@actuallyautistic Just had a phone call with my manager and they're using a paint roller. That makes occasionally high-pitched screeching noises.

The noise hurts. Even over the phone. It was incredibly distracting and I don't know how it doesn't drive my manager up the wall.

But they're happy "oh yes it does that".

I suppose at least Monday morning is my one meeting of the week 99% of the time. Work social interaction: ☑

I mean, one could posit being able to filter sensory experiences at will is an evolutionary superpower and not be all negative about it as well.
There are people that have jobs and functions in life that a skill like that is very beneficial to.
I once knew a kid who could not stand the the sound of metal cutlery against teeth resulting in his whole family having to use plastic forks.
I don't think he was scratching his head as to why it didn't bother others.
