#IndieInkAwards reviews for this year are coming in! I'll cross-post them here in replies to myself as they come in. Feel free to follow the hashtag to make sure you see them all! (These will be on other social media as well.)
First up, Tiny Elf Arcanist reviews A Necromancer Called Gam Gam and calls it "a moving exploration of grief and found family wrapped in beautiful prose"
Today's review! Talio's Codex" by J. Alexander Cohen:
"A nail-biting thriller. I was convinced at one point that it would end in tragedy, but the book has a happy-for-now ending. If you like exciting, high-stakes legal cases and appreciate fantasy worlds, this is the book for you. Highly recommended."
Time to nominate the Queer Romance Club read for August. Give me your suggestions for the poll, which I will post this weekend.
New releases, old favourites, classic must-reads, series starters, award winners, feel-good fluff, mixed genres, anything’s good as long as it’s both queer and romantic 💕
The Crag by Claire Sutherland out in late July from Affirm Press and SET IN WESTERN VICTORIA!!!! Mount Arapiles to be exact. Look I'll take being the site of potential murders over not existing completely any day!
#JaneAusten died today in 1817. 207 years after her death, her critique of social and relationship mores remains as true today as it was during her lifetime.
Here's #Summer 2024 with Samantha Harvey painting a portrait of a life and Susan Muaddi Darraj exploring how the war in #Gaza is both remote and close to home. Carolina Bruck – translated by Ellen Jones – examines race and loyalty, while @jackklausner and Patrick Cash conjure up very different returns.
On the @fictionable#blog Joshua Cohen writes from Tel Aviv, and Zhenya Oliinyk reflects on making #comics in the shadow of the war in #Ukraine
So here they are – the amazing #ShortStories from Samantha Harvey, Susan Muaddi Darraj, Carolina Bruck translated by Ellen Jones, Jack Klausner and Patrick Cash for #summer 2024.
For my advance planners--a horror discussion panel one month from today at the Oxford Valley B&N! This is a SUPER good panel, and I'm really excited about it.
This particular B&N invited me to do an event to mark the publication of A Misfortune of Lake Monsters--and I parlayed it into a panel because I love organizing these things! Seriously, the best fun ever to bring great horror writers together!
Enchanting picture book, A Bear, a Fish, and a Fishy Wish follows the adventures of a hungry bear and of a fearless fish as both of them do their best to survive. The art is truly incredible and really full of humor. Children will love this story : between animals and a vivid, colorful and incredible art, it is a perfect bedtime story and snuggle and giggle.
🔴 🎙️ Aaron Alexander Zubia - The Political Thought of David Hume
“A conversation with Aaron Alexander Zubia about his recent book, “The Political Thought of David Hume: the Origins of Liberalism and the Modern Political Imagination” (Notre Dame Press).”
Next: Wislawa Szymborska, Sie sollten dringend den Kugelschreiber wechseln - Anregungen für angehende Literaten [2000, erstmalige Übersetzung ins Deutsche aus 2023]. #bookstodon@bookstodon
Ugh. 1990 is almost 35 years ago [!!!], OK, but I'm still very happy to finally having finished Moving Pictures by #Pratchett. What a boring book, where each and every acting character is stereotypically cis male, EVEN BOTH OCCURRING DOGS!!1 🤯
[Pratchett of course writes really funny sometimes, in it, BUT. Will continue my journey through his creative realm, though!]
A supernatural family saga, a searing social critique, and a lyrical and potent account of displaced lives, We Are a Haunting unravels the threads connecting the past, present, and future, and depicts the palpable, breathing essence of the neglected corridors of a pulsing city with pathos and poise.
