drives me mad so I use Brave. It works really well and you can disable the Crypto garbage from the new tab page. It is the next best option after Firefox.

IronKrill ,

I seriously think Lemmy should add NSFL. There’s not really any downside. Although I’ll go slightly against the grain here and say I want to filter out NSFW and keep NSFL if I can. If I’m browsing my content feed I don’t want horny posts. I have a separate account for horny posts where I don’t want to see gore. This would benefit both use cases.

Tesla was so swamped with complaints about driving ranges that it created a secret team to cancel owners' service appointments, source says (www.businessinsider.com)

Looks well thought out, I’m interested! I think the biggest problem will be leaving the user enough control to modify the layouts after they’ve launched and not downsize apps after the user has upsized them and the like. As long as that is overcome this would be a fantastic way to use the desktop.

IronKrill ,

Containers have nothing to do with tab groups. One is an organisation tool and the other is a privacy tool.

what are .webp files and why has my online experience been plagued by them?

I don’t know what a .webp file is but I don’t like it. They’re like a filthy prank version of the image/gif you’re looking for. They make you jump through all these hoops to find the original versions of the files that you can actually do anything with....

IronKrill ,

This isn’t really relevant when webp is more optimised and smaller file size. People are determined to force things to be GIFs despite them looking terrible and taking up 50MB for 10 seconds of 720p looping video.

IronKrill ,

I have since tailored my app choice for webp so unsure nowadays, but my experience was that Windows photos could not open them, Photoshop requires a plugin, websites don’t allow uploading them, the list went on. I love webp but the application support has been (or was) abysmal for years.

IronKrill ,

There’s a plugin to add support in PS, it’s worth getting if you use them often.

I am so glad we don’t, modern Reddit awards are such an assault on the eyes lol.

Stanford researchers find Mastodon has a massive child abuse material problem (www.theverge.com)

Mastodon, an alternative social network to Twitter, has a serious problem with child sexual abuse material according to researchers from Stanford University. In just two days, researchers found over 100 instances of known CSAM across over 325,000 posts on Mastodon. The researchers found hundreds of posts containing CSAM related...

IronKrill ,

I browsed through an anime instance while trying to convince myself to like Mastodon and unfortunately I believe I’ve found some of this myself. I wasn’t going to confirm it was real, I just reported and closed out but considering I’ve never seen such content on other websites and this instance was rife with it, I don’t find this article hard to believe at all.

IronKrill ,

Image hashes? That could work. It could be a simple system like uBlock where you import filter lists to your instance and they’re easy to disable if their caretakers fill them with garbage data.

IronKrill ,

Surely a list of hashes wouldn’t be that useful?

IronKrill ,

Since these are coming from Youtube, nearly everything is a 320kbps MP3.

Where are you getting that format and quality from? I use youtube-dl and non-premium audio for everything is ~128kbps VBR Opus, which aligns with other sources I can find. If I use Premium then I can get up to ~256kbps m4a but still not 320 and I see no mention of 320 availability online. Is there a trick you are using?

IronKrill ,

Since no one else seems to actually be answering you, I’ll give you one. Smart Objects AKA linked layers. I use these in just about every single PSD and it has saved me rediculous amounts of time and effort undoing or redoing edits and avoiding destruction of a raster image by rotating or scaling it multiple times.

There has been a feature request open for this for 10 years and it is still not implemented. I first found out about the intention to add linked layers several years ago but I quickly gave up when I realised how much time it was taking.

I couldn’t tell you other features as I have not used Gimp much beyond trying it out for some light projects and to make use of some of it’s better-than-Photoshop color to alpha tools. But this one feature combined with all the UI, behaviour, and shortcut decisions is enough to keep me stuck on Photoshop for Windows for a long while yet.

Pretty sure the only people still talking about Reddit are the really passionate people that hate or love it. I am neutral and therefore stopped talking about it.

Twitter traffic is 'tanking' as Meta's Threads hits 100 million users (www.cnbc.com)

Meta’s new text-based social app Threads has quickly gained 100 million users since launching last week, which appears to be negatively impacting traffic on Twitter. According to web analytics, Twitter traffic declined 5-11% over the first two days Threads was available compared to the previous week. Threads was able to grow...

IronKrill , (edited )

The accepted reason for downvoting since early Reddit times is content that either doesn’t contribute to discussion or is factually false. Downvote was never meant to be a disagree button, but I am sure we’ve all broken that rule occasionally.

IronKrill ,

I upvoted you because I agree with you.

With a proper setup, which is not hard to do, you shouldn’t be getting any IP leaks or copyright letters. Just be sure your VPN has it’s firewall up and clients are set to only use the network adapter.
