🔴 The Earliest Photo of the Man Who Discovered the First Dead Sea Scrolls?

This 1953 photo shoot covers both the excavations at Qumran and the early work of sorting the fragments. I was surprised to see a photo of the “two shepherds” who are said to have been the first to find scrolls standing outside the entrance to Cave 1Q.

@bibliolater @histodon @histodons My paternal grandfather, who was born in Jerusalem Palestine in 1918, said that as a child he and his friends used to throw rocks at clay jars in those very caves. He told many tall tales, always with a dash of history.

@bibliolater @histodon @histodons His ability to insert himself in history was astonishing. For example, he was a member of a Scottish unit that fought at the Battle of Al Alamein (he does have a photo of him in uniform, however). As a kid, I was fascinated by his stories. Now as a historian, I do take his tales with the proverbial grain of salt. But if they were true, they would certainly add a level of interest to the historical realities.
