A Minnesota town used its anti-crime law against a protected class. It’s not the only one (apnews.com)

Hundreds of communities across the U.S. have for several decades tried to reduce crime, fight gangs and tackle noise and other neighborhood problems through the use of “crime-free” or “public nuisance” laws encouraging and allowing landlords to evict renters when police or emergency crews are repeatedly called to the...

Absolute bigotry against neurodivergent people. Normalizing body language is exactly the sort of prejudice neurodivergent people have to put up with all the time.

FlyingSquid ,

Thinking more on this, you don’t need to even have autism or ADHD or any other form of diagnoseable neurodivergence. You could just be an introverted person who doesn’t do well in such situations.

And then there’s the nationality issue. Different nationalities and cultures have different body languages. It is disrespectful to make eye contact in Japan and expected in the U.S. So what does this AI do with a Japanese hiree?

– Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Atatürk died 10 years before Israel became a state. So I’m guessing his stance would be “what are you talking about?”

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The movement was very different before Israel was a state. There were militant branches, but it was not an overall militant movement and the idea of the displacement, let alone the apartheid and eventual genocide of Palestinians was far from universal. And really, in the 1930s, the focus was more getting as many Jews out of Europe as possible.

EDIT: FWIW, I just found this-

Now in his mid-twenties, Mustafa Kemal was obsessed with the idea of Westernizing the Ottoman Empire. While in Palestine, he went to Jerusalem in order to seek the counsel of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. Revealed in his 2011 biography of Mustafa Kemal, Princeton scholar M. Sukru Hanioglu writes that the young officer hoped to understand from Ben-Yehuda how he had managed to reinvent the Hebrew language after millennia of disuse and make it a cornerstone of Zionist culture. Mustafa Kemal would mimic this feat in 1928 by changing the Turkish alphabet from Arabic to Latin characters. Though we know little of his attitude towards the Zionist project, Mustafa Kemal’s encounter with Ben-Yehuda shows that he was acutely aware of the tiny Jewish renaissance that was taking place in Palestine, and he may have seen it as a validation of the nationalist enterprise he would launch several years later.

thetower.org/…/ataturk-ben-gurion-and-turkeys-roa…

So it sounds like he was at least somewhat sympathetic to some Zionist ideas in the 1930s.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What? How do you even discuss the situation without using the word ‘Palestine?’

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Ouch, in a country of 350 million people, CNN can barely pull half a million people who give a shit about their broadcast.

I don’t have cable so I don’t know… who the fuck is willing to advertise to a national audience that small? You could spend less money and have more reach on a radio station in one city.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I admit I did not click through, but the war has expanded beyond Gaza, so calling it the Israel-Palestinian war makes sense.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I said this to @MxM111 my problem is that the IDF is now doing raids in the West Bank too. When the IDF is in both parts of Palestine, using Gaza doesn’t really make sense.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I guess with dozens of different internet sources at my disposal now, I don’t trust any big corporate news network to really give me a good picture of news events, even breaking ones, because at the end of the day, they’re beholden to their corporate masters who demand that even stories that should be straight up news don’t do anything to harm anyone that might make them money.

That is something I do love about NPR and PBS. They have no problem criticizing their corporate funders and freely admit that they get funding from that corporation in a story that criticizes them.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Weekends are not very newsy on public radio, it’s true. But the weekday NPR stream is Morning Edition, which is basic news, 1A, which is more in-depth about current events with an attempt to be unbiased about it. Admittedly, they also do an hour of Fresh Air, but I would say the rest counts as news. And my station often breaks in if there’s something major going on.

www.npr.org/about-npr/…/npr-program-stream

I also think a lot of the things that channels like CNN put up as breaking news just aren’t. Even when they seem like they are.

I guess also because I grew up in the pre-CNN era, I don’t feel I need to know everything the second it happens. I mean it can be interesting, but if I don’t find out about it until 12 hours later, it’s not a big deal a good 90% of the time.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I agree. That was excellent. Originally anyway. Then it changed to ‘HN’ and had regular programming and does it even exist now?

FlyingSquid ,

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What facts did I twist? Because all I said was that the war has expanded to beyond Gaza to the West Bank whether their goal is to destroy the PA or not. I’m not even sure why not having that goal means the war can’t expand into the West Bank. Are you under the strange misapprehension that every war is about regime change?

Also, my link was one example. There have been plenty of others.

It seems to me that calling it the Israel-Gaza war when it isn’t just in Israel and Gaza is a twisting of facts. Even Wikipedia has the sense to call it the Israel-Hamas war since at least Israel claims that’s who they’re at war against (I would argue that is also false). And let’s say that’s true. Why can’t Hamas members be in the West Bank?

Was America at war with Pakistan when it killed Bin Laden in Pakistan during the “Great War on Terror?”

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Shots traded is not the same thing as multiple incursions.

How many military operations do there have to be in the West Bank for it to not make sense to call it the “Israel-Gaza War?”

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You didn’t answer my question.

Also, from the link I pasted that you obviously ignored:

On 15 December, Doctors Without Borders reported 2023 was the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank in recorded history.

And yet the war is only in Gaza.

Weird kind of peace.

That makes sense. I was able to quit because where I worked, literally everyone smoked. The whole office was a cloud of smoke. So I got a ton of it second-hand. It still wasn’t easy to quit, but I am absolutely sure that was how I was able to do it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you, she is definitely thriving now.

I think part of the issue here is something I just clarified to someone else- homeschooling and online schooling are not the same. Homeschooling is where the parent acts as teacher. Online schooling is where the child works with real licensed teachers and has real graded assignments by those teachers using the same textbooks public schools use and live videoconference lessons every day.

I’m glad your friend got their kid out too. I just wish more parents could, but it usually requires some parental supervision to keep the kid on track (unless you want your kid to fail), which means one parent has to stay home and that’s not realistic for probably the vast majority of people in the U.S. My wife has a pretty good job and the cost of living here is low, so we’re able to manage it as long as we generally do without luxuries.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Again, online schooling is not the same as homeschooling and she has more friends now than when she was in public school.

Why the fuck would I reconsider my decision to help stop her from being suicidal?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The context of her mental health may be important, but people not knowing the difference between homeschooling and online schooling is not my fault. Homeschooling is where the parent is the teacher. Online schooling is taught by real licensed teachers. She has classes every day via live video meetings. She has the same textbooks kids in public schools have because they all have Pierson textbooks due to Pierson’s monopoly. It is a state school, not a private school so there is no tuition and it has to adhere to state education standards.

None of that is true about homeschooling.

And I’m sorry, but I am not going to admit culpability for people not knowing the difference between the two and just assuming they’re the same.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

As I have already said at least twice now, she has more friends now than she did when she was in public school. She has more self-esteem now that she is no longer in public school. She is asking to go to things like events at the teen room at the library and make friends when she wasn’t even willing to join afterschool clubs about things that interested her.

Maybe read some of my other comments? I go into great detail about this.

You do not know my daughter. You do not know her situation. You do not know what you are talking about. I can see you’re trying to castigate me for being an abusive parent, so just come out and say it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, maybe it’s something about someone implying I’m abusing my child when I am literally stopping her from committing suicide.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Putting my daughter in online school is not a touchy subject. I’m glad I did it. So is she.

Someone suggesting I’m abusing her is a touchy subject. Can you really not understand why I might possibly take offense at that when I already told you I was dealing with a suicidal child?

Do you have any children? Do they have mental health issues? If so, what have you done about it? If not, who the fuck are you to judge me?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And unlike you, I don’t judge you for that. In fact, I’m glad you don’t have children if you don’t want any.

How about this- if you’re so convinced that I am abusing my daughter, how about I PM you my address and phone number and you can call CPS on me. Do remember that making a false call to CPS would probably put you in legal jeopardy, but you are convinced about it, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Me: “Why the fuck would I reconsider my decision to help stop her from being suicidal?”

You: “Still not developing real social skills in online classes. Social skills is by far the most important thing kids learn during their time in school”

If I am not allowing her to do “by far the most important thing kids learn during their time in school,” I’m abusing her. That would fit the definition of abuse, not allowing them to learn the most important thing they learn in school. It is neglectful and neglect is a form of child abuse.

I’m just going to paste these from another comment that I made since you aren’t going to bother reading it in the thread. You probably won’t bother reading it here either, but I’ll paste it anyway and then if you read it, you can decide whether or not I’m a bad father who is doing the wrong thing for his child:

my daughter was so severely bullied that she actually had developed anxiety to the point that she had trouble going to a lunch party at the house of an old high school friend of mine with about 20 people in it. She was starting to get suicidal. She broke down one day and told us she literally could not go to school one more day because she was so bullied that even the bullied kids bullied her.

she’s so mentally healthy now that she was able to tell some girls from her old school that were harassing her at the roller skating rink to fuck off. She has never had that much self-esteem. She’s also never had as many friends as she has now.

So somehow, according to you, I am not allowing her to do the most important thing in school, that thing being socialization, despite the fact that she was too bullied to be able to socialize properly in school and the fact that she has far more friends now than she ever had in her 6 1/2 years in public school. Which makes me an abusive father.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t think you would read it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I see, so bullying can be justified. Interesting position.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And you know the saying “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” yeah? It may explain the bullying.

Your words. That is saying the bullying is justified. You’re blaming her for being bullied.

I would not even remotely suggest that your extremely rude behavior would “explain” your extensive bullying. Because it doesn’t. That is victim-blaming. Why you think anything my daughter has ever done “explains” why she was bullied is just disgusting. It’s exactly the same sort of victim blaming as “does she wear short skirts? That may explain the rape.” There is no difference whatsoever.

And you being bullied does not excuse you from blaming the victim of bullying.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Can’t wait to see you in a thread about rape blaming the rape victim. Have fun!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That is a lie.

This is what you said:

And you know the saying “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” yeah? It may explain the bullying.

The saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” means the child behaves like the parent. So you were saying she was bullied because she behaved like I do. Which is blaming her for the bullying.

I don’t know why you’re telling such a ridiculous lie when everyone can read what you wrote.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, I see, so she intentionally acts like me and that’s why it’s her fault that she was bullied.

Still sounds like victim-blaming.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

But that isn’t doing both. This is subsidizing private hydropower. Taxing someone you just subsidized doesn’t make much sense.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That isn’t even a concern in a place like Compton (I lived in South Gate which borders Compton and Watts). Because even in places with a lot of violence, you don’t often get someone just coming through a window in the middle of the day if they see it open a crack because it’s pretty easy to defend yourself against someone trying to come through your window.

Now sure, if you leave them open like that at night, it’s a bigger risk. But even then, home invasions mostly happen when no one is at home. Which makes sense.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Along with the even older philosophy of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
