Sacramento high school biology final includes racist questions, targets students (www.sacbee.com)

A Luther Burbank High School freshman was surprised to read his full name included on a biology final. Not only that, but he was being ridiculed. “In high school, there are individuals who are cross-eyed like (the name of a fellow student) and (the name of the student previously mentioned), which is a dominant trait. Teacher pay is supposed to be near the best in the nation in California too. But we still don’t pay teachers enough and this is the result we get.

It’s not enough regardless.

This guy definitely found the right grift:

In 2016, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation received reports of more than US $220 million being lost by victims of relationship scams.[15] This was approximately seven times what was stolen through phishing scams and almost 100 times the reported losses from ransomware attacks.[15] According to FBI IC3 statistics, the crime has been at an alarming rise. Monetary loss in the United States rose from $211 million to $475 million from 2017 to 2019. The number of cases of reported romance scams rose from 15,372 to 19,473 in those two years.[16][17]

“The FTC estimated on average $2,500 was sent to romance scammers in 2020, more than ten times the median loss across all fraud types. Given the rampant use of social media and rise of online dating services, the opportunity for scammers to prey on individuals is only growing, explained Emma Fletcher, an analyst at the FTC. “To be able to make that connection and do it remotely is something that may not have been possible a decade ago, but it’s very much possible and socially quite common now for people to make love connections online and they’re taking advantage of that,” Fletcher said.”[18]

It really sucks that we’ve become a society full of extremely lonely people who are so desperate that they get conned just looking for some compassion.

A Black man got a job interview after he changed the name on his resume. Now, he’s suing for discrimination | CNN (www.cnn.com)

A Black man has filed an employment discrimination lawsuit against a hotel in Detroit, Michigan, alleging the hotel only offered him a job interview after he changed the name on his resume, according to a copy of the lawsuit obtained by CNN....

To the point that “Jackson” became jazz/jive-era slang that was the equivalent of “hey, what’s up?” when black people who used that slang were talking to each other.

FlyingSquid ,

For a while, I’d say starting really with the 1991 Gulf war but peaking at 9/11, the 24-hour TV news watching fanatic was a prime audience that you knew you could rely on.

But now between internet news and social media, it’s basically become a relic.

My father and father-in-law were that prime demographic. They both watched 24-hour TV news constantly. They were both born in 1931. They’re both dead now. CNN’s audience for this is gone.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t remember what they called it (maybe CNN Premium?) but for a while, they put their live video behind a paywall. Then that ended and then they did the CNN+ thing.

I went to a private school and I was abused by the same teacher for all six years I was there. He also ran the school so he basically controlled me and made sure I never told my parents, who didn’t figure it out until I was an adult and someone else told them because all I had done was drop hints and then I eventually gave up.

Fuck private schools. They are accountable to no one.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

you’ll still have to pay a lot of money to get real education.

And that’s a good thing to you?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And yet you want only private schools where the more you pay, the better education you get.

Make up your mind.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, I already quoted you once:

you’ll still have to pay a lot of money to get real education.

That was you defending your own idea after someone criticized the conclusion you came up with.

Here it is in context:

It’s pretty silly to pretend that isn’t what you were arguing for when someone can just look at the comments you made in the order in which they were made.

You can think the concept of ancient Egyptian sonar isn’t insane if you like, but the Egyptians didn’t have sonar because it was developed in 1915 and you don’t use sonar to look at a baby in the womb, you use ultrasound. Sonar uses sound within the range of human hearing.

Also, it isn’t true.

So is there any science behind the ancient test? According to the National Institutes of Health, in 1963 researchers decided to try out the method. In a study published in the journal Medical History they found that wheat and barley watered with urine from men and non-pregnant women kept the grains from sprouting. But in about 70 percent of the cases, the urine from pregnant women did cause the grain to sprout. The test, however, did not accurately predict the sex of the children. It’s possible that increased estrogen levels in the urine could have helped stimulate the seeds.

It definitely did not tell anyone the gender. It’s been tested and it can, as you said, detect pregnancy more than random chance but not perfectly. It cannot predict the gender.

I believe you, but I’m guessing it’s not especially common for a girl as young as 12. They barely understand the concept of flirtation at that age, and these days they probably think they know about sex by seeing internet porn when their parents didn’t know about it.

Anyway, like you said, it’s pretty easy to just not touch the girl.
