Why do they care so much? Why? I want to ask them to show me on the doll where the trans person hurt them.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

When it was making rules against gender-affirming care for children, at least they could hide behind the (ludicrously false) “we’re protecting the children!” argument.

They can’t even do that here. There is just no justification for this beyond either “god doesn’t want this to happen” or just basic cruelty.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Literally the first paragraph of the article:

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will no longer update a transgender person’s driver’s license with their correct gender identity, according to an internal agency memo sent last week — a move that was not prompted by any new law.

Fifth paragraph:

The agency’s memo states that “misrepresenting one’s gender, understood as sex, on a driver’s license constitutes fraud” and would expose someone to criminal and civil penalties, including the cancellation, suspension or revocation of their license.

Headline:

Trans people in Florida can no longer update their driver’s licenses: A new state rule may expose trans people to criminal or civil penalties if they try to update their documentation.

So in what way is the headline not supported?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Probably, but I think there’s also a big element of “God hates you because my minister said so” or whatever.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s an advantage that trans people who can ‘pass’ have, but not every person looks physically enough like their expressed gender and suddenly they’re “a man in a dress” or something.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I disagree that “sex” on a driver’s license means “biological sex.” Because that really doesn’t matter on a driver’s license, does it?

It seems almost fitting that Bitcoin mining is right up there with real mining when it comes to using up resources, polluting and generally making areas around it unlivable.

Except real mining is generally useful.

Florida parents say 2-year-old was restrained during Rosa Parks reenactment at day care (www.wesh.com)

ST. CLOUD, Fla. — Parents of a 2-year-old in Osceola County say their daughter, who they believe is the only Black child in the class, was made to play Rosa Parks in a reenactment that included her being restrained by another student in a police uniform and fingerprinted.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’d say day care as a whole is too young. If you want to give toddlers a lessons on race, tell them that the 2-year-old black kid is no different from the rest of them. Which is really easy: treat her as no different from the rest of them. Kids, amazingly, learn that lesson just by watching.

I’m not flying period unless it’s an emergency or there’s no other practical way to get where I’m going.

Otherwise I’ll just drive.

Unsafeness of Boeings aside, it’s overpriced, loud, uncomfortable, and just generally an unpleasant experience. I don’t love being in a car, but at least I can do things like move my arm more than two inches to the right or just get out and stretch my legs for a few minutes.

I would like to see some evidence that the competition resulted in Netflix losing a lot of subscribers, and thus money, rather than not hitting their predicted revenue targets. Because I would bet it’s the latter and not the former. I don’t know of too many people who said, “well, I had Netflix, but Disney is doing streaming video now so I won’t be watching Bake-Off anymore.” They just ended up getting Netflix and Disney+.

For a while anyway. Now people are dropping these services due to the price hikes. Unless you downgraded your Netflix service when they added lower tiers with fewer options and ads, to maintain the basic Netflix service you had in 2016, you’re paying an additional $5 a month today.

Netflix and all the other streaming services are built upon the insane idea that there are an infinite number of new customers that will continue to sign up regularly. Some of them don’t even think you need all that much programming to draw them. Paramount+ has a fraction of the original programming of Netflix, Peacock, Apple, Amazon, etc. but still costs $10 a month and will most assuredly continue to raise its prices based on the idea that there are either an infinite number of Star Trek fans or they will have to raise their prices.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It really is surprising how bad Netflix’s quality is. I can notice it on my TV and it’s only 1080p.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

In the 90s, my cable company kept adding new channels but the price didn’t keep shooting up.

FlyingSquid ,

There was a decent 5 year span in my life where the only time I ever pirated was to see British TV shows I wouldn’t be able to watch in the U.S. And if I could have paid the British TV license fee to see those, I would have paid it too. Because that would have been a total of two streaming services.

Even now that we’re down to one income we can afford two streaming services- one for video and one for music. But we sure as fuck can’t afford the dozen streaming services you need to have if you expect to watch all the programming people rave about as amazing.

I can’t afford Max and Disney+ and AppleTV+. If I want to find out why The Last of Us is so good and why The Mandalorian was a terrific show and how funny Ted Lasso is, and have the temerity to expect no ads when I’m already paying to watch, that alone would cost me almost $40 a month. Add Netflix and Amazon to that and it’s another $30+.

That is what I was paying for cable except with far less programming. On-demand and no ads are definitely advantages, but pay the same amount for a fraction of the programming advantages? Not for me.

There’s a ridiculous thing in the US that Europeans probably don’t know about called “rolling coal,” where people in big pickup trucks that they never use for hauling anything because it would scrape the bed modify their truck to belch out a huge cloud of black smoke on demand.

I have a Prius. They love doing it to me, because of course a hybrid that still uses gas must mean that I’m one-a them commie tree-hugging hippies. They probably pay as much in gas to do it once as it would take to get my car to go 5-10 miles. And they’re the ones putting Biden ‘I did that’ stickers next to gas pumps when gas prices go up.

Hey rednecks, you know what you have to do to not worry much about gas prices? Buy a fuel-efficient car.

It’s so weird how there’s this stereotype about French people hating Americans when people seem to have forgotten that Republicans once hated the French so much (for daring to not join America in a war) that they changed ‘French fries’ to ‘freedom fries’ for a while. And then there’s the bullshit “France always surrenders” meme that so many Americans believe. The French military is fucking fierce.

In my experience, it’s Americans who hate the French a lot more than French people hating Americans.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

but I don’t really like the idea that something you already own outright can be regulated to the point where it’s highly inconvenient or impossible to use.

It was highly inconvenient for all of those people who had cars that took leaded gasoline to have to either keep buying lead substitute to put in their tank at an extra cost or sell their car.

Guess we should have kept lead in gasoline.

People who need to also transport a wheelchair will use a different car, that is not terribly to get in and out of.

A car most likely wouldn’t work for many wheelchair users who drive because they essentially need something they can just get them and their chair lifted directly into, lock their wheels down and start driving. But that doesn’t require an SUV. A van would work too. That’s what a friend of mine in high school drove.

But what’s the question?

Far-right Israeli minister's criticism of Biden sparks anger at a sensitive time for US ties (apnews.com)

The Biden administration has skirted Congress to rush weapons to Israel and shielded its ally from international calls for a cease-fire in the four months since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that triggered the war. But the White House has also urged Israel to take greater measures to avoid harming civilians and to facilitate the...

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Good. Keep saying shit like that and hopefully Biden will get fed up and actually turn against Israel.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, I guarantee you that the Israelis would absolutely prefer Trump over Biden.

Trump moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. That was America directly provoking Palestinians. It was also exactly what Israel wanted.

I’m not saying Biden is Israel’s enemy or anything, but it’s the difference between kissing an ass and sticking your tongue right up the rectum.

And if we are lucky, between this and the increasing American public’s distaste for Israel’s war, Biden might actually at least try to do something.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You don’t see how he can not give Israel foreign aid?

Maybe he can just… not do it?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

apnews.com/…/israel-palestinians-poll-biden-war-g…

Broadly, the poll shows support for Israel and the Biden administration’s handling of the situation ebbing slightly further across the board. The poll shows 31% of U.S. adults approve of Biden’s handling of the conflict, including just 46% of Democrats. That’s as an earlier spike in support for Israel following the Hamas attacks Oct. 7 sags.

It’s an election year.

How would continuing to do the thing that is unpopular help him get votes?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Who they gonna vote for? Trump?

Possibly. That happened in 2016.

They gonna sit out because of it?

Possibly. Certainly people have been saying they will do that or vote third party rather than vote for “Genocide Joe.”

Will trumps voters sit home because of it?

Doubtful.

A Minnesota town used its anti-crime law against a protected class. It’s not the only one (apnews.com)

Hundreds of communities across the U.S. have for several decades tried to reduce crime, fight gangs and tackle noise and other neighborhood problems through the use of “crime-free” or “public nuisance” laws encouraging and allowing landlords to evict renters when police or emergency crews are repeatedly called to the...

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What does ‘frequently’ mean here though? The article sure doesn’t say. It sounds to me like ‘frequently’ is whatever the landlord decides. Which could mean 3 times in 2 years. After all, 3 visits from the police in 2 years would sure make the tenant seem sketchy without knowing the details.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not really surprising since Moses Hess was a socialist Jew who inspired both Karl Marx’s ideas on communism and Theodore Herzl’s ideas on Zionism. Hess did become religious later in life, but when he was at his peak, he was inspired by the Jewish philosopher Spinoza (who was very close to an atheist) and Renaissance humanists. I have read that Herzl was an atheist too, but I’ve never tried to confirm it. I do know that, as you said, his vision of Israel was of a secular state and his impetus was mostly “Jews need to get the fuck out of Europe before we’re all killed.” And he was pretty much right, unfortunately.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Okay, but no one was making that argument before Atatürk died. That’s not really what the Zionism movement was saying at the time. There was plenty of real antisemitism what with the whole Adolf Hitler thing…

My girlfriend (now wife) and I moved into my late grandparents’ former house after high school. Even slept in the bed that was never taken out of it.

Yeah, it was a little weird on occasion having sex in that bed if you took a second to think about it. Wasn’t difficult to get over it though.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It wasn’t even a ‘they’re looking down on me and disapproving’ thing, it was just kind of weird to fuck in my grandparents’ bed.

war

/wôr/

noun

noun: war; plural noun: wars

a state of armed conflict between different nations or states or different groups within a nation or state.

Sure sounds like what’s happening in the West Bank to me… unless the IDF is only killing unarmed people. Is that what is going on?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes you are missing something. You’re missing, for example, how CNN had GOP debates where they allowed people like DeSantis and Ramaswamy to spew their talking points unchallenged.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You told me to look up the definition of war. I did. Now you’re saying that definition is wrong.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You: “You may want to open dictionary and check what war is.”

Me: Okay, here’s the definition.

You: That’s not the full definition.

Then why did you tell me to look it up? Or at least not tell me which dictionary to look it up in that would agree with you?

Did you even check what the dictionary definition was before you told me to look it up?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You told me to look it up in a dictionary. I did what you told me to and you dismissed it. I have no reason to answer your question when you won’t even accept something I did that you told me to do.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Could be considering I did what they asked and that apparently didn’t matter.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I see, you got tired of saying my daughter deserved to be bullied and went back to insulting me instead.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry, too late to blame me now. You already blamed my daughter for her bullying. Twice.

And I’m not answering your questions while you continue to lie about what you said.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

No no, it didn’t seem judgy at all. I just wanted to clarify.

Trust me, compared to the guy who is claiming it’s my daughter’s fault for being bullied because “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” you’re calling her a straight A student and the most popular kid in school.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, I see, so it’s my fault I’m being accused of child abuse, much like it’s my child’s fault that she was being bullied. Fascinating things I’m learning here.
