Yes of course it will. I don’t know what rock these people are living under where they think they can’t export/import data between browsers. It’s a basic feature in every major browser.

Ilandar , to lemmyshitpost in "It has to be Chromium"

You have been able to import and export data between browsers for years. This is not an unknown or difficult to access feature.

Apple products are for people who want to be treated like children. The corporate parent locks down your device and controls how you use it. Android devices, depending on the manufacturer, are for people who want to be treated like adults - free to make their own decisions and mistakes. This is the main difference between the two.

Ilandar , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you're on Lemmy.World or Sh.itjust.works you should not subscribe to any Beehaw communities

I don’t know why that’s the case. For whatever reason that thread had a lot of kbin people in it, but earlier threads in relation to de-federation had more Beehaw natives and they were generally very supportive of the decision.

Ilandar , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you're on Lemmy.World or Sh.itjust.works you should not subscribe to any Beehaw communities

The top comments on the post that got linked earlier in this thread are all native Beehaw accounts

No they’re not. There is literally only one top level Beehaw comment in that thread and it’s only mildly critical (along the lines of “I understand but this isn’t the community for me”). Every other top level comment is from an external user, particularly the negative ones.

Why are you lying?

Ilandar , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you're on Lemmy.World or Sh.itjust.works you should not subscribe to any Beehaw communities

You said yourself that Beehaw is one of the largest communities. They aren’t struggling for users, despite stricter rules and de-federation. If you actually read the announcement threads about the de-federation, Beehaw users love it and are very supportive of the decision. The outrage seems to be entirely generated by people who aren’t members of that community, so who cares? If you’re that unhappy make your own community (or cry) but don’t pretend it’s the responsibility of Beehaw to pander to non-members.

And to the overall growth concerns, again - who cares? Lemmy doesn’t have to be a 1:1 reddit replacement. I’d say many of us actually consider it’s relatively low user count as a positive.

Ilandar , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you're on Lemmy.World or Sh.itjust.works you should not subscribe to any Beehaw communities

That is the direct reason, yes, but the larger problem is that without effective moderation they are unable to curate the type of community they want. “Safe space” is a loaded term, but if you actually read Beehaw’s documents (particularly the ‘spirit of the rules’ one) it is quite clear that they are attempting to create an online community where people feel safe and can be themselves free from attack and/or ridicule. The de-federation is because they are unable to deliver on this “safe space” promise at the moment. In my opinion that’s absolutely fine and they should be praised for taking quick and decisive action to protect their community. It doesn’t need to be some controversial thing that people attempt PR spin over. Just call it what it is. If people have a problem with it, unlucky.

Ilandar , to piracy in Which VPN Providers Really Take Privacy Seriously in 2023? * TorrentFreak

They don’t. I suspect you haven’t actually read one of these articles in detail.because it is in no way a recommendation from TorrentFreak. It literally opens with this:

The VPN review business is also flourishing as well. Just do a random search for “best VPN service” or “VPN review” and you’ll see dozens of sites filled with recommendations and preferred picks. Some VPN companies, such as Kape, even own review sites.

At TF we don’t want to make any recommendations. When it comes to privacy and anonymity, an outsider can’t offer any guarantees. Vulnerabilities are always lurking around the corner and even with the most secure VPN, you still have to trust the VPN company with your data.

Instead, we aim to provide an unranked overview of VPN providers, asking them questions we believe are important. Many of these questions relate to privacy and security, and the various companies answer them in their own words.

We hope that this helps users to make an informed choice. However, we stress that users themselves should always make sure that their VPN setup is secure, working correctly, and not leaking. Also, we advise people to properly research the company behind the VPN service.

NordVPN appears first because it is a sponsor, as is clearly stated:

*Note: Private Internet access, ExpressVPN and NordVPN are TorrentFreak sponsors. We reserve the first three spots for them as a courtesy. This article also includes a few affiliate links which help us pay the bills. We never sell positions in our review article or charge providers for a listing.

The same questions are put to every VPN provider on the list. It is unranked - whether they first or last is completely irrelevant.

Ilandar , to piracy in Which VPN Providers Really Take Privacy Seriously in 2023? * TorrentFreak

That’s not how the annual Torrentfreak VPN questionnaire works.

Ilandar , to piracy in Is a VPN necessary for torrenting?

Yes, it is really that dangerous. People recommended VPNs for a reason. Whether you personally are realistically at risk is an unknown - relatively few people are actually the targets of anti-piracy action. As others have pointed out, copyright trolls generally operate in specific countries and regions.

Still, I would never recommended engaging in copyright infringement without some form of protection. I understand you are poor but it really is a silly risk to take. The way almost all pirates get caught, at least from what I’ve seen, is through stupidity or complacency (one could argue they are the same thing). This is why the megathread tries to recommended best practice wherever possible.
