Sorry… you think believing the Ancient Egyptians had electricity because those things look kind of like electrical insulators isn’t nuts? Because I have news for you- two things can look alike and be totally different things.

This, for example, is not a petrified screw. It’s a crinoid. A once-living sea creature.

I don’t know what those Egyptian things are, but it is definitely nuts to assume they’re electrical insulators just because they resemble them.

@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s the “stem” of an ancient sea creature (an animal, not a plant) from about 400 million years ago that looked something like this:

This is sea lily, one of its modern descendants:

I don’t think so. There’s this weird group of Hindu nationalists who think that this ancient civilization had all kinds of modern technology. Not just nukes- airplanes, computers, cars, etc.

Fuck Reason. Bunch of Libertarian bullshit. Don’t believe a word they say.

That article claims the study is from the National Bureau of Economic Research. Let’s look into who funds them.

winephysicssong.com/…/where-does-the-national-bur…

Between 1985 and 2001, the organization received $9,963,301 in 73 grants from only four foundations:

John M. Olin Foundation, Inc.

Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation

Scaife Foundations (Sarah Mellon Scaife)

Smith Richardson Foundation"

All four of these are characterized (by SourceWatch, at least, in their own descriptions linked in the above quote) as very conservative, small-government/low-regulation foundations. Actually they say the Scaife foundation is no longer pushing this ideology since Sarah Mellon Scaife took over, but (I think) during the 1985-2001 period they were. I wouldn’t necessarily trust SourceWatch on this (e.g. they say the Olin Foundation gave $20.5 million to “right-wing think tanks” in 2001, then give a list that includes the Brookings Institution. I’m fairly confident this is not a mistake, rather a combination of deadpan humor and a genuinely left-wing viewpoint that does see Brookings as part of the right-wing liberal establishment. But Olin is well known as a conservative foundation, so the characterization of Olin, if not of Brookings, seems reasonable.

Of course, that was from a 2010 article. Let’s see who funds them now.

sourcewatch.org/…/National_Bureau_of_Economic_Res…

Huh. No new information.

In fact, I can’t find any new information anywhere.

I wonder why that could be?

Humans are just machines to libertarians. Except themselves of course. They’re different. They won’t be a cog. They’re a free-thinker. You’re an NPC.

Also, more leisure time as a bad thing. Christ.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh you’re right! They do show who is funding them these days!

I’m sure none of those corporations have a vested interest in stopping UBI from being implemented or anything.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They kept insisting VOA had journalistic integrity even after I pointed out that they’re run by the same organization whose brief is to broadcast American propaganda to Cuba.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You’re right, banks and investment firms wouldn’t care at all about UBI. My mistake.

Also, leisure time is bad. People should be productive and find better jobs, not relax.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

So you’re claiming that the article doesn’t claim that people would not be productive enough under UBI? Shall I quote it?

Participants in the study generally did not use the extra time to seek new or better jobs—even though younger participants were slightly more likely to pursue additional education. There was no clear indication that the participants in the study were more likely to take the risk of starting a new business, although Vivalt points out that there was a significant uptick in “precursors” to entrepreneurialism. Instead, the largest increases were in categories that the researchers termed social and solo leisure activities.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’ll trickle down eventually! I’ve been waiting for it to happen since the Reagan Administration, but just be patient!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The idea that people should not be able to enjoy their lives and always have to keep clawing their way to the top to win at some imaginary race we’re all running is so repellent to me.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, again, I read it. Why do you think that changes what they said?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not seeing them agreeing with it. I’m seeing them call it bad news and a failure.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Funding for billionaire Andrew Yang’s idea for UBI is almost impossible according to the article. Not a shock. Andrew Yang is a fool. Of course, much like this article is making a big deal out of a single study, it’s pretending that Yang’s idea is the only one. Congratulations on falling for it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Apparently the piece of shit was a Republican all along.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, the case is dismissed. Go ahead and leave the country. Nothing could possibly happen at the airport.

I don’t know why they think this helps them at all. If he’s dead, there will be a massive wave of sympathy which will propel Harris into office.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Nowhere near as much. Not even close. Johnson only got elected because of sympathy about Kennedy. He got 61% of the popular vote. You don’t get that high a popular vote just for taking over for Kennedy for a year unless people feel really bad about the loss of Kennedy.

Prisoners fight against working in heat on former slave plantation, raising hope for change in South (apnews.com)

Beneath the blazing summer sun on a former slave plantation, Lamont Gross and fellow prisoners stooped in long rows, picking vegetables by hand under the watchful eyes of armed guards on horseback. He said breaks were short and infrequent, with nothing to protect workers from the heat....

I dispute the AP’s use of the word ‘former.’

FlyingSquid ,

That’s cool. I’ve always liked watching massive domino rallies. Ever since I was a kid and did it with the set of dominoes my grandfather had. I still have them. I’m going to enjoy watching this. Thank you.

This actually jibes with their argument that you can’t be a woman if you can’t bear children, something they say about trans women all the time. If you’re childless, you’re not a real woman to them.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This May, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a revision to the Clean Water Act that requires states to consider tribal treaty rights when crafting water quality regulations. The rule could protect resources such as wild rice, sturgeon, salmon and shellfish.

Nullified by Chevron, right?

Nothing but Ensure, V8 and tea every day is not exactly pleasurable dining.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Ick. No. I didn’t even like seafood much when I could eat it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Of course not. Why do you think I’m flying? Birds taste better.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It really doesn’t help that Muslims are not supposed to have dogs inside their homes (although many believe you shouldn’t have them as pets at all). It makes them much more likely to escape.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Cool. Still never flying again unless it’s absolutely necessary. It’s still loud, It’s still expensive, I still have to sit in an uncomfortable airplane seat and I doubt the “extra legroom” is worth the price.

One of the few draws of Southwest was that it was one price for everybody. I guess that’s not true anymore.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know, he seemed so likable before.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Definitely. And you know who else thinks so? His kids. Ivanka, Don Jr., Barron, that other son and he doesn’t have any other daughters.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That was never my opinion. My opinion was that Biden (and a lot of others) believed that, and almost no one ran against him. So if people wanted someone else to run instead of Biden, it was too late. And they didn’t canvass for anyone else anyway, something they got mad about when I asked them who they canvassed for.

But I was wrong about it being too late because I honestly did not think Biden would do this.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

How does it not fit that narrative? If everyone canvassed for another candidate, there might have been a legitimate primary challenge. But almost all the people who complained about Biden didn’t do that. So asking who their preferred candidate was and asking them why they didn’t canvass for them seems apt to me.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What? Canvass before having an opinion? It had been three years into Biden’s presidency when the election year started. People didn’t have an opinion of whether or not he should run or who else should be president by then?

You’re right, I don’t expect them to canvass. They clearly are very politically unaware.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Again- why did they not have an opinion after three years of Biden’s presidency?
