Probably only sorry because he realized this entire movement was a sham and he was duped.

HughJanus ,

The world continues to enshittify and rest assured no one will put their foot down to stop this.

HughJanus ,

The options on Android aren’t much better

Literally every one of them is better, because none of them are running iOS. That’s my subjective opinion.

unless you go for some obscure manufacturer who won’t support the phone with updates 1 year after its life cycle.

Samsung and Google both support devices for 5 years now. Doesn’t matter how long Apple “supports” the software because they don’t support the hardware.

HughJanus ,

So it got USB-C and replaced the vibrate switch with an “action” button.

Most iterative generation ever?

HughJanus ,

You mean like USB-C?

HughJanus ,

Don’t buy anything except a yurt to live on unclaimed federal land. Because these companies are all shit.

HughJanus ,

I mean we’ve had Sabrent, Corsair and other 2230 drives for a good while now. Don’t know why WD making one is suddenly news.

Elon Musk seen as working counter to U.S. interests in dealings with Russia, China (youtu.be)

Elon Musk's financial interests put him in a position of having his own personal foreign policy, but new reporting shows that whether it's manufacturing in China or the Starlink network being used in Ukraine, Musk’s decisions can run counter to stated US policy.

HughJanus ,

What exactly the fuck does any of this have to do with South Africa?

HughJanus ,

Thanks Mitch. Good to know we’re adding even more money to the budget that exceeds the next 64 countries combined 👍

HughJanus ,

I’ve literally never used the trackpads outside the desktop interface.

I know there are cool custom ways to implement but I’m not a software developer.

HughJanus ,

Honestly no idea why Valve isn’t partnering with these companies or why these companies (presumably) aren’t reaching out to Valve.

They work together. Asus and Lenovo sell hardware. Steam maintains software and sells games. Consumers get a sick handheld. Everyone wins.

Maybe Valve just wants to have a limited hardware target for game devs.

HughJanus ,

Well it went from ~1400 active users to ~69k users in <1 mo, according to fedidb.org

HughJanus ,

I don’t really know what their goal is here. Surely they’re not stupid enough to think they could actually win this?

HughJanus ,

Add multi-monitor support to consoles!

HughJanus ,

I mean it would just convert malicious failures into more frequent and unintentional ones.

HughJanus ,

Failures*, yes, that’s what I said.

HughJanus ,

At least it’s opt-in?

HughJanus ,

If users knew about this stuff and understood it, Firefox would bounce back.

I wish that were true. But how long have companies like Google and Meta been tracking people? Ask anyone on the street if they think Google and Meta know everything about them and they’ll say “yes but I don’t care” or “yes but it’s unavoidable”. There’s just no way people don’t know by now what incredibly invasive corporations they are. They just don’t care.

HughJanus ,

Mostly for increased privacy but also additional features. Firefox and it’s forks are usually relatively limited in feature set.

Speed isn’t a problem on any of them for me.

HughJanus ,

I’m fairly confident no one here is using Chrome.

HughJanus ,

I’d like to point out that they said nothing about it being a bad thing

I think it’s pretty clear that that’s exactly what they were implying. What is it that you think they meant by that?

And I agree with them. I also agree that it’s not racist but anything Chinese is pretty much defacto-owned and operated by the CCP.

HughJanus ,

Haha nah probably not

HughJanus ,

I personally thought they were implying that China could be a privacy concern

…and this is a good thing?

HughJanus ,

I left it out because its not important. You said they didn’t say anything bad and then said you thought they were saying it compromises your privacy. Maybe you don’t care about privacy but I think most people would consider invading your privacy very much “a bad thing”.

HughJanus ,

My dude, do you have amnesia?

I’d like to point out that they said nothing about it being a bad thing and that all they did was say it was Chinese-owned, hence making your comment a pointless attack of nonsense.

They were very clearly implying that being Chinese-owned is a bad thing (because of the privacy implications), which is the opposite of what you said.

HughJanus ,

Maybe you’d like to attempt again to explain what you meant? Because you have already confirmed my understanding was correct.

HughJanus ,

I use it at work because of it has the best dev tools.

Every Chromium fork has those same tools.

HughJanus ,

Okay so I’m just not sure what your point is then.

HughJanus ,

no ongoing cost to the manufacturer

The “ongoing cost” is manufacturing diversity. It costs more money to put heated seats in one car and not in another than it does to put them in all of them and allow the people who want them to simply pay to activate them.

That being said, it is a fixed cost, and should be a one-time purchase. Or at least offered as an option. At least Tesla does this correcrly.

Google funds Mozilla by paying to be Firefox’s default search engine

Google funds Mozilla primarily to avoid the exact kind of legislation in this post; monopolies.

Google can point at Firefox and say “look, not only are there alternative browsers anyone can install, but we funded the independent development of that browser”.

Not to mention all the Chromium-based browsers.

HughJanus ,

Buddy we’re all on this blue rock together. Those corporations couldn’t do shit if consumers didn’t let them. Plenty of blame to go around. We can encourage consumers to make better choices and vote for better regulations and still hold corporations and government accountable. We don’t have to choose.

HughJanus ,

Video games are supposed to be a fun escape of reality…

HughJanus ,

I don’t think they’re intentionally collecting sexual activity. Moreso that they might incidentally, via your phone app.

HughJanus ,

Mozilla should do an article about Mozilla’s privacy policy…

HughJanus ,

Well yeah, basically that you have no privacy.

HughJanus ,

This is very confusing

  1. I thought this discussion was about privacy?
  2. Autopilot has never been “involved” in a crash anymore than your parking sensors have. It is a driver assistance system. It manages your cruise control and keeps you between the lines on the highway. The “driver” (you know, the person operating the vehicle) is the one responsible for avoiding crashes.
HughJanus ,

Phone screens are very small and hard to see while driving.

But no, it isn’t. And I have disabled any connectivity in the last 4 cars I have owned.

HughJanus ,

It’s a false dichotomy. You don’t need to choose. None of them preserve your privacy.

HughJanus ,

Those cars don’t just disappear into thin air when your friend finishes with them. He’s just making them more affordable and accessible to others.

HughJanus ,

How long is it going to take for the pollution created by the material gathering, manufacture, and transport of the new EV to be offset by what you saved in fuel consumption?

~3.5 years

HughJanus ,

What do you think “autopilot” means?

HughJanus ,

Strange how they felt the need to pirate his non-work instead of just doing it themselves?

HughJanus ,

There’s no need to do a search. People are paying for this product. Meaning they couldn’t find it elsewhere.

HughJanus ,

I mean that assumes that literally everyone is going directly to Nexus Mods to look for this, which is laughable…

HughJanus ,

Are you even reading your own comments here?

HughJanus ,

My dude, constantly replying with the hope I’ll stop won’t make anything you’ve written less wrong.

HughJanus ,

Almost as if you wrote something to me that was more aptly applied to yourself.

HughJanus ,

I just get so excited to have messages in my inbox!
