The communities above are not managed by a project organisation (the only one I know if !librewolf), it’s just that until last week, lemmy.ml was considered the go-to instance for FOSS and Linux.
Network effect is here, I know it first hand as I’ve been busy posting to !linux to try to offer people an alternative to the lemmy.ml community.
But I’m not planning to do that with the communities above, and same for the other FOSS communities, because I have other stuff to do
The vast majority of people going to those communities just want a place with enough people to answer their questions on the topic. They are not going to organize a migration, most of them are probably not even aware of the issues with lemmy.ml administration (seems like the post got removed from lemmy.ml: lemmy.ml/comment/11606059)
I see where you come from, and I get it to an extend, but the vast majority of people are probably going to keep going to those communities without any change.
If someone wants to organize a migration of those above communities (the thread I linked above can be a starting point), feel free, but I wouldn’t count on it. And without an active migration, those communities will stay the reference for those topics.
For all your boycotting needs. I’m sure there’s some mods caught in lemmy.ml’s top 10 that are perfectly upstanding and reasonable people, my condolences for the cross-fire....

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy’s massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It’s been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let’s say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they’re what’s colloquially referred to...
This is the best solution - the answers are in our hands
There is the problem of network effect though. People who frequent communities on lemmy.ml are often blissfully unaware of how problematic that instance is, like I was until a few days ago, and so they’re unlikely to just move as they have no immediate reason to.
It’s easy to say just pack up and move … but I’ve been really struggling to find an alternative for !linux, to name one example. The equivalent communities !linux and !linux are rather stale with days old posts without comments.
So I think it’s not just something an individual user can solve for themselves, and I think that the larger instances also have a role to play here. If they would defederate from lemmy.ml, it would urge users along to move away from lemmy.ml communities towards communities on other, more suitable instances.
Next to that, we should also spread awareness about the lemmy.ml problem, and that was my intent when I originally made this post.

People have choices. If they want to keep using the Lemmy.ml community, that’s their freedom. The alternatives exist, if they want to switch, they can.
Intrigued by your name change, you are really pushing for this.
I’m aware that people are slowly grouping up to one specific community per topic but I don’t think this means there isn’t an issue with communities being fractured. Using a third party tool to gauge which communities are popular also isn’t a great solution. Just searching Linux shows:
I don’t think each one of these communities has a different audience. It’s the same audience, but there isn’t an obvious answer for which one to visit or post in.
Everyone fully missing the point here. This is the banner image for !linux (that’s not where we are right now for the record), and it has a normal JPEG size of 7.7MB. When it’s served as WebP it’s 3.8MB. OP is correct that this is very stupid and wasteful for a web content image. It’s a triple-monitor 1440p wallpaper that’s used verbatim, and it should instead be compressed down to be bandwidth-friendly. I was able to get it to 1.4MB at JPEG quality 80, and when swapping it out in dev tools and performing A/B testing I can’t tell the difference. This should be brought to the attention of a mod on that community so it can stop sucking people’s data for no reason.
I am once again considering to write my own window manager
...unless the setup I am thinking of is already possible, let me construct this in your head:
On the top of the screen, there is narrow status bar, which is split into two parts. On the right side of the bar, you have your clock, your battery, your signal strength and so on.
On the left side, there is a clickable tab for every window you have opened. It's like browser tabs: Every window always uses the entire space below the status bar.
On the far left, there could be an icon which opens a searchable list of applications, kind of like #dmenu but vertical. Everything supports mouse input as you would expect.
Does that exist? Should I make it? It would be awesome for smaller screens, like phones.
Edit: I should add that I'm planning to run it on a Nokia N900 with a single 600 MHz CPU core, 256 MB RAM and a resolution of 800×480 pixels. Existing full desktop environments like Xfce4, LXDE, and so on are way to heavy to run.
Is Lemmy.ml missing from the fediverse explorer?
I was browsing the fediverse explorer and did not find lemmy.ml in the instances list.

Lemmy Needs to Fix Its Community Separation Problem (popcar.bearblog.dev)
I made a blog post on my biggest issue in Lemmy and the proposed solutions for it. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
why does the poster image of c/linux have 3.8mb? (programming.dev)
This is the link to the image. It has 3.8mb. In my opinion that is way too much.
