How did you get lemm.ee to connect to it? I cannot open it on my instance; it just gives me “The server returned this error: couldnt_find_community.” When I try to run a search it just brings up these comments. I think the URL format in the community name is breaking Lemmy, but clearly it worked on your instance so I’m confused.

Blocking over 300 including ALL town/city communities because they are ALWAYS negative BUT Lemmy Connect also lets me filter (hide) on regex for communities and posts. This is invaluable to me- I was going insane trying to keep up with the arms race of cross posts to identical or near identical named communities on endless new instances.
Posts filter:
/elon musk/, /heathcliff without heathcliff/, /neuralink/, /furry/

A startup called PimEyes allows anyone to identify a stranger within seconds with just a photo of the person's face. The technology has alarmed privacy advocates worldwide.
Consider the consequences, says journalist Kashmir Hill, of everyone deciding to use this technology at all times in public places.
“Something happens on the train, you bump into someone, or you’re wearing something embarrassing, somebody could just take your photo, and find out who you are and maybe tweet about you, or call you out by name, or write nasty things about you online,” said Hill
In an interview with NPR, he said the abuse of the tool has been overstated, noting that the site’s detection tools intercepted just a few hundreds instances of people misusing the service for things like stalking
Y’all are angling for a gold medal at the understatement olympics.
There are potential uses of the technology that could be beneficial. For instance, for people who are blind, or for quickly identifying someone whose name you forgot and, as the company highlights, keeping tabs on one’s own images on the web.
He continued: “PimEyes can be used for many legitimate purposes, like to protect yourself from scams,” he said. “Or to figure out if you or a family member has been targeted by identity thieves.”
OH, COME ON
I love how they really have to dig to even come up with some legitimate ways to use the technology.

I find this to be a challenge in general. Amazon and Walmart killed recognizable name brands as quality markers. Walmart forced their suppliers (some of which were name brands) down in quality and prices in order to maintain shelf space, and Amazon is just a haven for rip-off and junk goods.
But the only places you can find quality with good warranty periods in my experience is ultra-high end suppliers in very top line stores. For instance, I’m trying to buy a leather jacket and everywhere I look both online or in person seems like a junk expo…except if you look at very high end stuff (800+ minimum, 1-2k median).
I’ve had similar problems with furniture, and even home goods recently. The only place I’ve had any luck at all is Costco.
PS: I do agree that small town America gets even more screwed because they don’t have the high end stores to speak of.
I understand that clothes that are ethical and of quality cost a lot more, but up to a point. Certain brands raise prices because they can hang a ‘green’ label on it. For instance, as a vegan i bought plastic shoes (not happy with that, obviously) and they were pretty cheap. Then, companies discovered they could call those shoes ‘vegan’ and the price went up, up, up, for those same cheapo shoes.
One of the reasons i learned to sew is that i hope to have slightly more control over the fabrics i choose.
I have a cotton sweater in my closet that is about 30 years old. It still feels very thick and it looks fine. The thing goes in the dryer and everything. Nowadays, cotton is so flimsy, it’s ridiculous. I’ve had clothes that i put in the washer before wearing them for the first time and they came out shredded.
But even cotton - or so i read - is not that environmentally friendly, because it uses a ridiculous amount of water, not to mention that some dyes are probably also terrible. Even wool sometimes undergoes harsh treatments that are not environmentally friendly at all.
I feel like the amount of effort we have to make to choose our clothing is ridiculous and tiring. Yet, with our actions we need to give a signal that we want changes (as a side note, just like i buy pants in the men’s department, because pockets). Actions through what we wear, but also political choices, because so many parties encourage greed in the name of ‘the economy’.
Arrrr my fellow pirates. Since I’m very unexperienced with the seas I ask for you guys, where can I get Minecraft from for Arch Linux. There were some talks to migrating all PolyMC Flatpak installations to Prism Launcher, which was achieved by marking PolyMC as outdated on Flathub’s repo and marking Prism Launcher as the newer version, which will result in Flatpak clients replacing PolyMC with Prism Launcher while moving data over. The only thing users would notice is that the icon and name on the apps list changed, since all worlds and instances would stay in place.
Unfortunately I think they didn’t continue with this decision.

Anything that’s basically one ingredient or one active ingredient. If you’re buying ibuprofen, for instance, there’s zero reason to buy the name brand (Advil) vs the store brand.
Past that, there are some store brands that are actually a big brand. The big brands do that so they can get the bigger margin selling as a name brand, but more volume selling as generic. Costco is and example of that - many Kirkland products are made by major brands.
Madison County Public Library administrators were asked to go over a list of potentially "sexually explicit" books to be moved from the children's and young adult section to the adult section. The majority of these books were about the LGBTQ community. At least one was added to the list because the author's last name is Gay.
If anyone bothered to read the article, the book is not being banned but is simply flagged for removal from the children’s section into the adult section. Obviously a mistake in this instance but there has been a recent rise in sexually explicit books being marketed towards children in the name of activism.

If you drop by my instance ([email protected]) I do some long form posts on some of the stuff I make, with photos. Lemmy is a weird thing to use as a blog, but I’m chronically short on time so whatever :D
…not everything is there though. I have this weird habit sometimes of publishing things under different names, then throwing away the accounts. Truth be told, even I’m not entirely sure what I’ve done over the years. Some ideas belong only to themselves, I guess.
Right now (professionally) I’m trying to pull together some kits for a STEM program – STEM programs are generally worthless marketing fluff here designed to help rich parents show off on Facebook while teaching kids exactly nothing. Also it’s like the cheapest kit from USA or China depending on the affluence of their target audience. A client mentioned that they want to set up a STEM school, so I’m going to pitch them a vertically integrated business so I can optimize for quality at all levels (kit engineering - curricula - marketing). It’s also way cheaper to manufacture good robots locally off my own IP than to buy them across the world :D
Besides that, I’m working on doing audio analysis on the Attiny10. It’s got 32 bytes of RAM, 1k words of program space, and 4 I/O. So that’s being challenging. The screen with graphics works right now, but I wrecked the last chip when I overclocked the ADC that does the audio sampling by too much. Luckily they are like 30 cents each. The final goal is being able to do beat detection so I can make little animated companions with face graphics that sing along with you e.g. at karaoke. I actually hate karaoke, but the idea demands to be born, so I have little choice in the matter. I can always choose not to sell it, I guess :P
New to this, so since my account was created on lemmy.world I’m not seeing them? I definitely see posts from lemmy.ml that everyone is claiming upset about. I haven’t seen anything from hexbear that I know of though which is the other name being thrown around. But others with accounts created on other instances may see them in their feed, they are not necessarily seeking them out to find reasons to be upset. I think that makes sense.
Still appears disproportionately to be people complaining about support as opposed to support itself.
