This seems like something that should be true, but I think I remember seeing a Mythbusters episode where they decided it didn't make a difference. That show was more about entertainment than science, so I wondered if there was a more rigorous study done? I've definitely seen splashes of water(?) come out from flushes so that...

The difference is that instances have self determination. On Reddit all subreddits have to operate under the umbrella of Reddit whether it’s good for them or not. Here communities can go to an instance they’re aligned with. For example there’s a very popular German instance that has all the topics in German for a German audience. In the case of mental health, the ideal situation is thata non profit with expert guidance could create their own instance with communities lead by people who actually know what they’re doing. On Reddit there’s only one sub that can have a name whereas on lemmy you could have a bunch of mental health communities under someinstitute.org or something.
Ohhh man, I’m out of the loop, and I thought I was being helpful earlier, but I wasn’t. What’s the matrix space? It’s not the federation?
Am I getting this right that it’s like self-hosted email, but for chat? Or do we have to pick an instance to host the chat log? How do people normally go about picking? How does matrix space tie into the canvas community on toast ooo?
Surely there’s a Eli5 page or community for this matrix-space? Does matrix space go by any other name?
Thank you for your time! I already love where this is going, but don’t wanna wet my socks just yet and sign up for many things willy nilly in case I lose track :0
I run arch and have never tried pirating games on a Linux distro before. Mostly just movies and music but I’ve run some cracks on my girlfriends windows install so I’m not unfamiliar with it. Would most game cracks run through lutris? Or would I have to download from some place like gog?

I’ve always wondered how many people actually decide to use something like mastodon to see Lemmy posts. I mean I know how inadequate it can be with a lack of a proper UI but I’m just wondering. Especially, with the infinite possibilities this can have.

Yeah the hashtags reach out to really any instance that is atleast related to Mastodon. I’ve seen a few misskey.io ones and a few others i forgot the names to but they both share alot
Biggest problems I see with Lemmy right now is servers going down, defederation for petty reasons, and duplicated communities fracturing a user base. I’ve also noticed users with the same name on different instances but it’s not always clear if that’s the same user or a clone. i basically quit Reddit cold Turkey when I lost use of Apollo and I’d been there since well before the Digg migration. I’m looking forward to seeing how the Lemmy community resolves the issues I noted, no doubt they will.
I think I am on shitjustworks… i don’t know how big my instance is I just chose it because it has a cool name.
It has gone down a few times and at first my reaction was to go to is it down dot com to see if the problem was with my app… but then I had the realization that ohhhh, it’s just my home server is down… I thought about making a separate account on another instance but instead just decided to do something else with those few minutes I would have spent here….
No big deal…. It’s happened a few times in the couple months I’ve been here, but it always works eventually… I really like this platform, and the philosophy behind it, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to understand all the inner workings and how the instances work together, but I don’t feel like I need to.
But I can see how people who understand it even less than I do might get frustrated and so that is going to be a limiting factor with new growth here I would assume…

This instance (lemmy.ml) is one that still federates with lemmygrad, last I noticed. Even then, although the number of unhinged tankies I see here is non-zero, it still isn’t large. (In fact, it’s mainly one particular user that stands out. Y-something, with a name using a bunch of stylized high-unicode characters.)
When I’m on lemmy.world, which I think has defederated from lemmygrad, I pretty much don’t see them at all.
Frankly, I don’t think they’re bothering to try to insert themselves in lemmy.world.

Oh, E-Numbers. Yeah, I know those. They don’t have to be artificial, though some are. Vitamin C is one, for instance. Just because something has a numerical system alongside the normal names (for internationalisation purposes) doesn’t immediately make it scary like many seem to think.

A little history on Reddit. From the politics subreddit with just 85,678 users in 2008 to 500 million active users today. Lemmy/Kbin will follow the same path.
