That’s why it was her most precious rock. They wouldn’t have put any old rock on display.

I was part of a summer camp that was run in conjunction with the local university where we got to design a museum exhibit and put it on at the university’s museum dedicated to anthropology and culture. We got to choose the theme of the exhibit (which didn’t have to fit the museum) and chose the local fossils since they were easy to find in any creek and we all loved going out and hunting them. I remember my part of the exhibit was crinoids, and I wrote the title card and designed the display- the crinoids fossils were in some sand. I don’t remember much else because we’re talking almost 40 years ago. But I remember how awesome it was to be in the museum and see people looking at my display.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I usually go to the restaurant for the food, not the view of the outside.

If you can sit and watch a beautiful vista of the ocean from the top of a cliff while you have your curry and it’s terrible curry, I’d rather see the pickup trucks.

The best Mexican restaurant in town here is in a strip mall and we used to have a great Turkish restaurant in a strip mall. There also used to be a Chinese restaurant here in a strip mall that offered cool and unusual stuff like jellyfish as an appetizer (it’s kind of crunchy).

I’m just not sure what strip malls have to do with anything. You can make the atmosphere inside nice. If you’re super worried about people not enjoying the outside view, you can put curtains in front of the windows.

OP, I appreciate you posting these stories, but I would ask you if you wouldn’t mind finding a different, less overall biased source.

Voice of America is called that for a very good reason. They claim to have journalistic independence, but they are a U.S. government news source. They are run by the same “independent” group that is funded by congress and sends American propaganda to Cuba, so their claim of independence and lack of bias is really hard to buy.

@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

For American news coverage: The Associated Press, NPR, PBS. All free.

Although for a story like this, the local paper is often a good bet and is sometimes free. It is definitely free in this case and has far more information: www.sltrib.com/…/salt-lake-city-evacuations/

Bias in a story like this isn’t a big deal, but it can be in other cases and it’s best to avoid what is essentially a government mouthpiece.

“What to do with deli meats”

Don’t eat them regardless.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a PB & J fan myself, but even if you’re going to have meat in your sandwich, maybe boil some chicken or something. Deli meats are about as unhealthy as you can get. Filled with salt and preservatives.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, in fact. Dual citizen with the U.S. and planning on getting the fuck out if Trump wins. But also, a boiled chicken is easier for a sandwich in terms of cutting it up than a baked chicken and if you put condiments on it, it tastes fine.

I haven’t eaten meat in many years, but I remember preferring rotisserie.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Processed meats — like lunch meat, hot dogs and sausage — are generally considered unhealthy. They’re high in calories, low in protein and — in the case of mechanically separated meats — use undesirable parts of the animal as filler. Canned and packaged meats often contain nitrates or nitrites, which studies link to several cancers. Even minimally processed cold cuts include preservatives to prevent spoilage after being sliced.

“Fatty, processed luncheon meats like bologna, salami and pepperoni have large amounts of saturated fat and sodium, both of which have been linked to cancer, obesity and heart disease,” Zumpano shares. In fact, processed meats are actually considered carcinogenic.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

There’s probably worse meat-related stuff you could put in your body. I was a big fan of ordering corned beef hash back when ate meat and went out for breakfast. That stuff comes out of a can. I don’t even want to know what’s in it.

FlyingSquid ,

Dramatic action was not taken.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I would say both mass relocation and doing something about carbon emissions would be dramatic action. I’d much prefer the latter. I’m doubting even the former will be done.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been saying the same things, especially about refugees. If Europeans and Americans think they have a migration crisis now, wait until it is above survivable heat in the tropical countries in the summer.

Show people this- zurich.com/…/there-could-be-1-2-billion-climate-r…

1.2 billion. With a B. And they hope drownings and, in America’s case, a wall, is going to do anything to stop it. They’re going to have to mount machine gun nests along every border and coastline.

I’m honestly really surprised that Catholics in this country aren’t going apeshit about Louisiana mandating that the Protestant version of the Ten Commandments be displayed.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

learnreligions.com/different-versions-of-the-ten-…

Unsurprisingly, Catholics aren’t big fans of the ‘no graven images’ commandment.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

There’s also only one set of laws the Bible itself says are called the ten commandments and it’s not either of those. In fact, it’s the laws Moses wrote after getting pissed off at the idolaters and decided the first set weren’t explicit enough about what his god did not want people to doing.

To make it clear: no yeast in blood sacrifices and don’t boil a baby goat in its mothers milk. Or else.

www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus 34&ve…

(Note that the Old Testament doesn’t really make it clear what the ‘or else’ is going to be in your own case, just that God is a big mean motherfucker and you don’t want to get on his bad side.)

It’s really only brilliant if your opponent doesn’t know about it. Which Ukraine does.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It was a brilliant tactic in WW2 where most reconnaissance was done by pilots looking out their windows and noting what they saw.

In the days of computer analysis of satellite images, drone footage and just basic tools like heat-sensing IR cameras and Lidar, it’s not all that great an idea. It’s pretty easy to figure out just from heat signatures whether or not that line of tanks has no people in them.

There are “Arab Israelis” as well. Basically Palestinians who weren’t driven out and are now citizens or the descendants of those Palestinians. They have to serve in the IDF regardless of their politics (which, as you can imagine, aren’t very sympathetic toward Israel). They also prefer to be called Palestinian Citizens of Israel, but the media usually calls them Arab Israelis or Israeli Arabs to differentiate them from the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

FlyingSquid ,

Maybe we can convince them that he is so that they won’t vote?

Who am I kidding, they would absolutely vote for the corpse of Trump.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think if you kill Hitler, you get Chancellor Göring.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure why their intent matters at this point. They didn’t manage to kill Trump like they apparently wanted to and they’re dead.

I’m also not sure why my personal speculation on their intent matters. I’m no one special.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Ok. People have looked into the intent of presidential assassins before and there’s just no pattern. Some of them did it for political reasons (Booth, Czolgosz, Sirhan Sirhan). Some for personal reasons (John Hinckley Jr., Squeaky Fromme) and some were just completely batshit (Charles Guiteau). You could also put Hinckley and Fromme in the ‘completely batshit’ categories, but Guiteau was a level unto himself.

And then there’s Sam Byck, the guy who tried and failed to assassinate Nixon twice. He fits all those categories.

The point is, there’s just nothing to conclude here based on history and we will, barring the discovery of some sort of manifesto, likely never know what the intent was.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Better? Maybe not. But I also don’t engage in such speculation because I prefer to have an evidence-based outlook and I am fine with not knowing the answer to something. When it comes to this dead man’s reasons for doing the thing he was killed for, there’s just not enough evidence. We don’t even know what his political leanings were because he was a registered Republican but also gave a donation to a left-wing group.

I don’t know what his intent was. I may never know. I am also not an expert in psychology or criminology, so any speculation on my part would be far more likely to be wrong than right.

If you want to know a dead person’s intent, asking a former comedian is probably the wrong way about doing things. I can brainstorm some amusing concepts for you if you’d like. Maybe he did it because he was fired from Claire’s and was going to prove to everyone that he could pierce a fucking ear.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is really not the time or place to make that argument.

It’s (to be pedantic, statutory) rape regardless. Which is the point.

Agreed, but if I knew anything about programming botnets, I would absolutely program bots to just one by one post this specific thread for weeks. Just get banned and post again a couple of hours later with a new bot.

Good luck doing anything about it with the API being free so you can use mod tools.

I just shared it with a bunch of people while also telling them that I didn’t care if they didn’t get it and I wasn’t going to explain it.

They’re used to this.

Edit: 2 of them got it. That’s pretty good for me. I’ve played to smaller crowds.
