Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes, has passed away. Steve’s book was the first thing I read after my diagnosis.

We interacted some online. He was a kind and thoughtful person. He will be missed. 💛

“We are bereft: Steve Silberman has died. He was our dear friend, and a tireless and enthusiastic ally to our entire community. His book NeuroTribes enlightened, empowered, & educated millions about autism and autistic people. May his memory be a blessing.”

Question for the @actuallyadhd and potentially @actuallyautistic

I am someone who gets migraines and have since I was 8. The reason was never uncovered, but I know migraines are more common among neuroduvergent folks like myself.

My question for you is this:

When you have pain, what do you do to help manage it so your emotional regulation goes out the window?

In short, I can be mean when I am in the midst of migraine.

I want to do better.

Any advice?

First, I articulate to everyone around me that I'm in pain from a migraine and indicate what is most bothersome, then I keep to myself. I wear sunglasses and a brimmed hat to reduce light pain, ear plugs for sounds, and place ice around my neck and on my head. If that doesn't help, I add CBD and eye or neck massages, depending on the tension involved

Travelling for a week for work is exhausting. It leaves me feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated, and burnt out. Like a sponge wrung out.

I get home and am irritable and mean and asking for space to decompress is taken as a personal slight that I don’t like someone, when it’s only that I need to calm my body down and have no expectations on me.

I love this person very much but don’t know how to manage this part of work travel.

What might others suggest?

Military spouse here. We had to communicate this to each other a few times before it stuck, but we came up with a routine for reuniting hugs, kisses, space. Acknowledge the loneliness of those left behind, but give the space needed for decompression.
Cannot stress the communication part, the one at home is lonely and loves you, is excited to share in your companionship again. You're exhausted and squidgy, needing time to feel like yourself. I hope this helps

Yes. We had a similar problem the first few deployments. Don't get me wrong, there were arguments and hurt feelings before we figured it out, but we talked about how we felt when we first see each other and how the separation made us feel. It's also a readjustment to the one at home, because their routine is about change.
Talk and listen. Best remedy imo 🕉️
